marcopolo6668 Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Hi everyone,Over the past day I've read and read but unable to find a way that will work.I have the MSDN version of Vista/XP DVD and I've tried a few methods to get Vista installed via my 8gb USK key, but to no avail. It seems reading that you should be able to format, copy the disk content and then update the boot sector to make this work.I've also tried http://kurtsh.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!...!1665.entryAlso tried a runthrough on here using the HP USB formatter, selecting DOS start folder and Vista_Installation_from_USB but no luck - this wanted the floppy diskThe hardware is USB bootable.Any help appreciated. Thanks

ajua Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 I have myself an 8gb usb stick that i use to install vista. The instructions on the link you posted are right. I use exactly those to format sticks.Have you done this within vista? It is important.About the commands for copying files, you can just select all the files and copy them as you would normally with other files using explorer. It works very well.
steve6375 Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 HiYou must partition the USB drive under Vista or WinPE. It won't work if you partition under XP, even if you use Bootsect afterwards.Having said that, I have written my own utility which WILL allow you to use only XP to partition and install WinPE on a USB stick from scratch :-)HTHSteve
