Cannot install XP with SATA enabled

I bought a laptop, a celeron under the V6000 series, without preloaded software. I had a hard time installing Win XP SP2... then when I went on to look into the bios, I changed some options including disabling SATA support. After that, there was not problem in installing the OS.

Later, I changed tehh BIOS options to what they were... and when I tried to start... i got a blank blue screen and it was there until i turned the computer off.

In short, the OS loads only when SATA is disabled in the BIOS... May I know the reason and am I loosing anything if I disable the SATA access in BIOS?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Arun Kumar.

You need to provide the SATA drivers for your chipset (motherboard) when installing XP. This can be done with by pressing F6 during text based setup to load from a floppy or by integrating the drivers into the install source.

I used Google to find out that the "v6000" is a Compaq laptop. Then I went to HP Support site, as they own and support Compaq series, and found nForce chipset drivers availible.

http://letmegooglethatforyou.com/?q=v6000

http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_query=v6000

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_15.24.html

Vista includes drivers for most SATA controllers, as does most linux distributions, so your claim that it doesn't run with any OS is greatly exaggerated. I am modifying the title of the post and moving it to the XP forum.

Hi,

I talked to HP Support before coming here. They gave me the URL for chipset, other drivers as well aNVIDIA Ge Force drivers. But while I can install all others, the NVIDIA setup terminates saying it cannot be installed. But the HP rep did not say anything about it.

Still I will try this URL in and get back to you.

BTW, how do i install the drivers in text mode? I mean do I need to provide specific command after booting through DOS boot Disk or do I just type in the name of the executable at the command promt. All my drivers on a local partition though they can be copied to a CD. Booting through DOS diskettte wont give me access to other partitions except C drive.

Also, can a Windows Boot CD make it possible? It yes, how do i get to create a Windows Boot CD? Please provide me the instructions.

Thanks.

GeForce are nVidia Video drivers

nForce are nVidias Chipset drivers

You should run XP Setup normally, press F6 when it prompts you to, and then insert the Floppy with the nForce drivers.

You can create a customized xp boot cd with nLite

http://www.nliteos.com/

These guides mention how to integrate drivers

The drivers are chipset speccific as the one you refered in the above link is terminating the installation quoting incomapitbitlity issues. However, I managed to find the drivers from the "UPDATE Drivers" option in Device manager. I installed them and turned SATA on in the BIOS. But the OS is restarting again and again saying that Xp encounteres a problem. Eventually I had to disable it.

I also looked for SATA drivers for Intel 945GM Express Chipset throughout the HP site but seems they are not available. There was a tutorial though on how to locate the drivers on your laptop and help XP in recognizing it. It required an installation file for SATA drivers for the said chipset.

The tutorial said that to help XP recognize the drivers, we need to run the XP installer again. And where it asks if we want to setup XP or a third party RAID dirver, we will be using a CD that contains the SATA installation Pack. So that would solve the problem for the lucky ones who could find the installer package compatible with their chipsets.

But in my case, where else can I look for the installer pack of SATA for 945GM express chipset? Let me know if anyone has an Idea.

I think that laptop uses an AMD processor and an NVIDIA chipset, so those drivers dont apply.

I mistakenly linked to the wrong nlite forum topic, the correct one is

Integration of NVIDIA's nForce RAID and AHCI drivers, Guide and help for XP and W2k3 (32/64bit)

No, The chipset is Intel 945GM express. So was looking for compatible drivers. I searched the entire HP site. I tried contacting HP chat support again but could not. I will try again late night. Last time, they just kept me waiting.

By the way, the device manager says "COMPAQ SCSI Tape Adaptor" under the "SATA controllers." I tried the update option for a "question mark" in the device manager and used all 5 listed compaq sata drivers. While 4 of could not be installed, this one got installed without any problem. Still when enable SATA in BIOS, it say some error has occured and keeps re-booting. So I had to disable it again.

@majormashup:

Yes, the BIOS has two mode for SATA namely ENABLE and DISABLE.

Do you have and are interested in using the floppy method?

Otherwise you will need to integrate the drivers into the XP setup disc.

Or install Windows Vista or Windows 7...

The topic I linked to above, Integration of Intel's SATA AHCI and RAID drivers, Guide and help for XP and W2k3 (32/64bit), really covers it all.

BTW it seems they did make an Intel version of that notebook.

Actually, the processor is Intel Celeron at 1.6Ghz I guess.. And chipset is Intel 945GM Express chipset. I think I got the clue from your answer. I will try the intel site instead of hanging on to the HP site..

They must have some compatible SATA driver installation packages.

BTW, is there any difference between SATA controllers and SATA drivers. I was able to install controllers using Add Hardware Wizard.. It accepted Compaq Tape something out of the 5 options for SATA controllers.. i guess it mentioned above.

And if I get a combo installation pack of many SATA RAID drivers on any site, how do I recognize the one I need.

Is there no way I can directly install it from my computer instead of that F6 method. The Floppy method wont work because there is no floppy drive in the laptop. So can I use anything else like a pen drive? If no, then I will use the integration method u mentioned here.

Tomorrow and day after is OFF.. so I will return with a permanent answer for this by Monday... Meanwhile you all just relax.

  • 3 weeks later...
DreamSkape did you get your xp install working? I have the same problem on a dell machine with no floppy drive, interested if u can use a flashdisk...??

cheers

No, USB FLASH did not work. I guess the only option is the altered CD of Windows XP. I will try it as soon as I am free. but I cannot understand while Windows XP has so many updates, why could they not create one for SATA like a SP4 especially for SATA.
