Tomorrow Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 So what is it exactly?.I know that Vista installs this very fast during the install. Is it needed or can it be deleted or replaced with a newer version?.Also can the install.wim be opened with a third party app to replace files with newer ones?.Im specifically intrested in replacing imageres.dll(C:\\Windows\System32)because it contains visual elements like the startup sound and logonscreen background.I know...lot of questions again
MagicAndre1981 Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 you can replace files inside the Install.wim. Downlaod the WAIK and mount the Install.wim with ImageX, replace the files and unmount the image. For the correct syntax contact the Docs from the WAIK.

MagicAndre1981 Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 GImageX is a bit buggy. I also had this issue. I'm allways using ImageX for this. How do you call ImageX from the Cmd-prpmpt?
Tomorrow Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 GImageX is a bit buggy. I also had this issue. I'm allways using ImageX for this. How do you call ImageX from the Cmd-prpmpt?I may have figured out why my changes were not saved .I used vLite on the same image after modifying it with GimageX.Apparently it was a mistake .So tomorrow i wil try the other way around...First use vLite and then GimageX...then use Virtual PC and see if changes stayed
Tomorrow Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 (edited) The idea that i described in my last post worked.I sucessfully modified install.wim of RTM build 6000 Vista Ultimate. It now has XP logon sound.Custom(and very nice)Vista Ultimate boxart inspired logonscreen background.Latest DirectX files for best compability and performance(Nov.2007 DirectX End-User Runtime). Also better SATA drivers(enchanged performance). The "install this(beta) driver anyway" annoying message during install is down to just 4 popups(previously ~40 popups). Also program files now comes with my own apps too(only click-and run type apps.Apps that require installation must still be installed after vista install). Also WinSAT score was pre-set to 9.9 .So in logon i was greeted with all my hardware having base score of 9.9.Ofcourse there are still problems too.For exaple i replaced def explorer.exe with the latest version(6.0.6001.17128).This was apparently a mistake because i had used Vize on that file.In first logon i was greeted with nasty error saying i was missing some needed .dll files from shell32.dll...this was obviously because Vize was used on that file.Other than that everything worked flawlessly.i created 2 images actually:Build 29(the modified RTM Ultimate build that was rebuilt with vLite to hold only the Vista Ultimate image+changes to Install.wim with (G)ImageX).Second image was build 30(build 29 was used as a base image to this)..that incorporated all drivers, hotfixes, tweaks etc.More pictures(taken in Virtual PC in first logon of build 30): Edited January 16, 2008 by Tomorrow
Tomorrow Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 Fixed the minor problems i had earlier.Few more pics:No sidebar displayed by default.Sidebar still exists but needs to be enabled.I set it to be turned off by default because i hated how it pop-up in first logon and slowed pc down a bit.Now thats some mighty hardware i have eh?
