yes! i the mean time, I have figured it out. There is another setting that is also very helpful. Under TOOLS, OPTIONS, EDIT, uncheck KEEP TRACK OF FORMATTING. Thanks for your reply!

Ok-I know Word 2003 is just trying to be helpful, but man! Stop! Everytime I apply an attribute to characters with an applied style Word automatically makes a new style. It is cluttering up my style sheets! Any thing I am missing here? Can I make it stop!?
