DNS Question

Recommended Posts

[issue:] Starting about Sunday this past weekend (maybe a little earlier) we have been having some issues with our laptop users who take their laptops home with them. Essentially what is happening is that when they are in the office everything works fine and dandy, but when they are home absolutely nothing resolves.

[Troubleshooting Notes:] IPconfig shows everything working properly. If you add DNS entries to the hosts file, whatever you add will work past that. E-mail will work (POP3) when you add the IP rather than the DNS name. Changing the DNS to static entries such as 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 etc does not help either. Nslookup resolves to our company DNS outside / inside the network -- and that really is the main problem. We checked our servers and there were no changes over the last few days.

[Question:] I am having some DNS problems that can be traced back to the HKLM\..\..\DNSClient Subkey, where it appears to not be allowing write permissions. When someone connects to our network the NameServers are written to that key and when that someone leaves they should be removed/ignored/overwritten? But aren't. This started recently and I don't know what could possibly be causing this. Any ideas?
