Can no longer bind WinME IPX/SPX to any adapters

Greetings.

Maybe joining/posting here at MSFN

will find the/a solution to this issue.

At this time I can no longer bind IPX/SPX

to any adapters. I can bind/remove/rebind

TCP/IP & other Protocols but not IPX/SPX ... not at all.

Two & half years ago I decided to reformat

the 4gb HDD in the Toshiba & cleanly reinstall WinME.

I have a WinME upgrade CD & the Win98 CD

that came with the Toshiba. At first I had no trouble

binding IPX/SPX after the clean reinstall.

Unfortunately I did not have Drive Image XML

like I do now; otherwise I could have restored

a fully-functioning back up image of the c:\ partition.

Until this IPX/SPX binding problem WinME

on the Toshiba was functioning better then ever.

I have a Toshiba 4005cds with two PCMCIA slots.

WinME shows a separate adapter for the bottom &

the top slot for the WLAN & the Surecom ethernet card.

WinME shows only one adapter for the Netgear

ehternet card whether I use the top or bottom slot.

I cannot now bind IPX/SPX to the WLAN card

top slot but previously did for the WLAN bottom slot.

Because I can use both an ethernet & the WLAN card

when the WLAN card is in the bottom slot,

this gives me operability. Adapters already

with IPX/SPX function fine. I cannot bind IPX/SPX

to the Surecom ethernet card in the bottom slot.

I cannot bind IPX/SPX to my new USB»Ethernet

adapter under WinME but have on my XP laptops.

adapter/cable under WinME but have on my XP laptops.

It seems I cannot use WinME TCP/IP alone

without IPX/SPX for my LAN. I have three laptops.

I started using IPX/SPX for my LAN

(after acquiring my 2nd laptop) because

TCP/IP for LAN conflicted with the TCP/IP

for internet through WLAN. I do not need IPX/SPX

for internet connections. I now use IPX/SPX

for LAN - either ethernet or WLAN.

This is not a new problem for me.

About a year after the WinME reinstall

I could no longer (re)bind IPX/SPX to my three

PCMCIA cards (2 ethernet & 1 WLAN).

Now (as then) after I double click IPX/SPX,

WinME returns me to the ADD/CANCEL popup

without binding IPX/SPX. Somehow, I really

have no idea now how, I did something & was

able to bind IPX/SPX to the PCMCIA cards.

I remember choosing HAVE DISK and trying

different .inf files. That has not worked for me now.

In any case, what is going on here?

More importantly, what can I do to restore

the functionality to WinME to bind IPX/SPX to adapters?

I tried a WinME repair install by running setup

in c:\win\options\install, but that did not restore

the IPX/SPX functionality. I suppose/hope a clean

reinstall would restore IPX/SPX binding functionality,

but I hope to find some other, less destructive solution.

The problem is NOT that IPX/SPX is not available

as an option under Protocols. I tried the Microsoft

fix of extracting/restoring inf files to c:\win\inf to no avail.

Somewhere along the line something has happened.

I don't know what & I don't know what I need to do

(other than maybe another clean WinME reinstall)

to restore IPX/SPX binding functionality.

Any insights appreciated.

Actually, binding IPX/SPX to local network and TCP/IP to internet is a good idea in term of security so you should keep this configuration.

Be sure you installed NETBIOS support for IPX/SPX and unlink NETBIOS from all TCP/IP protocols and devices.

About your problem...

- maybe deleting and reinstalling IPX/SPX? And remember, binding can be done from both card properties and protocol properties.

- maybe before reinstalling Windows, you could try to update to SP2 (if not done yet) and then desinstall / reinstall completely your network devices?

These are only simple suggestions that will only be usefull if you haven't tried them yet. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas right now.

I'm still hoping for the miracle

of successfully resolving this issue.

Being able to once again bind IPX/SPX to adapters

(without having to cleanly reinstall WinME)

would successfully resolve this issue.

I do not even know yet if cleanly reinstalling WinME

would restore this functionality.

I presume it would. It should.

The 4gb HDD that came with the Toshiba

that has WinME is now superfluous

because I now have WinME running

in the Toshiba on the 40gb HDD

that was originally in my ThinkPad with XP.

The ThinkPad now has a 250gb HDD ...

4gb HDD ... 10 years ago that was HUGE ...

My WinME has all MS updates ...

of which there are no more ...

I certainly cannot un/re install

any adapters that now have IPX/SPX ...

not unless I'm ready with a new

image file of the WinME c:\ partition

to reinstall afterwards ...

In any case any insights appreciated.
