Removing or Bypassing drivers

Hi everyone! I've been using nLite for quite some time now, and have had a nearly perfect install CD for XP since I discovered this great little app; but of course there's always a problem somewhere. I'm attempting to update my ATi Catalyst drivers from 6.14(slipstreamed) to the newest 7.10, but after restart the system fails to create the 3D Device for Direct3D - I attribute this to there still being left over files from the 6.14 driver being reinstalled on system restart. I have attempted installation through safemode, removed the drivers and associated registry keys both by hand, and using Guru3Ds Driver Sweeper, but for the life of me I can't get XP to stop recreating the 6.14 drivers in \system32\ReinstallBackups001 and 0000. I've looked around the former and on the web, but I can't seem to find any mention of removing, or at least stopping previously slipstreamed drivers from being loaded. I realize I could remake the installation CD with updated drivers, but I'd prefer not to for the time being. Did I overlook some painfully obvious way to stop the old drivers from loading, or even existing?
