  1. shame.. this is really annoying; passwords are floating in the air with wifi and ms is still pushing us to use third party software for such fundamental tasks.. we even hesitate to use ie+oe since "protected storage" is revealed out with a 25kb app.
  2. Hi, I couldn't learn from microsoft wether windows explorer supports secure ftp connections or not.. a regular client can connect to a secure ftp site but explorer can not.. do you have any ideas? thanks
  3. Hi, we are using a network file server (xp sp2) to store shared data in a lan. Normally when a user tries to open a file over network which is currently in use by another user he is warned that the file is currently in use and can only be accessable read-only. But when the first user hibernates his computer keeping the file and the pertinent application open, the file slips out from its read-only state and anyone can modify it without any warning. And when the users comes back from hibernation the file becomes un-saveble for both him and the other users. Thus everybody using the file needs to exit their applications resulting in loss of work done. I'm searching for a way to keep once opened files to stay read-only even if the accessing computer goes hibernate. I would be glad if you share your experiences to resolve such an issue, I beilive that central data management is widely used and I wonder if its possible to use hibernation rather than powering off while still holding the files rights intact... thanks
  4. Hi, recently I have found a small application named protected storage passview that can retrieve passwords from protected storage of windows xp. now I'm concerned about this security issue which anyone can view your passwords used for oe and iexplorer... is there a possible way to encrypt this place and restrict access of 3rd party applications? thanks Title Edited - Please follow new forum rules from now on -- Martin L
  5. I'm using Avg antivirus free ed. but as I said I'm ending all non-system processes before testing, anyway the explorer keeps up spinning the hdd. Filemon doesn't show any application other than explorer, how can I track such an embedded driver or else?
  6. Hi, you can find the sysinternals filemon output below; this hdd event occurs every minute with high disk activity. its recorded while there were no other programs running, indexing, shadow copy and system restore sevices were disabled. I have checked another computer with sp2 and this acitivity wasn't that often. this is happening on a clean fresh setup not connected to internet and virus free. what may cause explorer to do such heavy activity regardless of system being busy or idle. I'll appreciate any ideas, thanks 17:16:07 explorer.exe:1840 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Options: Open Directory Access: All 17:16:07 explorer.exe:1840 IRP_MJ_QUERY_VOLUME_INFORMATION C:\ SUCCESS FileFsFullSizeInformation 17:16:07 explorer.exe:1840 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 17:16:07 explorer.exe:1840 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 17:16:07 explorer.exe:1840 IRP_MJ_CREATE D:\ SUCCESS Options: Open Directory Access: All 17:16:07 explorer.exe:1840 IRP_MJ_QUERY_VOLUME_INFORMATION D:\ SUCCESS FileFsFullSizeInformation 17:16:07 explorer.exe:1840 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP D:\ SUCCESS 17:16:07 explorer.exe:1840 IRP_MJ_CLOSE D:\ SUCCESS
  7. Hi there, I've been using a custom frontpage in outlookexpress inorder to speed up some recipient and subject entries. Thats a html page containing mailto: links which you may also define in registry following: HKCU\Identities\{...}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\ and creating a string called FrontPagePath which will point to your custom page. Anyway after installing sp2 this functionality of OE is not working anymore. The page is shown correctlly but the links do not work any more... How can we work around this ? thanks
  8. Hi, I wanted to share the result of the above mentioned issue; impressive success ! After the setup of windows xp, os automatically recognized the previous configuration of the harddrives without any re-justification or intervention. This points out the fact that the dynamic drive knowladge is embeded with the ntfs and lasts with the filesystem. thanks for the comments.
  9. you didn't mentioned but I assume that you have your partion formatted properly, this doesn't sound like a sata driver problem.. Usually if the drive is sata and if you don't load the appropriate drives with F6 windows will be installed but do not work. You may find the sata driver from your manufacturers page (harddrive or mobo) copy the driver files to a floppy (find a floppy!!) and press F6 when it asks for..
  10. Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place but here it is: We are now using windows server 2003 on a server on which two scsi harddrives are setup to be as one ( d: + e: = d: by the help of native windows disc management). We are planning to format the system and install windows xp and wondering if winxp will work flowlessly with these united dynamic drives. After formating and installing will it be neccessary to re-configure this drive setup and will it do any harm to the data stored. I would appreciate it much if you help with your ideas, especially users who faced such issues before... thanks Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian
  11. I'm googling over a month, I've searched for proxies, ie addons, firewalls, bandwidth shapers etc. and none of them worked out for my particular need. I think its a common issue that every manager faces in todays business and I wonder how people keep internet usage under control in their offices?? In a huge junk of software I just can not find a handy practical application that simply works.. I hope someone points a right direction here.. thanks
  12. hi there, I want to limit a users online time by defining time based restrictons for internet explorer. for example a user may use ie for a total of 1 hours daily and after that period expires, bandwidth of ie is cut down to very low values... If you have heard or used such a program like this or if winxp has such a capability please let me know, thanks
