What is the last Java SE that works on 98?

The forum sticky topic at http://www.msfn.org/board/last-versions-so...se-t105936.html says the last Java run time environment version was 5 update 22 with a note that 1 6 0 7 actually works. http://www.mdgx.com/add says the same.

Neither reference said anything about Java SE, the development program for producing Java applications.

Inferentially, per Sun, Win 98 Java SE support also stopped with Version 6, cf. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/system-configurations.html (Win 98 included) and http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/inst...igurations.html (Win 98 not included)

Do any of the version 6 Java SE updates work on Win 98?

Note: I tried Java SE 6 update 7. It didn't install.

Note: According to the MDGx note, to install 6 update 7 you have to run the msi file from the temporary directory. I tried that, and all I got was another .msi file in the temp directory. Running the update 7 install normally seemed to work.

I have posted the actual MSI file, so you don't have to go thru all those steps anymore...

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#JAVA

BUG:

Java SE 6.0 (a.k.a. 1.6.0) Update 7 (6u7):

http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/6u7/

Direct download [15.1 MB, right-click to save!]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/JAVA_6U7.MSI

is the LAST Update compatible with Windows 95/98/NT4 SP6a/ME, but you MUST

ignore "Warning: This is not a supported Operating System!" error message!

FIX:

How to install Java SE 6.0 (a.k.a. 1.6.0) Update 7 (6u7) on Windows

95/OSR1/OSR2/98/98 SP1/98 SE/NT4 SP6a/ME:

1. Run .MSI installer [15.1 MB, right-click to save!]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/JAVA_6U7.MSI

2. Or run .EXE installer [15.2 MB]:

http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/6u7/

-> stop at "Welcome to Java" screen -> open Windows Explorer or File Manager

-> browse to %windir%\TEMP [default is C:\WINDOWS\TEMP (Win95/98/ME) or

C:\WINNT\TEMP (WinNT4) = see your C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT or C:\CONFIG.SYS SET TEMP

line(s) for exact location if different than default (Win95/98/ME) or your

TEMP environment variable (WinNT4)] -> run .MSI installer!

MDGx, you way want to read RetroOS's post here:

http://www.msfn.org/board/kernelex-4-0-fin...6-page-240.html

I was able to get the Version 6 Update 16 of Java to work (even before I installed KernelEx).

He basically follows your advice for Update7 and once it's installed Opens Java from the Control Panel and unchecks Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in (requires browser restart), from the Advanced Tab.

It's on that page sorry having trouble with the link.

My apologies! I am, of course, talking about the JRE. You may wish to look at the MDGx.
