Task Scheduler does not suspend after completing task

I have the Task Scheduler resume the machine at night to run a batch. It is supposed to suspend S3 again immediately after completing the task, but it doesn't! It stays on indefinitely. Task scheduler log shows that the task completes normally. Windows 2000 always suspends without fail after completing tasks. Why is XP failing to suspend?
