  1. Disconnect every extra device (CD Drives, floppy, fans except CPU fan, etc). Remove any extra cards except video. Use a wired mouse and different keyboard. Now what happens? If it works OK, add one thing back at a time and test until you find the culprit.

nothing like that would cause the system to stay on, i'm almost willing to bed its an ACPI issue [however i'm no gambler].

my old server does it, computers at my school do it, i'm sure its no different. you just need to push the power button once.

however, that leaves me to wonder what a different power button would do for the situation.

I would not bother to post this advice unless I had already solved this exact problem using this exact procedure. It may not work for him, but it also might work for him.

  2. Hi thank you all for the replies.

Fizban- cannot use runas because then the application being run would run in the context of the administrator having a different "HKCU" hive whereas i need to be able to run the regedit app as the user or by any other means but the key being modified should be under the user's registry hive and not the administrator's.

dubsdj: startup items ha sounds very promising and yes indeed that is what i intend to do.you know prior to reading this i was going to run another computer login script which would give all domain users write permissions on the regedit application using setacl or cacls and then run my outlook express script. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just for clarification, how do you plan to access HKCU when no one is logged in? --and I quote: "And it runs before any user logs in.. It runs while the CTRL ALT DELETE screen is loading."

  3. Most air conditioning systems? All air conditioning systems remove moisture from the air. Unless it's short of gas and it can't cool as well as it could if it had a full charge.

When air flows over the evaporator coil, the moisture condenses on it and is basically removed from the air. While some systems may be better than others, the basic idea of humidity control is there in all A/C systems.

Nope, evaporative air conditioners as used in the US SouthWest do not remove moisture --- in fact they add it.

what the hell whith this PC

    is it a virus?

and how to remove it !!

    PLZ help

It's likely a bad nic (network card) but first try changing the port on the switch that this computer connects to (might be a bad port).

  5. This is rare and related to certain software that you have installed. Some Norton products are notorious for causing this. Normally no one has to change IRPStackSize.

  6. The problem is a potential issue. Someone installs IE7, then SP2, and then for some reason uninstalls IE7. It'll roll back files to SP1 (pre-IE7 install versions). It's the old out of order uninstalls problem.

Thanks, that makes sense and relieves me too. I don't see that affecting me then.

  7. What is this all about?

Quote from Susan Bradley in Windows Secrets Newsletter:

"The unexpected release has been rather confusing, especially as I'm still bleary-eyed from the time change. The release notes state that if you applied IE 7 after installing Windows Server 2003 SP1 (and who wouldn't have?), you now need to uninstall IE 7 before you install SP2.

Let me state that again: Before installing SP2 on your Windows 2003 servers, you must uninstall IE 7 if you previously installed IE 7 after Windows 2003 SP1."

  9. Hey,

KB928090 does not resolve the associated RunOnceEx failure.

    laze.

It does if everything is properly installed. I integrate IE7 using nLite and then runonceex the hotfixes (with noreboot, and force overwrite). All is fine on first boot and runonceex works first time and everytime thereafter. No huge delay during the process either, it's all very quick. Not what you want to hear, I'm sure.

  10. I'm working on a friends computer that I can't get The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Tool to install. After running the tool to check I got this report pasted below. In all programs when I point to the Microsoft Office program the first thing in dropdown list ia an icon to activate. Could it be that this program has never been activated? I would ask my friend, but he is a little less knowledgeable about computers, but is it possible the person that built computer for him didn't activate this MS program?

    Thanks, Foz

  11. I attempted to install Vista on an Nforce4 machine with an older 15 inch LCD. The install windows were too large and mostly off the screen to the lower right. I could work around some of the early windows with the old alt-spacebar trick, but eventually I got stuck. Any ideas? (not practical to change monitors)

  12. The perfect, universal, hardware transcending sysprep image.

If anyone had ever gotten this to work in the full universal sense, it would be one of the hottest topics on the net (as big or bigger than nLite or RyanVM). Every great (and not so great) mind has been trying to do this since the original Ghost (very first imaging program) came out. No one has succeeded except in a very limited sense (they get it to work for a small subset of the vast variety of machines). Even the commercial attempts are not even close to "universal" (Although UIU has come closest IMHO). Maybe Vista will solve this at last. Time will tell.

  13. They updated the BIOS and changed the fan. I am currently at a loss.

    Specs:

    Intel D845HV motherboard

    Intel P4 1.5Ghz processor

    640 MB RAM

    nVidia Geforce 4000 video card

    Windows XP Pro SP2

Does anyone know how to fix this?

    the_guy

My first check would be for 3 wires on the fan, second (if you have 3 wires) check to be sure they are plugged into the cpu fan header on the motherboard and not some other header.

  14. I have made an IE 7 addon to use with nlite...with this addon and RyanVM's Post-SP2 Update pack I have been able to make an install CD that is completely up to date with windows update. I have tested this addon with a copy of XP Corp and it worked perfectly...enjoy!

    http://rapidshare.com/files/12601764/Baseb..._Addon.cab.html

Gee, an addon from an unknown guy with a total of one posts. I can hardly wait to get this ---- not!

  15. Serial ATA interface disc drives are designed for easy installation. It is not necessary to set any jumpers, terminators, or other settings on this drive for proper operation. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector is for factory use only.

Western Digital Serial ATA hard drives ship from the factory with a jumper shunt in the

Default position (across pins 1 and 2). It is not necessary to move the jumper shunt on the

drive for workstation or desktop use.

Again, you do not need to set a jumper on Serial ATA drives.

Google claims that it's not quite that simple, some motherboards and\or sata chips only work with the jumper set to sata1. YMMV
