DVD Audio/video effects in GOM Player (etc)

Does anyone here use GOM Player in 98SE? When I play a DVD movie in GOM Player, the video effects (sharpen, etc) and audio effects (graphic equalizer mainly), do not work. Does this have anything to do with codecs or is my 98SE broke or infected somewhere? The movies play fine, but it would be nice to use those effects. I do have ffdshow installed (whatever the last version for 98se) and I am able to use the audio equalizer in there while playing DVD, but it would be nice to use the stuff in GOM! I am able to run movies in VLC also and the equalizer works in there, but the last 98se version of it does not have video "sharpen" (later VLC version do).

Well. I'm using the GOM Player in Windows 98. Unfortunatelly, I do not use DVD, so I have no experiences related to this source.

But, the GOM Player does have a setting restricting video effects to the video resolution. The effects are used only when the resolution is low, that way. Preferences - Video - Video Effect - Condition setting is never set to "Always enable" with default setup. So if you want to get the video effect benefits in a high quality video it is necesary to set "Always enable" there.

I have not tried that in 98SE yet, but I did in XP and it still does not work, for DVD, afaik. I press Ctrl-F1 in GOM to see what codecs are being used and it only shows "Video overlay" for video, but nothing for audio. I cannot even use video brightness, contrast and saturation in the GOM control panel box. The two audio volume sliders do work though, lmao.

I think you should try, so maybe you can see what is going on (unless it will work for you). Yes, all these A/V effects work for individual Mpeg, Avi, etc files, it's just not working in DVD. There's too many config variables involved and the GOM Wizard is too limited. I did discover that if I checkmark the MPEG2 codec , it makes it worse. And if I tweak more things that I don't know about, it freezes and sometimes makes my XP laptop crash & reboot.

Anyway, the perfect DVD software player I've found is the latest version of VLC running inside my XP. Graphic equalizer, video effects work in there. But if I run GOM in the same XP system, none of those effects tweaks work. Sure, the movie is playing, that's it, just can't tweak the A/V. Intervideo WinDVD also works (brightness, hue, etc), but the one in 98SE does not have equalizer or video sharpening. Perhaps it is also the DVD movies I have been using to test it, they are too new (GI Joe:Cobra & Terminator4:Salvation) and may have newer codecs?? I will try with older movies.

Basically all I ask for is a 98SE DVD player that can play DVD with working audio graphic equalizer and video effects, especially "sharpen". I have also tried Media Player Classic, which seems to have "sharpen" and equalizer, but the video effects there are grayed out.

And you can forget about asking in the GOMLab forum, it's a virtual ghost town there.
