  1. In my WinXP there is a folder called "C:\WINNT\Installer" with a lot of files and folders in it, the size is quite big, 419 MB!! Some of the files are more than 3 years old. I am running out of disk space in drive C, and desperately like to relocate that folder, either fully or partially into another partition or drive, does someone has experience on it and could help? Thanks a lot. Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian
  2. I am using Win98SE and IE6.0 SP1, if I try to delete a lot of files in a folder, Windows Explorer start to freeze. In the forum I found a solution by replacing BROWSEUI.DLL and BROWSELC.DLL that are meant for IE5.50 on WinME. The most recent version of BROWSEUI.DLL is 5.50.4948.700. Now, the most recent security update KB905915 has among others replaced BROWSEUI.DLL with the version 6.00.2800.1692, resulting with the same problem again. Sure, I immediately replaced it back with the version 5.50.4948.700 that works just fine. After this replacement, the Windows Update keeps on telling me though, that Security Update KB905915 is required. Is there a way to trick the Windows Update not to tell me to do the KB905915 update?
  3. Answer for mitsubishi: I am using 512K ADSL connection. As mentioned by mitsubishi, I have tried with Firefox 1.07, that website open in few seconds only. What a speed browser!! However, nothing seems to be perfect in this world. Websites that need Mapguide won't work with Firefox, there is no suitable plug-in, the Java Edition of Mapguide does not work either, what a pity.
  4. If you are using IE6SP1 under Win98SE and did all the security updates, you may face a problem that I experience, i.e., if you try to delete all the contents of a folder with many files in Windows Explorer, then it will end up with Explorer Not Responding where you can get around it by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and End Task, or wait many minutes until Windows Explorer is back to live. You can simulate that problem e.g., by copying (not moving!!) WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, mine with 1,550 files, into say TEMP\SYSTEM folder, then select ALL the contents of TEMP\SYSTEM folder, right-click, press SHIFT key and click Delete in the drop down menu, so that it shall delete the files right away, not move them to Recycle Bin. We can work around that problem by replacing following two System files with those taken from IE5.5: browselc.dll browseui.dll But I don't know whether the security will not be compromized. Has anyone a better solution to that problem?
  5. To answer eidenk, following is an example of the website that I have problem with: http://www.detik.com As I said, I can open that website with IE6SP2 under WinXP SP2 with no problem. BTW, for IE6 SP1 under the Win98SE I have done all the security updates. Anything else that I can do to improve that situation?
  6. Somehow I have found how to do it. First we have to right-click the Toolbar or Menu area, the "Customize" dialog box will pop up. While the "Customize" dialog box is open, right-click the Menu or Toolbar item that we want to customize on the Menu or Toolbar area, not in the "Customize" dialog box, that will bring a rectangular border on that item, and a drop-down menu will come up enabling us to do the customization on that item. What a trick!!!
  7. Using IE6 SP1 under Win98SE to open certain websites, especially one with php page, can take almost forever, it sometime even end up with IE6 Not Responding!! However, opening the same site with IE6 SP2 under WinXP SP2 pose no problem. Does someone has the same experience and know how to work around it? Thanks a lot.
  8. I am using Office 2003 SP2 under Windows XP Proffessional SP2. When trying to customize Menu or Toolbar by right-clicking the toolbar area --> "Customize..." --> "Commands" tab, regardless of what I select under the "Categories" box, be it "File", "Edit", "Tools" etc., the "Modify Selection" button is always grayed out. Can anyone help to overcome this problem? Maybe by modifying Registry or Policy? Thanks a lot.
  9. Just an additional information on how I finally could remove WMP9. To be frank I was also doing MDGx's "98SEMP10", and it seems to be the reason why I got the error message mentioned at the beginning of this Post. However, in his "98SEMP10.EXE", MDGx has smartly created a backup folder called "C:\98MP9\SYSTEM" and copied all replaced files into that folder. I restored those files to the folder "WINDOWS\SYSTEM" and reregister them. Guess what.... after that I was able to remove WMP9 from "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel!! This may be a challenge for the experts, such as MDGx, to perhaps modify WMP.INF or something else, enabling the removal of WMP9 after the WMP10 transplant. Finally, it might be better to completely wipe out the WMP9 before reinstalling it as described in following website (mentioned by eidenk): http://erpman1.tripod.com/current/wmp9del.htm
  10. For some reason I need to reinstall WMP9 in my Win98SE. When I tried to remove it from Control Panel > Add/Remove Program I got error message that RUNDLL32 caused a stack fault in module KERNEL32.DLL, and the uninstallation process stopped. Perhaps someone could help, e.g., informing on how to remove the WMP9 manually? Thanks a lot.
  11. Thanks to the_guy. But no, I don't use neither one of those.
  12. I am using Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on Win98SE. After some time the IE6 does not display pictures. When that happens, following the steps mentioned in Microsoft KB283807 "Pictures Are Not Displayed on Web Sites in Internet Explorer" does not solve the problem, it can only be solved by "Repair"-ing IE6 in the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Anyone has the same experience and found the solution to prevent it?
  13. Thank you all for the kind effort to help. As a Win98SE enthusiast, I always do the best I can to maintain it, including but not limited to regularly run defragging (Diskeeper Lite) and Regclean, all the Windows security and system updates, many optimization tweak, like getting rid of NameSpace mentioned in the registry. Just now I tried under the safe mode, the result is the same, the longer we work with Windows Explorer, moving (opening) from one folder to the other, the slower it will be. I am almost convinced, it must be sort of memory leak, Windows Explorer must be keeping the contents of the folders in some cache memory, the problem is we don't know how to possibly control it.
  14. Thanks to alexanrs. Unfortunately replacing BROWSELC.DLL and BROWSEUI.DLL from IE 5.5 does not solve my problem. I have the feeling whenever I click a folder, the contents of that folder is somehow kept in sort of cache memory, it is apparent from the fact that when we reopen a folder that has been opened before, then it is quite fast. But when we click from one folder to the other, that cache memory is somehow getting full. Any other suggestion?
  15. When I open the Windows Explorer in Win98SE, and roaming from one folder to the others in the Explorer Bar, it will take longer and longer time to display the contents of the folder in Details View at the right panel. Closing and reopening the Windows Explorer does not help at all. Only reboot will bring the speed of Windows Explorer back to normal, but as we start to move from one folder to the others, Windows Explorer is getting slower and slower again. I was thinking on some sort of memory leak, but the System Monitor shows that I still have more than 170 MByte of unused physical memory, and Swapfile in use is 0 MByte. Does anyone experience this kind of problem and found a solution to it?
  16. You guys are right. Adobe Reader 7 is much better in many aspects, like speed etc., with one exception though, it is buggy for digital signature!! When we use "Windows Certificate Security" as Signing Method, then right away reopen a file after it is signed, it will say: "the document has been updated since signed", even we did nothing in between. By the way, inspired by the setting of Adobe Reader 7, by adding following Registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe and set the Default to: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe will solve my problem. I.e., clicking a PDF link in IE6 will now start Adobe Reader 6. Meanwhile we still can work also with Adobe Acrobat 5. Hope this will be useful for those having similar problem as mine.
  17. Thanks to sunamigaza for the SUBSTOR.INF. Unfortunately there is no reply from Maximus regarding the possibility of using "Eject" as described in my message above. Has someone else any idea?
  18. With IE6 on WinXP Professional SP1, Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5. works perfectly all right. I can switch between "Display PDF in Browser" or not with no problem. When I installed Adobe Reader 6.0.4. needed for digital signature, things start become weird. The setting of "Display PDF in Browser" in both Adobe do not work anymore. Regardless whether it is turned on or off, IE6 won't display any PDF file, unless Adobe Reader is running. When Adobe Reader 6 is running, clicking link to PDF file will then will display it in the browser. If Adobe Reader 6 is not running then clicking PDF link in IE6 will result "Could not find Adobe Acrobat" followed by two other error messages and end up with IE6 is closed. I am convinced, there must be experts out there that know exactly how IE6 starts an application like Adobe Reader, plug-in? Extension? So that solution may be possible to the problem above, perhaps by tweaking the Registy? Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.
  19. This message is for sunamigaza. After downloading the attachment TwinMos.ZIP and try to open it with WinZip, following error message comes up: "Cannot open file: it does not apear to be a valid archive." Is the file corrupted? Thx a lot.
  20. Hi Maximus, That is a master-piece!! Just would like to feedback to you, that it should be allowed to unplug the USB drive after right-click the drive in Windows Explorer and in the drop-down menu then click Eject. When we do that, your driver will come up with "Unsafe Removal of Device" popup. Would be great if this can be corrected.
  21. Ideally would be to have the functionallity of WinXP in Win98SE, so that we don't have to install a new driver each time a different pen-drive or thumb-drive is used. Has someone an idea how to do it?
  22. Creative Zen PMC (Personal Media Center) only comes with device driver for WinXP. Is there a way to "transplant" that XP driver to Win98SE? A registry trick perhaps that will allow its installation into Win98SE? Has someone a better idea please?
