  1. i like windows XP pro the best. its fast, efficient, and stable. i know its not small by any means, but with nlite, its great.

windows vista ran on my computer, but thats about it. my network card didnt work, and my sound didnt work. so i didnt play around with it much. i just went back to XP.

currently, my brother is using windows server 2003 and its a good OS for him. he plays a lot of games and with the newer kernel, it runs good for him. he says hes noticed a speed difference.

  2. i kinda had the same problem, my friend had a dead laptop, so he gave me the thing to look at, and there was an XP home cd in the drive. i asked if i could have it, he said sure, take it. and later i wanted to install it, but i realized the copy of the XP didnt have the code, so i asked if he could find it, no such luck. oh well, i just wont be able to use the cd. just glad i didnt have to pay for it :P

  3. it could be a simple thing like a setting in your bios. i know with the inspiron 7000 laptop, XP wont install when you have the video out mode set to anything other than LCD only. its weird, but it does kind of the same thing. it just fails.

look around in your bios, maybe set the bios defaults. you might get somewhere, you never know.

also, it could be a bad ram module. search for a ram testing program, such as this and you might get somewhere with that. iv personally never had a bad ram module, just ones that are incompatable and the computer just wont boot, but you never know.

anyway, hopefully you can get the computer working with XP, XP is much better for a computer of that speed. also, if you can, try windows 2000 pro, post back if you need any more help, or if you get somewhere with it. :)

  4. iv got a bunch of hdd's, both laptop and desktop. my desktop is a western digital 80gb and its about 3 years old, then i have a maxtor 40gb and its the same age. but then i have 2 fugitsu 40gb's for laptops, (one has a major error in the MBR and it only reads, can be used in a laptop for a main drive) then i have a 20gb fujitsu and its about 5 years old, then i have a toshiba 4gb and that came with my compaq laptop and the laptop is 9 years old. i have a bunch of other drives, but i dont use them all.

id have to suggest getting a maxtor or western digital, we have 3 maxtors here at my house and they all have been working flawlessly for 3+ years.

too many hard drives for me imo

  5. I found the solution!

I used Easy SFV Creator 2.7 to compare a VLK and OEM of Windows XP Pro and I found that the following files are different (not including the files in the $OEM$ folder):

    "I386\DPCDLL.DL_"
    "I386\EULA.TXT"
    "I386\OEMBIOS.BI_"
    "I386\OEMBIOS.CA_"
    "I386\OEMBIOS.DA_"
    "I386\OEMBIOS.SI_"
    "I386\PIDGEN.DLL"
    "I386\SETUPP.INI"

kool, glad you got it working, good job :)

  6. i think this is possible, i have seen it done. just as long as both XP copies are identical, both either pro or home, they will work. however, if one is pro and the other is pro corporate, it wont. ill look for the post that i saw it in where you can change the files over.

found it, http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=74943 that post contains the files you need to copy from one disc to the other. how ever, there might be other things your going to need.

  7. Guess what everyone Hyipo (me) is another victim of StuPid Micro$$oft ripoffs.

What happened is I have a COMPAQ Presario S4020WM and guess what It had a genuine copy. Guess what happened I got a genuine Error from Microsoft. I called them and told them I had a genuine copy on a COMPAQ computer, also that I got a genuine error and they gave me bad information and then hang up. I will not buy another copy cause I already own one. I will not pay twice for the same thing I already owned. Stupid Microsoft.

I bet in 30 days they will shut down my COMPAQ. I hate Monopolies. I say we petition against WGA.

If I didn't know any better I would think that the reason theres WGA is to keep old copies of XP from being legal and genuine so we have to keep buying copies of Windows XP each 1, 2, or 3 years. That's evil. What about the poor people.

Just like the old saying "The rich is getting richer, and the poor is getting poorer."

and the people in the middle get screwed either way.

i know what you mean though, and its not right. a code should stay legal as long as it doesnt start spreading all over the plac, they need to monitor it better.

  8. i have an idea, i doubt itll work, but its worth a shot. take everything you can out of the computer including the cmos battery, a computer will boot without the cmos battery. if it doesnt boot , leave it for a while. let it all disharge so to speak. then see what happens. its worth a shot, it wont waste anything but time.

ps: hope you can get it working, thats a nice laptop. :)

  9. first post updated extensively  so many, i counted well over 70 different versions the first time, then i wanted to double check (i had 78) but then people around me wouldn't be quiet so i kept losing count. after the 10th time, i just said meh, theres over 70 versions. lol. anyway, thats quite the resources.

thanks for all the replies :D

  10. i have installed 2000 advanced server, and im trying to get it hosted on the laptop. but dang this is proving to be harder than i remember. i had windows server 2003 working fine in less than 20 minutes and this one has taken a lot longer >.<

any tutorials on how to set up a webserver with 2000 advanced server?

    edit:

WOO HOO! i got it :D i just had to forward port 80 to my laptop and that did it.

now i just have to set up all the power options on the laptop to only shut down uneccessary things, then itll be perfect. thank you guys all for the help. thank you very much.

heres the site, see if it works for you.
