Anyone? Are there some hidden limitations to how many items will sort themselves under one main index heading? Will certain section breaks cause the index entries to sort out individually as well? Anyone?

You need to decide personally whether your document needs protecting or not. This is a global decision. Can you imagine the nightmare in trying to design what you've suggested? A document protected for text but not drawing? It makes sense to you because you want it to behave that way, but take a step back an imagine actually trying to implement that sort of tiered protectivity in a piece of software with over 1500 features. Egad. If you're working from a template, then each time you open it you're working on a copy anyway, so I'm not sure I understand the problem with making changes (unprotecting) when you open it. Are you opening the template in .DOT mode so you're actually changing your master template? If so, be sure you have a backup safely tucked away and edit away.

Open the master document then go to TOOLS > OPTIONS > SECURITY and put in a password to open the master document. Now no one can open/edit the master but can still access the sub documents.

Smaller font? Remove the title page and the blank inside covers. Use a separate print job for those. That might get you close.

Take a look at the excerpt below from my INDEX. All items are marked properly and appearing in the index, but only the items before page 80 are sorting themselves into the SETUP category properly, the rest just appear below in chronological order, TOC style. Pretty useless. None of the other sections display this behavior. Any ideas why or how I can make it stop? Setup Boundaries, 78 Cities, 79 Counties, 79 Cust.
