Nazosan Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 I just recently put together a decent HTPC system, but practically no funds whatsoever to spend on it, I had to use an old 15GiB harddrive (on the up side of things, I can say that Maxtor is definitely a good brand... That drive must be way over 5 years old now and it still works great.) Due to space being a serious issue and the fact that an old Northwood core 2.4GHz Pentium 4 processor went in there, I decided to slim Windows down about as much as I could get away with.Only I'm realizing now that I have apparently removed large fonts (though I don't rememeber it.) Since even 800x600 isn't super readable on a CRT screen (I have no LCD TVs -- can't afford them -- but it's just as well because outside of the GUI I WANT the interpolation a CRT uses for running some older games and such where the interpolation can make low resolution games actually look pretty nice) and 640x480 keeps reverting to 800x600 when I try to force it (plus still isn't always super readable) I realized that, actually, enabling larger fonts would be a great idea for such a system as even at lower resolutions fonts would be a little more readable. I'm sure I probably did remove them because I have good eyesight an even at 1024x768 on a 15" CRT monitor (and at 1440x1080 on a 19") small fonts present no problem for quite a distance beyond where I normally sit, so normally installing such fonts would seem a complete waste of space for me.Well, I realize some major components can be reinstalled through the Windows component control in the add/remove dialog, but a thing such as font size is a much lower level thing than you'd typically find in such a place so unsurprisingly I found nothing of that nature in that section. Well, I don't mind if I have to manually install them from a command line or something, but it took me a long time to get the HTPC set up where it's somewhat friendly for remote control usage, viewing on a TV (sans the text readability in the normal GUI problem,) and a ton of other things. I really don't want to have to reinstall and redo all of that just for a problem like this, yet the large font solution is just such a perfect solution to the GUI problem...
nuhi Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 There is no big fonts removal.Try setting the DPI in the Desktop Properties to 120.
Nazosan Posted July 2, 2007 Author Posted July 2, 2007 (edited) There is no big fonts removal.Lol, apparently I've managed to find one then. I've only modified my system with nLite though, no other programs beyond that.Try setting the DPI in the Desktop Properties to 120.Great! This did the job exactly as I needed. I totally forgot about that option. Thanks for the suggestion.EDIT: Well, it seems like a great solution, but it seems also that a lot of windows are being resized for a higher resolution with this setting... Many things no longer fit right on my screen now... Is the large font removal thing something that absolutely cannot be related to nLite?EDIT2: BTW, is there a way to add any other components one may have removed? For example, I removed the NTFS converter tool thinking I'd never need it, but now I'm realizing that I really need NTFS on that HTPC only to find that Partition Magic 8 and Acronis Disc Director both fail to even offer the OPTION to convert that partition to NTFS for some unknown reason (they've never failed to give me the option before, so this is really weird.)
