  1. Hi, I have 2 Athlon 1800XP systems with AOPEN nforce2 boards running (133MHZ/DDR266) since 2 years. Some days ago one system showed some inexplicably errors. I shifted the 2 RAM modules in this PC and the BIOS beeped memory error. So I performed a memtest86 run on both PCs: The results are alarming. I have used the following ram modules: 1) 2 Infineon DDR266 256MB 2) 1 HP DDR333 512MB + 1 Infineon DDR400 256MB I got all ram modules to show some error depending on slot position and test time!!! Only when reducing to FSB100=DDR200 , 2 of them show no errors in memory slot1, the other still show errors after hours of running. How can I find out which ram modules are OK or how can I test the boards?
  2. Google for a tool called ERASER. Its one of the best and it's free. It overwrites the "empty" area of the harddisk with some patterns. Formatting or deleting does usually not physically destroy data.
  3. Remains the Power LED "on"? like in some suspend modes or is it a real shut down? I had a similar problem with a AMD system but it was power supply related (there was no defect - for some reason the board and the PSU didn't like each other ;-) Try to go into BIOS and look at the voltages and fan rpm. Or try to interchange/shift RAM modules. Graphics card? Most important question: Did it ever worked? Or is it a new system?
  4. activeports 1.4 from ntutility is not bad too. But both do not have a filter or time logging function.
  5. Removing the device works, but you cannot use the USB port afterwards for anything else. W2K does not recognize another device in this port. I have also doubts reinserting the same device again. Thats why I am looking for some diagnostic tools or a way to completely remove the USB stuff and reinstall them.
  6. Hi, after installing a card reader and a USB 2.0 PCI card, the "Safely Remove USB Device" function does not work proper anymore. I have tried cards with VIA and NEC chips. Sometimes the device cannot be released anymore. (Device still in use from explorer.exe) And the other time the message to remove pops up but the device is still powered!!!. I use USB Memorysticks and usually the LED goes off when the device can be removed. This worked before installing the stuff and still works on a second PC with built in USB2.0 hardware. How can I remove the USB related stuff and do a clean reinstall? This happens on all USB ports (2.0+1.1)
  7. Hi, a few days ago, I have installed a DSL internet connection (Fritzbox). Since then I am wondering what applications are accessing the internet. My traffic monitor shows data transfers but unfortunately not the application behind. So I am looking for a (free) software that shows me the application or process which is currently accessing the internet. Windowsupdate etc. is switched off.
  8. It's running again! The repair option of the W2K CD does not work, but the reinstall/repair which "Ctrl-X" suggested did work. I was sceptic first because I had to reenter licence key and country specific things but all software is running again. I had a similar problem in the past with a damaged registry from mains power interrupt where all repair efforts did not work. At that time I had to reinstall windows.
  9. Hi, I had to replace my Mobo of an W2K machine and afterwards I got the blue screen: "inaccessible_boot_device error" Google tells me that this is caused by different controller hardware. Old system had AMD/VIA, new has nForce2. So my problem is to change the IDE Driver to a generic one. But how can I do this without access to the running system? F8 works but Safe mode etc. is not possible.(->BSOD) I have now installed on the second partition (D:) a new working W2K but how can I fix the errors on C:? I have a lot of applications installed and do not want to spend day(s) to do it again. There are some similar postings but I found no answer from people who did it with success. But I think it should not be impossible if it's only a wrong driver issue?
  10. MJPEG is used by Canon digital cameras (and others) for video mode. MPEG2 does not work for me. (MSFN codec pack 2.8) In the codec pack description I found only splitters but no decoders. When not using Players with built in decoder I think it will not work. Windows XP with Mediaplayer10 is also capable but unfortunately I have W2k ;-)
  11. Hi, after testing MSFN codec pack in VirtualPC it seems that mpeg2,mjpeg and some other will not work under some circumstances. They only work with players which have codecs themself (MPC, Windows Media Player). GSPOT or Irfanview(Player with no internal codecs) fail. AFAIK mjpeg and mpeg2 codecs are not free available on the net. OK, FFDSHOW does it but is it allowed? Any suggestions?
  12. Thanks, since the MSFN pack has the same+newer content as TAiNs (+ a little more like GSpot), I will give it a try. But what is with Quicktime and Realmedia? Do they work? The thread is a little contradictory with this topic. (+The files from TAiN are quite old: QT Version 6.5...?)
  13. I'm a multimedia dummy and a little confused about the various codec packs which are available. I only want to be able to play the most important multimedia files on my workstation. (DVDs,MJPEG,MPEG2,MP3,Quicktime,Realmedia,MP4,XVID-DIVX) At the moment I use CCCP+QTalt+Realalt+MainConcept MJPEG 3.0+MPC But it seems not to be easy to integrate them proper with HFSLIP on my W2K-CD. I don't know much about codecs,filters,splitters,demuxer... and how to use them - so can anybody tell me with few words what the pros and cons of the various codec packages are? (TAiN's, Sharks, CCCP, Satzuki, MSFN...) And which of them can be successfully integrated with HFSLIP? I want to avoid spending hours for each try because I have bad experience with too much codecs hogging my system.
  14. This au3 script should work for german version: BlockInput(1) Run(@ProgramFilesDir & '\7-Zip\7zFM.exe') sleep(500) If WinExists("7-Zip Dateimanager") Then WinActivate('7-Zip Dateimanager', '') Send('!E') Sleep(100) Send('O') WinWait('Optionen', '') sleep(200) ControlClick('Optionen', '', 1023) ControlClick('Optionen', '', 'Button1') ControlClick('Optionen', '', 1) ControlClick('Optionen', '', 'Button2') WinWait('7-Zip Dateimanager', '') WinClose('7-Zip Dateimanager', '') EndIf BlockInput(0) Nevertheless I still need some reg tweaks for default compressing settings, visible grid lines etc... but this script enables all archive associations without the need of reboot.
  15. Afaik "Windows Installer KB884016-V2-X86.exe" is for Windows2000 and up, it should not work on ME or even show up.
  16. Thanks, but unfortunately all paths are hardcoded inside reg-file so it won't work with non english installation etc. also this takes no effect until restart. This is why I am looking for an AUTOIT or similar.
  17. Hi, I know there are many threads about installing 7zip silently, but none with file associations. Registry import doesn't work because absolute paths are stored! Does anybody have a working AUTOIT script? (I am not very skilled in coding scripts)
  18. I found a weird solution: md %temp%\xvdghhfz start /wait robocopy.exe %temp% %temp%\xvdghhfz /S /E /MOVE rd /S /Q %temp%\xvdghhfz but it works. Of course it cannot delete the temp files inuse but all others
  19. Hi, I want to clean the user %temp% folder and some others automatically after logon. I have tried to use the del command, but it seems that XP always stores some temp files which cannot be deleted. So the del stops execution when reaching a file which cannot be accessed. Is there an alternative method to delete files, skipping not accessable files? (Like the robocopy for copying?) I do not want to use any third party tools.
  20. Hi, I have been watching this forum with great interest for some months now, but I found out that sometimes silent installs are made too simple for some configurations. The silent switches in the sticky posts are mostly only basic switches. I have german language and installation on D: so the following issues occur: 1) different languages - localizations 2) environment variables for softcoding installation paths 3) reg or ini files for disabling autoupdate etc. 4) auditabile install packages (IEXPRESS etc.) This is no special request or contribution, I only want to exchange experience with other people which have similar problems+needs. Any interest?
  21. Hi, can a HFSLIPped W2K-CD (with all new patches etc.) be used to update or repair an older W2K installation? -> Booting from the CD an reinstalling Windows "=repair". Are the files beeing updated? Before I smash up my old W2K installation I would like to know what will happen ;-)
  22. I turned autorun off. But it did not solve the problem, maybe some drive report not(never:-) ready with defective CD. So either the drive hangs or reports "no media present". Although I was able to erase some CDs with Nero 6.6 again, some still are unrecognizable. One funny thing: Some CDs written by Nero and automatically compared afterwards cannot be read after re-inserting (disk blank). So what does Nero when comparing the files???
  23. I tried a couple of these programs like Isobuster CDRoller DVDdisaster Retroburn etc. but NONE of them can solve the problem if the drive is not able to read/identify the disk. (->Firmware issue?) But I found that sometimes new DVD-ROM drives are capable to accept the disks better than older DVD-Burners. So some of my disks have been restored in "cheap" drives now. But it takes a lot of attempts to find a combination that works.
  24. I have frequently problems with DVD+RW and DVD-RAM. Sometimes they burn fine sometimes they have burn errors. But even if they burn fine, some of them cannot be read afterwards. I did not have mentionable problems with burning VideoDVDs yet, only with Data-DVDs. Erasing is not possible anymore. The media is not recognized in the drive. Explorer hangs. Is there a software that can erase a media regardless of the content? Or is this drive firmware specific? I am using LG GSA-4120B + LG GSA-4082B + Benq/4kus DRW-1S41 with Nero 6.6 full + CDBurnerXPpro
  25. Hi, this should be a known problem but I found no solution so far. When inserting a defective Cd or DVD (read errors or burn failure ...) , the explorer hangs and needs to be killed by task manager. Is there any timeout value in the registry or something like this which can be set to avoid this problem (autoeject?) or is it hardware related from the CDROM drives? Any comments would be appreciated.
