  1. Replacing those files did do the trick. While I agree that not having a shutdown screen should be no big deal, I was very attached to my old, customized one and I'm glad to see it back. Actually, this wasn't the only issue I was hoping to fix. There were several glitches, such as the one I posted here (monitor won't shut off), which also seems to have been solved by this fix. Thanks again.
  2. I'm pretty mystified now. I did reinstall Gape's Win98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2). As it asked me if I wanted to keep newer files than it was installing, I didn't see user.exe or user32.dll so I answered yes to all and wound up with the same version of those files: 4.90.3001. Then I installed the Microsoft update after downloading it from the direct download link and still wound up with 4.90.3001. What I am I doing wrong? edit: I found the versions of the files I was looking for in my W98seold folder, where they had been placed by SP2 before I installed Win98SE2ME, and simply copied them over from DOS. That seems to have fixed not only this problem, but also the one I described in this thread (no shutdown screen). I would like say something about the adventures I had trying to install the update from MS. The download of the 469 KK file said it was "complete" after about 280 KBs, then installation was aborted with an error message. After repeating the download and trying a couple times, I tried another Googled link. I still got the smaller download but the installation seemed to work. The fact that the relevant files weren't updated makes me think that maybe they've been removed from the package. Perhaps it's strange that I was having the problems with power management since I don't have a laptop or notebook. My motherboard is an Asus SP97v, which, according to what I've read, was the hottest selling motherboard around in the early part of 1998. There's nothing proprietary about it, unless it's the bios update that I did designed to enhance support for the AMD K62 Plus 500 cpu (which I'll actually install if I'm ever lucky enough to find one). I would like to ask one more question: Is changing those files likely to have any overall effect on the performance of Win98SE2ME?
  3. That looks like a very simple and safe solution to try, and I will. Thanks. Sorry that I seem to have posted in the wrong place again, as I have in the past. I could have sworn I had it right this time. I've bookmarked your link for future reference.
  4. Thanks for the info, but will that have any other (undesirable) effects system wide? edit: I see that one of the recommended fixes for problems with those files is to reinstall Gape's Win98 SP2. I'll just go ahead and try that and let you know how it went.
  5. Yes. It worked fine until I installed Win98SE2ME.
  6. Thanks. Unfortunately, after I did that, I realized that I had been in the proper forum originally, after all, and reposted in the wrong one, so I had to do it all over again. Sorry about the merry-go-round ride.
  7. On all 3 of the computers on which I've installed Win98SE2ME, I get no shutdown screen at all, neither my old customized logow.sys nor the Win98SE2ME version. I get only a black screen with a flashing cursor. In my Windows folder, I see logow.sys, which is the Win98SE2ME screen, and logow.w98, which is my original. Can anybody tell me how to get either of those to actually work?
  8. From Control Panel>Power Options, I have my monitor set to shut off after 15 minutes of inactivity but since installing Win98SE2ME, it doesn't shut off at all. Is there any cure for that?
  9. OK. I've already edited my posts by simply erasing the text and replacing it with "delete", but I'll remember that for the future (hopefully, I won't need to do it again). Thanks. edit: I went ahead and followed your procedure, too, just to make it easier on everyone. Thanks again.
  10. Thanks. I guess I'll just go ahead and do that.
  11. Today, I inadvertently posted 2 new topics in the wrong forum. When I realized it, I wanted to delete them so that I could repost in the right place, but I could find no way to do so. Now, I don't what to do--whether to go ahead and repost (double-post!)or just sit and sweat it out until somebody gives me hell for using the wrong forum. I guess that's probably what I'll do. Is there no way to delete a post?
  12. Ok, here's my report: I reinstalled Windows with just the service pack installed and saw no outward signs of trouble. Then I tried it again with Win98SE2ME also installed. Again, there were no signs of trouble during setup, but obvious changes made. All I had to do was open Notepad to see that the default program had been restored. The obvious fix would be to reinstall Win98SE2Me without backing up again but since I couldn't see any reason why that wouldn't work, I didn't take the time to try it. Since I had originally checked the option to install the Notepad that comes with SP2, I should have checked that after the first reinstallation of Windows, but neglected to. I assume that Windows restored several of its defaults in relation to that program, also. At any rate, no real issues were created by reinstalling Windows and I'm sure that simply reinstalling both programs would fix everything. While I was at it, I tried restoring my original Windows and uninstalling both Win98SE2ME and SP2.1a and that went without a hitch. All in all, I guess I've answered my own question and I feel confident in installing both of those programs for real on my current hard drive.
  13. Graz, I just today copied my platform to a larger hard drive. I'd like to run it for a few days to make sure it's working properly, then I can install the service pack and WIN98SE2ME on my old drive and try reinstalling Windows. If your problem can wait that long, I'll post the results here. Edit: I see that you have the service pack but you make no mention of Win98SE2ME. I'll try first with just the service pack and then repeat it with 98SE2ME. That would probably be better for the sake of a more comprehensive test.
  14. Thank you very much. I'm sorry that I posted in the wrong place. I'm still a little confused about the structure of the forum.
  15. My WinME cabs are contained on 3 separate disks for Gateway OEM setup. Since I don't know exactly which I need, I tried copying all the cab files from all 3 to my hard drive, but I can't do it without overwriting. If I put the disk that seems the most likely to contain relevant files in my CDROM drive, will Win98SE2ME setup ask for other disks as needed? By the same token, if I copy the files to subfolders in a main folder on my hard drive, will it ask to be directed to another folder?
  16. Before installing Win98SE Sp2.1a and Win98SE2ME, I would like to ask what's going to happen if I ever need to do a reinstallation of Windows in order to repair it. Will I be able to do it by my usual method of booting to DOS and simply installing from the folder on my hard drive containing the Win98SE setup files, or will I need to take special steps before or after the installation in order to deal with the changes made by the upgrades?
