foxcrafter Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I have a new HP/Compaq laptop running Vista Home Premium; it came with Office 2007 Home and Student in trial version. I got Office 2007 Enterprise via college student license. It would not install through autoplay - I got error message that a needed file was either corrupt or missing. I will list the steps I have taken since as possible fixes encountered on other forums, etc. Assume a fresh reboot after each step.1. Did un-install of MS Office 2007 using control panel2. Did un-install of MS Office Trial xxx?something Assistant using control panel3. Using Run, found Installers and looked for any relating to Office - found none4. Using Search found neither any folders or files pertaining to the uninstalled products5. Did find one folder remnant pertaining to PowerPoint - deleted thatI have not yet done any of the following: Copied the source DVD to a drive folder and tried install from there - publicly renounced my love for the Cubs, and all other masochistic tendencies - pulled out the trusty Memory Mallet. Please - I know this is commonly reported, but I can never find where someone gave feedback of a good result. Thanks,Foxcrafter or just Jon
HappyAndyK Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 You will need to know the exact error wording or code. Which file was needed ?Meanwhile, run CCleaner, a freeware registry and junk cleaner, reboot and try again.
foxcrafter Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 In italics below is the only error message I get - the title on the message window is Setup Error - there is no error number. Since my original post I have run CC Cleaner as well as the Installer Cleaner recommended above. I rebooted and got the same error. Then I copied the data on the source DVD into a temp folder on my hard drive and executed setup.exe. No joy. Rebooted again - same story. It is ridiculous to go through all this grief and effort. I hated Vista when I first got this laptop for Christmas. Since then I have made a fairly successful effort to try to like it. It has begun to grow on me. Now I can only reflect that this is the only OS that has given me a problem like this one. I would seem to have an ideal platform for this software. . . right now I feel cheated and I don't know where to go from here. Regardless, thanks to both of you for your offered ideas.Setup cannot continue because a required file is either corrupted or not available. Run Setup again from the original source disk or download location.Jon

I would suggest downloading Process monitor from sysinternals on technet and running it while doing the installation. we can see were it failing
foxcrafter Posted March 7, 2008 Author Posted March 7, 2008 Hey - thanks to all you who offered help. The Process Monitor would not download, but I already had Process Explorer from Rossinovich, so I opened it and tried another Install. It failed, so I went to the Process Explorer having no idea what I was doing or looking for. On a hunch I put the cursor on the graph and found the spike where Office tried to install. I found it as it flagged - immediately after InCD flagged !? So I decided to delete the entire Nero Suite, with InCD, because it never worked right with Vista. I then rebooted. With InCD gone Office installed perfectly! So, is InCD the true problem, or was it because it was in a package that doesn't totally work with Vista, therefore InCD in my case may have been corrupted in some way? Folks like you, much brighter in these matters than I am may have an idea. At least, it is something to remember for the next guy who runs into this problem. Again, thanks for all your help. as it put me onto the tool needed to get at the problem. I do admit, however, that my using the monitor successfully is a lot like the blind pig that falls face first into the mud and finds the acorn! Jon
cluberti Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Most of those software packages install drivers which run at the same layer or lower than the device they're attached to (lower and upper filters). If you had CD software/drivers on your box that are incompatible, it's hard to say which caused the problem specifically. However, it really doesn't matter, because ither way you were destined for failure. You could try a newer version of the nero suite and InCD that are Vista compatible and try again, if you so desire.
