How to move the Docs and Settings directory to my logical partition?

Hello to All,

Can you please help?

After a standard Win2000 installation, I had created a logical partition (D) and I what I want to achieve is to move the Documents and Settings directory FROM the © System Partition onto that logical partition.

I came across one articale that explains this using the registry and its for ONE username or for one username at a time...

I want ALL usernames or whatever is in the Docs and Settings to be in my logical partition instead, so when I have to reinstall Windows or Repair, alot my profiles will be intact...

Thank You and Best Regards

This is not possible via a reg change, as this is a per-user setting. You could consider running gpedit.msc and modifying the local policy (I'm not sure a folder redirection policy exists on a W2K machine non-domain joined, as I don't have a machine at hand to check) to redirect the folder, that would affect all users. But the registry hacks are per-user only, as they're stored in HKCU.

Where in Group Policy can I check it??? Please explain.

And Group Policy is just for security and is not for folder redirection.

Using an internet search engine yielded the result.
And Group Policy is just for security and is not for folder redirection.
You need to become a little more familiar with group policy, then, because that statement is absolutely not true - group policy is a methodology for managing users and computers in an active directory environment, everything from folder redirection and profile issues to security and public key policies, user rights, even down to configuring wallpaper.

Hi,

Well, just to let you guys know that I am not on a domain network.

This is just 2000 standalone and since Im running Virtual PC, I am willing to try anything without destroying my original registry settings and system files while getting my hands dirty so to speak.

I want the Documents and Settings directory in my other partititon (D).

Hi,

Almost forgot...

What about in the Indexing Service, what about If I change the path of the Docs and Settings to the D partition under there???

Wil lthat work?

Is there any way to this please?

I know that on my companys PC workstations the docs and settings is on the other partition and everytime I boot it up, a command windows pops up for a split second and has the follwoing info.

D:\ Documents and settings\Username net use g: \\servername\cd_inst

and the window disappears..

Do I have to create a batch file for this too?

I want to accomplish the same procedure as on my companys workstation is to move the entire DOCS and SETTINGS folder onto this partition.
