XP and W2K

Hi There,

I have a laptop running windows 2000 Professional and a PC running XP Home. I have connected them with a x-over cable and I am able to ping each other (using TCP/IP and with File sharing installed). The problems begin when I try to share both folders. Although the sharing permissions are OK, whenever I try to access a subdirectory from XP into 2000 or viceversa, XP gets freezed (and sometimes even 2000). The funny thing is that sometimes XP get freezed at the 1st level, sometimes at the 2nd or even at the 3rd... .

No firewall is present, neither in XP (box unchecked) nor in win2k pro.

I know that IP's and subnet mask are OK, but I have no idea what it is going on.

I have solved by connecting both computers via Netmeeting and sending files using its built-in feature. It works just perfect, except for the fact that Netmeeting is optimized for Internet and therefore is very slow (300MB in 10 minutes), but at least it works...

I still would like to share folders the usual way,so If anybody has a tip I would appreciate.

Thanks,

Am I getting deja vu here? sure I've seen this post before somewhere....

The freezing is strange... I get it sometimes, so I just wait and it works eventually, but its not normal and windows networking and folder sharing is a real mess.

Best idea would be to use FTP Server software such as BulletProop FTP Server 2.15 (www.bpftpserver.com) and set them active and online on both machines. Then use an FTP Client such as CuteFTP Pro (www.cuteftp.com) to access the other machine by address such as ftp://aaron/ (if the machine was named aaron) Its fast and easy.

(Since I found out about this yesterday, I'm going to implement this in my LAN of 4 PCs next week, since its such a pain sharing folders with all these different users and NTFS file systems.)

If you want to browse files "Windows Explorer" style, then I'm sure WS_FTP Pro is the FTP client you need. (www.ipswitch.com I think)

Let me know how you get on. :)

I was having the same frustrating problem. I finally did this and it worked: uninstall TCP/IP (in 'My Network Places' > properties)on both the server pc and the notebook. Reboot and reinstall. Then make left click on the drive(s) on both pc's to insure that 'sharing' is correctly set.

That should do it...

That was taken from the following site:

Next I suggest you check out this site!!!

Another suggestion:

Install XP on the laptop. Then try your file sharing.

Big Booger

Yeah, you are both right. I originally posted it in "Network freeze", but as most of the people were more concerned about Windows Me that about the problem itself, I created my own thread.

Thanxs for the suggestions, I will try them this weekend.

Hi guys,

I have configured the built-on FTP server on my laptop (it runs w2k pro) and I connect with IE6 (the url is ftp:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and now I browse my laptop explorer-style and it runs like hell!!!. No idea why I still cannot get a reliable connection through the Folders sharing (which it looks more reasonable to me) but I have my problem solved.

Thanxs a lot for the tips !!
