  1. Looks like the Alky project at Falling Leaf Systems is no more. The team has dis-banded. They have made their source code available under LGPL.

    http://www.fallingleafsystems.com/

Here is the official letter on Google Groups:

    Cody Brocious

It is with great sadness that I announce the closing of Falling Leaf

Systems, LLC. We set out over a year ago to provide users of both "old

and unsupported" as well as "alternative" Operating Systems the

ability to run the latest games for the PC. Unfortunately, Falling

Leaf Systems was unable to achieve that goal.

However, every ending tends to open another door for opportunity and

though we are saddened to announce our departure, we are almost as

excited to announce the immediate availability of ALL source code for

the Alky Project! It is licensed under the LGPL and includes both the

orginal Alky Converter source used to convert the popular Prey Demo to

run on OSX and Linux, as well as the alpha release of the Alky

Compatibility Libraries which attempted to provide a DirectX10

compatible runtime for Windows XP. All of this is available at

    http://www.fallingleafsystems.com/

We have also created some new forums on the site for users to discuss

the coming cycle of DirectX 10 based games. We hope that you'll pop in

there from time to time, and we also hope you join our mailing list to

receive an announcement in case some other Open Source project decides

to carry on the Alky banner.

We appreciate all your past support; Happy gaming!

    Will someone continue this project?

That sucks! I was looking forward to seeing this work on XP all the way through 2015!

  2. Ok, I tested using my own hivexxx.inf file which followed after the other hive files... this approach didn't work, or more likely was overwritten at a later point during installation. I added a test variable to the hivexxx file to see if it was implemented and this was shown in the registry after the install. Find below what I attempted (just to note, also attempted to set the page file location which didnt work either):

    [Version]
    Signature = "$Windows NT$"
    DriverVer=07/01/2001,5.1.2600.3264

    [DelReg]
    HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management","PagingFiles"

    [AddReg]
    HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management","PagingFiles",0x00010000,"D:\pagefile.sys 1800 1800"
    HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment","TEMP",0x00020000,"E:\Windows\Temp"
    HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment","TMP",0x00020000,"E:\Windows\Temp"
    HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment","MyTMP",0x00020000,"E:\Windows\Temp"

Just to let you know, Windows is installed on C much in the usual way, but I have a small D partition and then E for user files, which is where I wanted the Temp folder to be as well (I put it within a Windows folder only so it mimics the normal folder structure).

So my question now basically is, when is the earliest point I can implement this?

Is "%SystemRoot%\TEMP" hard-coded in to Windows as well as "C:\pagefile.sys 768 1536" or is the a file to edit somewhere in the i386 folder to change this? (I prefer the idea of editting one of these files if possible rather than a user script of sorts as I want to make these changes as early as possible)

Nice documentation there. That helps the people who CAN help... to be able. :):thumbup

  3. "ya the tape on those sinks really stuff"

wow i must have been out of it, i meant:

ya the tape on those sinks really suck

So you said: "Oh and modding eats SLI for breakfast." Can you explain that?

What knowledge I have of SLI... basically it's piggybacking the 2 Graphics Cards into 1 card... making things faster...(Never had a SLI setup before...)

Is OC'ing a card a better plan with proper cooling than SLI?

If I can save 300-400 bucks on my video card setup with my new system... I am SO going this way with things. I just want to make sure I pull at least 50FPS in a raid in World Of Warcraft. I am also buying one of those crazy a** network cards that's out. (I have it bookmarked and forgot the name of it.) It's like 200-300 bucks for those network cards.

My overclock is roughly 67.XX% from base of processor (2.66ghz Core2Duo) and this pc is just insanely cool. (All Air.) A video card will add to the heat. I have a decently large case (Antec P182) with a Scythe Ninja cooler rev2 and then the 2 fans that come with the case on the outside. My fan is positioned on the video card side of the processor and blowing upwards towards the top fan. When it came to fitting the heatsink in that case and on my board, everything just barely cleared. :) But it works really well and it's nothing but cold air coming out the back. I am proud of my setup and I don't need the best of the best. I just need to have what works well, and is nice and cold for this Tempe, Arizona home the PC resides in

  4. Nice setup, only VERY expensive memory heat sinks there! There are good ones with frag-tape on the down side, works almost as good as your setup but for 40USD less ;).
These came with frag tape, I stripped it and replaced it with the Arctic Silver Epoxy.

PS: Updated the images to KwikPiks.

ya the tape on those sinks really stuff. epoxy is needed. i bought that kit and only like 2 of them stuck. now i have a different kit and they stick perfectly. you gotta love G92 :)

So, I like that! That is awesome!

  5. So I could in essense actually connect my laptop at home, my desktop at home, and my work computer and it will work just like a private network?

I want to be able to access my home and work computers from both locations... either work.. or home.

    Is this how this works!?

    If so, omg.

  6. I have searched the forums and found nothing on this. It's on 2 totally different computers.

    nlite.exe - Application Error

The Application failed to initialize properly (0x0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.

    So I did.

Then I got to thinking... what could be causing this? :blushing:

I then downloaded the dotnet 2.0 setup. Then Installed it. :sneaky:

Then opened it... And Nlite worked!

Hope this helps those who are having problems.

  7. Well this problem was pure stupidity...

I was pointing it at the /hotfixes/fix/product.exe

When I SHOULD have been pointing it at

    /install/hotfixes/fix/product.exe :)

I was missing the /install part on most of it, including the Uxtheme.dll (replacement) which was causing all the problems.

So its fixed and I even ran into another problem "issue" with the cd, the winnt.sif file was not saving because of "WINISO" but user error not the software...

I didnt extract the file first, then edit, then delete existing in iso image, and then replace.

My fault again.... :D But its flawless now..

NOW for the upgrade from my basic disc :afro: hehe

  8. Using VM ware on a ISO, I get into setup and it goes awhile and then poof this:

Internal Setup data structures are corrupted (Phase 0).

    In the...

    Setuperr.log

What am I doing wrong? And if you find the error causing it, could you please edit it and paste it into "code" on the page so I can correct it?

  9. Hehe I have tried to do this... used all the guides, premade scripts and such, nothing seems to go 100% of the way through...

Like I get error code 4 when it boots up... I got a setup error right at the end of xp setup, something like to view the log "setuperr.log" or something...

I have tried about 10-15 "things" to try to get my stuff to work and it doesnt.

  10. Make a XP Rollup/Sp/Custom Install Disc with everything included but the "Winnt.sif" file and anything that can make it a workable version.. Make the user extract those files from thier very own cd or whatever or edit the winnt.sif file to not have a cd-key so there is no piracy.

This could be very very convient for those users who are just plain dumb like myself?

Well anyhow I hope this idea is a vaild one... :)
