i.of.the.storm Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Hi, I was looking into reinstalling Vista because there are a few weird issues plaguing my system. I've got a Windows Vista Home Premium x64 OEM disk from newegg, pre-SP1. I want to slipstream SP1, all updates afterward, and drivers onto my disk. Probably not going to remove anything because I don't really care about that and really just want a faster setup process. Can I do this? I noticed something in the SP1 slipstreaming sticky about not being able to do anything after slipstreaming SP1, but I wasn't sure what that meant. Thanks for the help.
Kelsenellenelvian Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 (edited) OK lets clear the air up a bit...SP1, yes you can do just fine it just takes s long while. The reason why people haven't been able to use SP1 or updates afterwards is because of the removals... (POST-Installation! not "pre")You will have to do at least a little removal because of the size. There is a 4 gig limit on the image size (Just the actual wim image size) SO what I suggest is pick the version you have the license for and slipstream SP1 in that version. Then click on apply and rebuild only that version. Set that iso image aside on a seperate hard drive or DVD (call that your new "Base" image). Now run vLite again and remove the languages (I see your american) so pick all langs. That will strip out ALOT of space so you can have room to add the hotfixes in. There are a couple of other semi-large things you can remove and still keep updating ability. Also you'll HAVE to work on a 64x base OS to do all of this. If you aren't on a 64x base os install it once without using your key, mix your disk then re-install with your updated disk. Edited December 21, 2008 by Kelsenellenelvian
i.of.the.storm Posted December 21, 2008 Author Posted December 21, 2008 Cool, thanks for the info. So I will definitely have to remove things to slipstream SP1, or just if I want to add the patches afterward too? I don't really want to remove anything unless I have to, but I don't want to spend forever installing patches. Will vLite grab the hotfixes from my computer or do I have to download all the installers from Microsoft? That might be a pain.By base OS, you mean I have to make the image on the 64 bit computer, right? I just remembered thankfully that the DVD writer in this machine is a bit broken, and I don't want to risk burning a bad OS disk with this one so I'm going to have to copy the image to my laptop over LAN and burn it from that most likely. Can I do that?
Kelsenellenelvian Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 (edited) No you won't have to remove anything to slipstream sp1. It's just if you go crazy and add all of the hotfixes.Yes by base os I mean the OS you are working on.As long as you have liek an external drive, 4 gig or bigger thumb-drive or another way to transfer the files then yes you can copy the iso to your laptop and burn it from there...You will need to download the installers from MS. However www.wincert.net has a tool called VUT that willl allow for easy selection of and grabbing of the fixes for you.http://www.wincert.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=4601 Edited December 21, 2008 by Kelsenellenelvian
i.of.the.storm Posted December 21, 2008 Author Posted December 21, 2008 (edited) Oh right, I forgot I had an external hard drive. Cool link, I will be sure to use it.Oh meh, it just occurred to me that if it's burning bad disks, it might be reading incorrectly too. Guess I'll use the laptop to do the initial copy of the Vista disk as well. I should really just get a new DVD drive... Edited December 21, 2008 by i.of.the.storm
