i have managed to move the entire Documents and Settings (and hence user profiles) to a drive letter other than where the system resides (d: instead of c: ) with nlite.

i'm now trying to move the d: partition on an entirely separate device. how do i tell windows to read/write to the new device? i can swap the d: drive with another partition letter but then windows comes up with an error about not being able to find the user profile when you try to log on.

strangely you can log on with a profile that you had before swapping the d:drive (all settings are lost) but new accounts can't even log on. for example: log on with administrator --> create "test" account --> assign d: to another partition/device --> restart. administrator can still log on (no settings or wallpaper) but test can not.

windows must assign the partition/volume a GUID and ignore the drive letter. there must be a way to edit this GUID.
