Hi experts, I've lurked for a while and tried to find this out on my own, to no avail. I'm working on a template for user documentation of a technology product, and I've been asked to closely mimic an established .pdf manual out there. One of the design features of the .pdf is that the TOC entries are numbered--not page #s though it has those too, course,--but outline numbers. The highest TOC level (chapter) has outline numbering, like: 1) Chapter 1 ------------------ 1 sub...................................3 sub...................................5 2) Chapter 2..........................7 sub...................................9 sub...................................11 (edit: formatting is not coming out exactly as I entered it, as is to be expected....) Now, it is easy enough to add the outline numbring after the fact, using format>bullets and numbering>outline numbered and applying it to completed TOC, but because this is a template, I would love to have it work dynamically, so that outline numbering is applid everytime the TOC is updated with new chapter headings. I've found that if I apply standard outline numbering to the TOC, the outline numbers disappear everytime the TOC is updated with f9. I guess what I'm looking for is an automatic numbering parameter within the Tables and Indexes section, but none exists, AFAIK. BTW, I'm using Word 2000. TIA for any tips or workarounds!
