Vista troubleshooters: HELP!

Featured Replies

Hello,

Actually I was not interested in windows vista at all, till I've - a week ago - bought my new TOSHIBA labtop with a windows vista home premium included. I've thought for a moment: Let's try it...

I've faced many problems, solved most of them except those two:

- When switching on the chicony built in webcam with MSN messenger, the messenger closes after an error message telling me that it faced a problem and needs to close.

- The second problem is that I can't access any shared folder on the network. typing \\IP_Address as a Run commands gives an error message saying "A device attached to the system is not functioning".

In both cases I've searched the internet looking for a solution, which was a microsoft hotfix in both cases (KB934374 for the forst and KB933664 for the second). Although they are supposed to be included in the SP1 that I already have, I've downloaded them and tried to install each one in vain, with another message telling me that "Hotfix does not apply to your system"!

Sounds like the hotfixes need another hotfix to make them work!

Sounds like I'll move to ubunto or just return to XP pro...

Any help please?

Thanks luke,

I've made sure that the hotfixes are vista x86.

regards

If the Hotfix will not install, with the error message you got, that means it is already on your machine.

You sound like you know what you are doing, so I assume all computers have the same Workgroup name? Vista uses a different default to what XP does. Generally the Vista machine will only allow the Public folders to be seen and shared by others in the workgroup and you first have to turn that on in the Network setup screen.

Failing that, it will be a firewall setting preventing this?

Have you been to the Chicony web site for updated drivers?
