Can you make a bootable DVD with an upgrade DVD ?

When I bought my laptop it came with Vista but only with an upgrade DVD - which is not bootable. Thanks Sony

Now I damaged my Vista partition when I tried to changed partitions on the hard drive. Vista boot menu still appear but when I select Vista it complains that /windows/system/bootmenu.exe (from memory so not sure) is corrupted, and that I should reboot with install DVD to repair it - which I cannot do of course because my DVD is not bootable.

I searched the net for a while, came across vLite and tried the SP1 slipstream method but even with the "bootable" checkbox at the end it cannot make a bootable image either (i get the "BOOTCD: cannot find BOOTMGR" error)... I guess my DVD is missing some files needed to make it really bootable.

Is there a way to make a bootable DVD with a non-bootable one ? if not, how can I rescue/repair my Vista installation ??
