Chaps,

A while ago I used vLite to trim Home Premium to use in a HTPC. Everything was just fine, or so I thought.

I recently purchased a Synology NAS to store my media files since the HTPC's disks were overloaded. To use it, I have to enable Network Discovery in the Network & Sharing Center.

But the problem is that I get this awful "Class not registered" error and Network Discovery remains off. I am stuck. Searching through the forums revealed two threads here and here.

However, none of those provide a solution and I am stumped. It would pain me to have to reinstall as I have been optimising and customising this HTPC for hours through the past few weeks.

So I'd just like a short and concise pointer for this issue. Am I screwed, or is there hope? :}

Cheers,

Antonius Maximus.

What do you mean you need Network Discovery to access NAS?

That does not sound right, ND is for you to be accessible, all you need to access the NAS is Network Explorer (and TCP/IP netbios helper to make it easier).

Not really. Network Discovery is to see devices on your network -and- be accessible, as per the description in the OS itself :

When Network Discovery is on, this computer can see other network computers and devices and is visible to other network computers.

And that's just it - I can't see the NAS on the network. Sure, I can access it with \\nas\share but the Media Center itself cannot.

Why not map the share to a drive letter and be done with it? Well, I stream some pretty heavy 1080p files through the network, and need all the bandwidth I can use. SMB (mapped drives) is significantly limited in bandwidth compared to the connections used by uPnP, so choppiness can occur easily.

But I digress. I really need to turn on Network Discovery. If there is no way at all, then I will very painfully reinstall the system. That's all I need to know, really. ;)

Cheers,

Antonius Maximus.

That second part about Media Center and upnp is what interested me, I understood at first that you cannot access the shares manually.

Probably reinstall is due, attach your preset to see what was removed in the first place. Btw there was File Sharing compatibility option...next time be sure to use that, it will save all needed components.

edit: btw try this if it is even related, it was a quick search
