br22 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 HiOur club has been given an old PC running win 98 so that we can run a scoring program.Software instructions are WinMSS has the following system requirements:Intel Pentium 166 MHz or higher (P2 400 MHz, or better recommended)Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE; Windows NT 4.0 (with service pack 5 or later); Windows ME; Windows2000; Windows XP; or, Windows 2003.64 Mb RAM (128 Mb recommended)32 Mb hard disk space (approximately 7 Mb for WinMSS files without data)VGA or higher resolution monitorMouse or other pointing deviceMicrosoft Data Access Components (MDAC version 2.5 or later, see below)Microsoft Windows Messaging System (optional)WinMSS should run on Windows ME; Windows 2000; Windows XP; and, Windows 2003 problem-free. Ifyou are using Windows 98/98 SE; or, Windows NT 4.0 (with service pack 5 or later), you may need toinstall Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). Installing MDAC is similar to a system upgradeand it cannot be removed once installed (see: Installing MDAC).Important: You must use WinMSS in order to submit Match scores to IPSC Headquarterselectronically. This includes, but is not limited to, the submission of IPSC International ClassificationSystem (ICS) scores.1.2 Installing MDACWinMSS uses Microsoft's Data Access Components (MDAC), to maintain its information. Microsoftdistributes MDAC with Windows 98 SE (Second Edition); Windows ME; Windows 2000; Windows XP;and Windows 2003. If you are running WinMSS on Windows 98; or, Windows NT 4.0, you may need toupdate your operating system and install MDAC.Meeting WinMSS's Minimum MDAC RequirementsThe following steps describe how to ensure that your computer's data access components meetWinMSS's minimum requirements. These steps must be performed in the order in which they arepresented:1) Ensure DCOM (Distributed Common Object Model) is installedMicrosoft Data Access Components require the Distributed Common Object Model, but DCOM may notbe installed if your are using Windows 98. You may download and install Microsoft's DCOM from here:Win98: http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom98/dcom1_3.asp3 WinMSSCopyright © 2002-2011, International Practical Shooting ConfederationWinNT, WinMe, WinXP, Win2000, & Win2K3: DCOM is installed with the operating system.2) Ensure your computer has MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components)Check the WinMSS About window. If your computer does NOT have MDAC (e.g.: Windows 98), installMDAC 2.5 SP3 (Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5, Service Pack 3). This step is absolutelynecessary, because the Microsoft Jet Engine is not included in the downloadable MDAC 2.6 (and later)releases, and WinMSS requires the Microsoft Jet Engine. You can download and install MDAC 2.5 SP3from here:Win98: http://www.microsoft.com/dataWinNT, WinMe, WinXP, Win2000, & Win2K3: Not required.3) Ensure minimum MDAC requirements are met (version 2.61.7326.6 or later)Check the WinMSS About window. It will report the current version of MDAC installed in the computerthat WinMSS is being run on (not the computer that the WinMSS executable is installed on). If yourMDAC version is a lower version than 2.61.7326.6, you need to upgrade that computer with MDAC 2.6SP2 (Refresh). You may download this from here: http://www.microsoft.com/data4) Ensure minimum Microsoft Jet Engine requirements are met (version 4.0.6218.0 or later)Check the WinMSS About window. It also reports the current version of the Microsoft Jet Engineinstalled in the computer that WinMSS is being run on (not the computer that the WinMSS executableis installed on). If you Microsoft Jet Engine version are a lower version than 4.0.6218.0, you need toupgrade that computer with Jet 4.0 Service Pack 7. You may download this from here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/dataaccess.aspNote: Current versions of MDAC for all 32-bit Windows operating systems are available from Microsoft'sUniversal Data Access, Free Downloads, web page: http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm If youencounter unusual database problems, compacting and repairing it or downloading and installing theMicrosoft MDAC 2.7 SP 1 Refresh usually makes them go away.I am kind of lost and hope that maybe there is a service pack I could download that would take care of it.br22
