cucolinwin Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 We just installed a 750GB HD in the Window Server 2003 SP1. When I go to disk management or my computer I see it as 698GB. Why is this? This is a SATA and I see the same 698GB when I first installed it as dynamic then as basic. I was looking around I did not see a size limitation for 750GB. I saw this article:http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserve...3.mspx?mfr=trueand it points to a 2TB size limitation. Any ideas? Thanks
eyeball Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 thats because in hard disks 1gb is equal to 1000mb not 1024mb, do the maths and you will see that the 750gb is actually only 698gb, yes it sucks but is the way it is
eyeball Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 yeah i know but in hard disks for some annoying reason its 1000bytes = 1kb, and 1000kb = 1mb and so on , im not sure why but if you do 750,000,000,000 / 1024x1024x1024 you will see it equals 698 sadly
cluberti Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Read the fine print on the packaging - the industry has switched to 1GB = 1000MB.
cucolinwin Posted September 18, 2007 Author Posted September 18, 2007 Confusing! so why are we dividing by 1024 if it is 1000? thanks
eyeball Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 because1024b = 1kb1024kb = 1mb1024mb = 1gbif we were talking a 750TB hard disk then you would divide by 1024*1024*1024*1024the further up we go the more times you divide by the actual value that windows interprets and the true value which is 750,000,000,000sorry its a really difficult thing to explain but i hope you can see
cucolinwin Posted September 18, 2007 Author Posted September 18, 2007 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GigabyteI know its difficult to understand & explain. thanks!
eyeball Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 wow thats a good article thanks, it explains much better than i could lol
cucolinwin Posted September 18, 2007 Author Posted September 18, 2007 It is a good article to keep in your bookmarks. My cousin from Dominican Republic recommended it to me. We should have in the forums more tutorials and related info. such as this. Not sure if already exists. thanks guys!
