  1. Here's a progress update. I ran drwatson in safe mode and got the response: display adapter not Windows 95 compatible plug-n-play device. I decided to take out my Nvidia GeForce 4 440 Ti AGP card and set in BIOS to use OnBoard VGA. I followed some procedures on http://www.usbman.com/win98seusbguide.htm about BIOS setup (disabling ACPI, APM, etc.). I formated C: and clean reinstalled Windows 98 SE with the command "E:\setup.exe /p i". It fully installed But still same old hanging during bootup. I boot into Safe-mode and drwatson says same old thing. I even tried installing Unofficial Service Pack 2.1a from http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html But still something about the onboard graphics card. Someone mention they got their Nvidia card working by using Microsoft own drivers instead of Nvidia. I guess my only chance now is to get my Nvidia card working. I set BIOS to use AGP EXPRESS and still same old problem. Yes, the www.ecs.com.tw lies. It states that the sound, network, video drivers supports Windows 9x. Even the drivers have a sub-folder called Win95, Win98. But when I ran them in safe-mode, it says 'your OS is not supported'. Not sure about ATA/IDE configuration, but I remember it being enhanced. I only got one IDE HD and one IDE DVD-ROM drive and no SATA. As for the scitechsoft.com, that's great. However, I installed the drivers in safe-mode, and still my PC won't boot. drwatson still says display adapter not compatible plug-in-play. I guess my best chance is to try to get my nvidia card to work in the AGP EXPRESS port, but still no luck..
  2. Thanks guys for your detailed replies. Yes, the ECS website does provide drivers for all windows series including Windows 98: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Downloads/Pro...=35&LanID=9 I will try the limiting RAM size you have suggested. There were many other issues people have suggested, such as NSIS.vxd file version, etc. But I haven't seen any errors saying this. You mentioned unofficial service pack for Windows 98SE? Where can I get this?
  3. Please see attachment of my bootlog.prv, bootlog.txt, detlog.txt, frunlog.txt netlog.txt & setuplog.txt http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=...t&id=163028
  4. I recently installed Windows 98 SE on a ECS 915G-A (Intel® 915G & ICH6, Socket 775) http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Products/Prod...=93&LanID=9 motherboard, which has built-in graphics card. Though I do have installed a Nvidia GeForce 4 440 Ti AGP. CPU is a Pentium 4 3.0GHz. Mice is USB not PS/2. Windows 98 SE installed fine. It wasn't until the reboot with message "Please wait while Windows perform post-install stuff...." that it hangs. It actually boots into Windows 98 SE in safe-mode alright, but then I don't get sound/cd-rom/network/etc. Does anyone have any idea why it is hanging in normal boot up mode? Is it because of no PS/2 mouse detected? Or something else?
  5. I liked the VBS detect scripts to detect whether .NET is installed and which version. Does anyone know if it's possible to detect whether Microsoft Installer 3.1 (KB893803) or later? Also, does anyone know if it's possible to read file version number of an executable?
  6. I have a DVD with a 4.4GB file. I tried copying it with Windows Explorer and it says "Not enough disk space to copy". There is 15GB free space on my hard disk. So I use Cygwin (www.cygwin.com) to try to copy it onto my hard disk. It starts and keeps on going. Then it says "No space left on device". However it did copy 4GB across. Is it possible to copy a file bigger than 4GB?
  7. I am wondering if someone can suggest to me a good network monitor program that can run on a Windows 2000 Server and log the external internet usage for each internal PC. We have one server connected to the internet, and all internal PCs go through the server. It would be good to know which PC is using the most out of the internet, as well as what he/she is doing... (maybe). I have googled and there are so many programs but a lot of them are for unix. A free program for Windows would help. Any ideas?
  8. I like to record TV shows/dramas (eg. Lost, Invasion) using my digital terrestrial box connected to my laptop. It contains a schedule timer to start recording at specified times (9pm, etc.). However, sometimes I have to leave my PC switched on in the morning (at 8am) before I go to work... when I don't make it home in time after work.. or I may go out after work, etc. Is there any way to make a PC/laptop switch itself on at a specific time, so that the windows scheduler can perform it's tasks?
  9. I wasn't sure where to post this since it's not 100% programming related. I need advice on installers to give to my company clients so that it installs: - .NET 2.0 Framework Run-time (22MB) - installs some ASP.NET files into specified web/IIS folder - ensure/set aspnet_wp user account full access on specified web/IIS folder What installer can do this? Are they free programs, and where to get from?
  10. Not sure where to post and ask for help about this. Basically I am interested in encrypting files into an archive. Be it images, documents, audio, video, etc. any files. I also want very good encryption, and the filenames encrypted too. Then I want a browser to be able to thumbnail/preview the encrypted archive. I have found 3 Encrypted Image Archive Previwers: Ana's Archiver http://myplanetsoft.com/products/a2r/index.php A2R BROWSER PREVIEW Image Vault http://www.cybermatrix.com/ OWN DATABASE BROWSER PREVIEW ZipWave http://www.world-of-newave.com/zipwave/hel...resentation.htm http://www.snapfiles.com/get/zipwave.html NORMAL ZIP BROWSER PREVIEW Ana's Archiver uses proprietary A2R file format and is totally buggy. However it does archive and encrypts filenames (I think). Image Vault uses a SQL database (I think). Upon entering my password I immediately got a SQL error. Looks buggy. ZipWave can open "normal" passworded zip files (made by WinRAR, WinZIP, etc) and thumbnail/preview them. However I understand ZIP doesn't do encryption. So all filenames are still visible. So am wondering, is there such a reliable stable program that can preview an encrypted image/file archive? What about previewing RAR files since RAR does good total encryption.
  11. I own a Toshiba laptop and it comes with a Recovery CD but no Windows XP CD. The Windows XP is pre-installed into the Recovery CD and the Recovery CD just makes a harddisk copy from CD to harddisk. What I would like to do is recreate the Windows XP CD using the I386, ValueAdd, etc. folders that comes from the Recovery CD (which is also on the harddisk. I have an old Windows XP CD and using the setup.exe file & boot image from that. I burned a CD using the OEM I386 from the hard disk. When I tried booting up from it it requests to insert "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" into drive A:\. Does anyone know whether this means it's wanting manufacter drivers to continue installation, or it is wanting the Windows XP I386 folder but can't find it? How does one change this to make it look for the I386 folder in the CD-ROM path?
