  1. This is exactly what I needed!! Thank you! How would one include an instance of internet explorer with a particular page displayed (ie. my google calendar?) Thanks so much for the quick response! I'm testing the batch file periodically during the day. I will post my final custom batch file once I've completed it. Perhaps others can take advantage of this time saver. Does anyone think there's a better way to go about this than a simple batch file? This will work perfectly for me, however, I'm wondering what others have done when they needed a solution like this? Thanks for the read.
  2. How do I embed SATA drivers into a customized install disc of windows xp? Microsoft doesn't want you doing this; I've opened a call with them and confirmed this. What third party apps can do this for me and which is quickest? Thanks for your help; I cannot locate this info in a timely fashion, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  3. I need to configure windows xp sp2 to run a batch file automatically after logging in when in the docked state, and not in the undocked state. This batch file would run the following apps in order so that all desktop apps needed in the workday open automatically. Outlook (along with preferred order of outlook windows) Onenote Yahoo instant messenger Webex homepage (for daily reviw of meetings) Strike homepage (for weekly review of workflows) Documentation drive Siebel parts ordering site? Task manager, minimized to tray x amount of other minimal progs I would think I need to consider embedding timeouts between each app starting up so that they open in the order I prefer. What I'm looking for is the syntax this batch file would take; I've not written many so I imagine this is quite simple. Can someone provide me with some direction? The whole idea is to be able to dock my laptop at my desk, boot up, log in. I then go to get mail/coffee etc. Once I arrive back my apps are loaded and waiting on me. I know this sounds corny, but, I'm all about gtd and this would allow me to dive deeper into work quicker in the mornings. Certainly someone else has considered this. Any feedback would be phenominal. Thanks!!!
  4. Hello Xellos, I am in the same boat as you' I many different images for laptop we are using in the field and I am just now getting to look at what options I have available to create a master image and update it as necessary in the future. What seems to be the path of least resistence is to take the newest image I created for the newest laptop we have in our field and work backwards; updating this image with the appropriate drivers for the next-to-most-current laptop we have and so on. What I do not want happening is ending up with a folder C:\Drivers on every laptop with every single driver for all the different models. I want RIS to actively grab (copy) the appropriate drivers during setup and leave the rest on the RIS server, wherever I should be putting them. Any assistance on this matter would be splendid; It will make for a great start to 2007!
  5. I've sifted through several pages in the forums and haven't been able to find any posts related to my question, so here's one for you: I have 10-15 images I've created using Remote Installation Services in a Windows 2003 Server environment, each for a different laptop. I'm tired of all this space being eaten up. I would like to configure one master image which will be compatible with all the different laptops that my group works with. In order to do so, I would need a central location on the RIS server which stores all the appropriate drivers for all the systems. The way I would prefer it to work (if possible) is to have RIS recognize the appropriate drivers for a machine being RIS'd and load them accordingly during the installation. I don't want to mess with any drivers post installation : ) What I do not want is a folder copied to the root folder which contains all the drivers for all the systems. Can someone provide some suggestions as to how I can pull this off? Please let me know if you require any additional information--I am quick to respond. Thanks for a great forum and have a great 2007.
  6. Does anyone have a good solution to capturing screen shots of RIS without having to use a digital camera? All of the pictures I've taken look horrible. Any suggestions would be great.
  7. Is there any problems or disadvantages of storing ALL your filed emails in subfolders below the Inbox folder in an exchange 2003/XPSP2 office 2003 environment? I've never done this; I've always placed all my folder in the same heirarchy as the Inbox folder. Often times I notice many users place absolutely everything they file into subfolders below the Inbox folder. Aside from that question, the max size for an exchange mailbox in a 2003 environment is 2GB, correct? Appreciate any opinions/comments
  8. Is there anyone who has seen this error and/or has a fix?
  9. Here's a question I've had for some time. Hopefully someone can clarify. When I purchase a new laptop I want to wax the load that comes on it and load an image via RIS. Now, am I going to be better off wiping this new laptop with 1's and 0's before loading an image or am I OK booting to the LAN and simply throwing an image over top of whatever comes preloaded? Am I going to get better system stability by wiping what's factory loaded and then loading from scratch or is there no difference, meaning loading straight over the factory OS won't make a difference in terms of my OS stability. Thanks in advance.
  10. I see the following message once in a while The form you selected could not be displayed. An error occurred registering the form in the OLE Registry. I've found the following KB article and followed the instructions with no success. It basically tells me to delete (or in this case, rename) the forms cache. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;320835 The only successful work around seems to be to reinstall office. This happens more often (or maybe even only) in MS Outlook 2002. Does anyone have a handle on this issue? Thanks in advance.
  11. I don't think it can without additional third party software, right? Title edited -- Please, use [TAGS] in your topic's title. Please follow XP Forum Rules from now on. --Sonic
  12. Cluberti, The perms for the image folders not being seen have the same perms as the disc images. The image is not listed in AD. It shouldn't be, should it?
  13. I recently acquired some new laptops and decided to make an image of the factory load. I boot the laptop, navigate to the riprep tool on the network and run. It takes the riprep tool 6 or 7 hours to complete. Once it's complete it reboots. I F12 into network boot to the Client Installation Wizard and get to the list of OS's to pick from and it's not listed there. Basically, the customized hard disk images we've created aren't showing up in the OS chooser screen, only straight-from-disc images are listed. Prior to beginning the image creation, the riprep tool notified me that some of the services would need to be stopped, which I stopped (that's normal, right?). It then said that many process running would need to be stopped as well, which I ended. The only prompt I recieved while the image was being created was a sharing violation on one file. I retried the copy of the file and it went on it's way. The riprep tool gave me notification that is completed successfully. Just not sure why these images aren'y showing up in the Client Installation Wizard. Can some throw some thoughts out? Thanks in advance.

  15. Thanks guys, The user was able to load a ghost image that was quite out dated, which gave him some stability, however, the old image was made when prior to a domain migration so he wasn't able to connect to many resources on our network. He will be shipping his laptop to me and I will reload it and configure appropriately. Again, thanks for the suggestions!
  16. Cluberti, It was the Telephony service which was preventing the VPN connection. Once the user enabled that service (probably rebooted, too) the option became available. He will test the VPN connection this evening. He did say that he had upgraded to XP SP2 about 4 months ago (never brought up that fact that he wasn't able to connect anymore or that his connections had vanished!), though, I'm thinking he may have had a XP Home edition loaded for whatever reason and decided to upgrade to XP Pro SP2 since Home edition does not support VPN connections. Who knows. Cluberti, thanks for the suggestions--enabling the Telephony service resolved the issue.
  17. Cluberti, Can you go into detail what this reg value specifies? LocalSystem is the value on my system, however, I'm hesitant to make any changes to the user's system without some clarification on what I'm changing and an idea of what the repercussions may be. I've not been able to reach this user as of yet, so, I'm unaware if his value in the registry is set to LocalSystem or not. Thanks for the info, your responses are appreciated! Must4ng, That article assumes you have a VPN connection created and that the connection is successful. My user is unable to create a VPN connection using the Create a New Connection Wizard. Other thoughts/suggestions?
  18. I've disabled Windows Firewall and the buttons are still greyed out. Re-enabled the Firewall to no avail.
  19. I've got a user who has upgraded to Windows XP SP2. After the upgrade all of his VPN connections located in the Network Connections windows disappeared. When trying to create a new connection he get through the welcome screen on the wizard and clicks Connect to the network at my workplace. The next screen, which specifies how to connect (Dial Up or VPN) has both the radio buttons greyed out. Unfortunately he works remotely so I have no access to his system. I don't see what is preventing the user from creating the connection. Perhaps something in the TCP/IP connection has gone awry? Re-install TCP\IP? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. 20. I have a user with a Dell laptop (not sure of the exact model) who recently received the following error message: Windows 2000 could not start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as : Loader error 3. Please contact your support person to report this problem. Prior to booting the laptop and getting that message he received the message upon boot up that his system time was incorrect and to press (F?) to reset or (F?) to continue. He proceeded to boot into windows and corrected the system time. Again, after that change he rebooted and received the error message above. I can't find anything in the MS Knowledge Base pertaining to "Load error 3". I feel a bit better following a KB article opposed to someone's post I find googling, but, no luck on the MS KB. I have googled "Load error 3" which gave me some ideas. I am going to have him replace NTLDR first, though, some of the posts claim that did not resolve the problem and to go as far as using FIXBOOT from the recovery console. Outside of those suggestions I would think the registry has become corrupt. Does anyone have any recommendations or tools that can quickly resolve a corrupt registry? Any thoughts would be great. Thanks in advance.
  21. Hey everyone, Thought I'd drop a line and say hello. I am mainly using this forum for info on Microsoft's OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK). I work in an IT environment and I am required to study and pass exam 74-134 - Pre-installing Microsoft products and Technologies. Currently we are in the process of testing RIS with Server 2003. Prior to this technology we were using simple ghost images which were becoming out of date quickly, becoming a burden on pushing new systems to users. We're looking for a more efficient way to manage and update images when needed and most importantly cut down on the amount of time it takes configuring and installing Windows XP SP2 OS loads. I am hoping to gain some insight in integrating MS's Preinstallation Kit and Windows PE with RIS, basically using RIS to push out images created with Setup Manager. This forum seems like a good place to be, though, I haven't been very successful finding any posts related to OPK. If anyone has and resources on studying for exam 74-134 I'd be very appreciative! I haven't been able to find any books solely on OPK, and, I think most of my studying will revolve around memorization and recalling. This doesn't appear to be a very difficult exam, though, I only have 5 weeks to prepare. Thanks! System Builder
