TomoDaK Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 (edited) Unfortunately I had a horrendous string of luck in life (lost my online poker broll in a matter of like 2 weeks, had $2100 stolen from me) so my hopes of a new computer went down the s***ter, but now I've got a job and am doing some other work as well. How small could I get a vista install and does anyone by chance know how much ram the default setup vs a really stripped set up uses (for example with my nlited xp all I could do was connect to the internet basically, I removed just about everything:p). Thanks guys!. Also never said it, but thanks a lot for your hard work Nuhi. I just might've killed myself having to deal with regular xp, nlited winxp is like heaven on earth Edited December 5, 2007 by TomoDaK
nuhi Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 Auch.Vista will always use all your RAM for caching so it's not easy to say how much memory it uses. One could do likeRealFreeMem = Cached + Free.I have 10MB free, isnt' that hilarious, they should add some new portion "recoverable memory", like how much from cache is possible to restore without dragging basic OS functions. With all removed, and recommended kept (in the compatibilities) you'll notice some serious speedup. I never cared about memory, HDD or RAM, just to reduce the amount of processes and threads running in the background. Of course smaller OS installs faster and easier to maintain so that is like secondary priority. RAM now is cheap, if you don't have 4GB go buy some, I think that 1GB is like $20.
TomoDaK Posted December 6, 2007 Author Posted December 6, 2007 Thanks, I really don't care about the RAM as well was just curious (you really should have enough ram to run a **** operating system and the programs you use and hd space doesn't cost jack today). Very glad a serious speed-up can be had, along side faster installs, higher security, etc. The new comp will def have 4gb, there's a new gskill 2x2gb kit for $135 that can easily hit 1100ish speeds, not the best timings, but this comp is just to hold me off until I can buy a truly good comp. Thanks again for the hards work
nuhi Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Truly good comp? Check the benchmarks all over, tighter memory timings don't help, considering how much they cost. Some to the price of dual core CPUs and for what, 1-2%.It's all just marketing talk, ego and "overclocking potential" which if you want your pc to be silent and enjoyable, can't have. Next Intel CPU will finally have a memory controller onboard, that should help some.
TomoDaK Posted December 7, 2007 Author Posted December 7, 2007 I realize that (esp with intel, bandwidth is all that's important really. Still nice when your ram can pull off the tightest timings at any given speed though), I'm a huge nerd I've been tweaking windows and overclocking since age 6 =p. By truly good I meant a higher end system, for now just getting an x2 4000+, budget ocing mobo, 3850, etc. In a few months I plan on blowing a few grand on a truly sick computer. I'm definitely pumped for the up and coming Intel cpus, about time Intel started using IMCs. Too bad this will only allow Intel to poop on them more after all the problems with Barcelona/Phenom =/
aro Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 (edited) i have an ultra 32 bit version at 640 mb. i didn't really like vista until this. Edited December 12, 2007 by aro
