Whats "System Partition" for?

Featured Replies

i am curious, when i install windows 7 when creating a new partition it tells me that it will also create a system partition, i wonder whats it for? i think windows still works without it.

for all I know Windows 7 uses a system partition of some 200 MB or so for its boot files and Win RE. Also this way the system is prepared, if you ever want to use bitlocker, so you aren't forced to move the actual Windows installation partitio. This is because some parts of the system still have to be unencrypted, so you can boot the system.

Even using Windows setup to partition/format the disks can avoid this. You only need the partition if you're on an EFI system, or if you plan on using bitlocker in the future (bitlocker will have to create a partition if the 100MB boot partition doesn't already exist).
