This issue is driving me crazy trying to figure this one out.

I get sent word files through email, and these files have a named followed by an underline such as: author__________

I'm supposed to type the author's name over the line, but when I do that Word 07 puts blanks spaces in the line along with extending the line.

I can do the same in here by typing: _____john doe______________ You see the spaces added under John Doe along with extending the line.

The only way I can get this to work, and this maybe the only way to do it perhaps, but I highlight the underline, erase it, type the name, highlight the name and underline.

Is there a way to protect or lock the line so when you type on it Word won't put the spaces in or extend the line?

I've searched google on this topic and each one I found mentions using a form or table to do this???

Thanks for any suggestions

Yup, use a form or table. Otherwise, a ___ is a character and will move when you type something.

Or, you can simply draw a line using Word's draw if you don't want to use a form or table. Simple as that.
