The MBR on my C: drive (Partition 0) is corrupted. It started after an automatic windows update. I have reinstalled boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com to no avail. I have completed an entire XP, SP1 install, plus all other updates, to no avail. I can boot into Windows using a floppy with boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com on it. All of my file structures were intact so I have copied all of my files to CD's and deleted everything that I can from my C: drive. I am still left with 9gigs of applications that I would really prefer to leave alone. I have tried ALL of the fixes except Fixmbr to no avail. The reason for not using it is the risk of losing the files remaining on the disk. I am using a laptop which has USB1 only, so file transfers to and from another HDD will be a pain. I have downloaded FIXMBR.exe, and have it up and running, however it gives me around 10 options, and I haven't a clue as to which one I should select to fix the MBR without destroying the partition references (and my data). Can anyone guide someone with zero knowledge of the inner workings of the NTFS through the recovery process using FixMBR.exe?? It would be much appreciated. Hoping someone out there knows the answer.
