looks like you removed something to do with characters. kinda like looking at chineese text if you dont have the language pack installed for it. it shows boxes n such cause it doesnt know how to render the chineese text. so here is likely some special character and vista cant show it to you so it shows that instead.
so i'm just guessing that windows doesnt know how to render or decrypt special signs, designs..etc. mine does same thing btw. i think its cause of removing Charmap. but again i'm just guessing
These characters include some regular used symbols and signs such as © (copyright), ® (registered), ± (plus-minus), ™ (trademark), Ω (ohm), √ (square root), ∞ (infinity), ‼ (double exclamation mark), → (various arrows), ¿ (inverted question mark), ° (degree), µ (micro), ≈ (almost equal to), ≠ (not equal to), ☺ (smilies face), ₠ (Euro currency), € (Euro), £ (English Pound), ¥ (Japanese Yen), ¢ (cent), ² (superscript), ½ (fraction), ≤≥ (greater or small than or equal to), ℅ (care of), «» (double angle quotation mark), œ (Latin capital and small letter), β (Greek capital and small letter), Ѿ (Cyrillic capital and small letter), ك (Arabic letters), א (Hebrew letters) and etc.0 -
so you must have something better then right?
You mean like making one yourself, custom tailored according to your own personal needs? Because I think most people do...
you obviously missed what i was responding too since how are you gonna make your own list if you dont know what each service does? said BV was worthless when all you do is simply use it to research what you think you need or dont need, there is no download there thats preconfigured, He mentions on the site his suggestions are based on his opinon from his experiments and gives plenty of warnings, either way you have to decide what you dont need for yourself
lots of ways to look each service up, but BV shows each one in order with info on what it does. from there with that you can simply use his registry creator and make your own .reg file. so the BV site is not worthless.
tweakguides has one too and its pretty much exactly the same, all of which was copied from BV. Like i said, what is better than that? guessing?

i agree that the extra stuff should be there on the installation disk...but be optional upon install. a simple advanced section for advanced users before install windows that lets users opt out of installing various components.
with W7, MS is somewhat listening, its said there will be more features to remove in the "turn windows features on/off" section. but pointless if it still hogs space
secondary drive is one thing, but i prefer to install some games on my SSD, cause they load so much faster and hence why i prefer as much space as possible.
but all i do is browse net and game, so doesnt really require much from an OS. i'm sure a 1 gig OS would do me plenty, too bad Linux doesnt game well or i'd use a lite linux version.

Yeah, they replaced "Dll Hell" (in my opinion, a small problem, but they didn't like to be nagged to do tech support) with "Bloat Hell" (a big problem for users in so many ways - let's say just as something that obviously isn't right). 10 times the code, a lot less functionality than 10X. Inefficient. Waste. Not "green".
I would have to politely disagree - using hard drive space or not using it doesn't make the device any more or less 'green'. Also, if Windows doesn't use it, meaning *you* want to use it for storage, that's only an argument for more space for your stuff (you're still going to use the space). I just fail to understand the complaints of people with 500+GB HDDs complaining that Wndows uses 4 - 8% of the drive. Why buy a 500GB (or larger) drive if you aren't going to use it?
Also, the complaints about WinSXS only benefitting tech support are largely just flamebait. DLL hell affected EVERYONE using .dll files, users and developers alike (partly because the darn developers would write to a specific version, and then install that version - rather than using the one that shipped with the OS and use those features). It means users no longer have to worry about what apps they have installed when installing another app, and worry if this version is going to overwrite that version, and cause one or the other to fail (or both). It's not perfect, but with 500GB HDD standard on most new PCs (and even 160 and 320GB HDDs standard on most newer laptops), this is probably the best solution all around until something better comes along (if at all).
Again, you are free to your opinion, but this is like complaining that Vista caches up to 90% of the available RAM in the box to make the system faster, rather than leaving it unused. You paid for the resource (RAM or HDD space), why not use it for something constructive rather than let it sit fallow and have some other OS problems go unsolved? I have to disagree with your complaints.
i have 64 gig SSD. so what about me?
but i think the arguements are those of us who dont use 90% of what Vista has. i dont use windows mail, natural language or media center. some of that stuff is nearly a gig in size alone. it just sits there, does nothing but take space if you dont ever use it. some people store videos on drives and 500 gigs isnt much for that. so yes the OS taking 4-8% can be a big deal to some.
so i vlite and now instead of 13 gigs for a fresh install, its now 5 gigs, works great and does what i want....quite a difference.

Black Viper has a solid list.
Personally I find BV's suggestions worthless but if it floats your boat go for it.
so you must have something better then right?

Basically they are telling you to futz around with your CMOS settings. This type of problem is almost always related to your BIOS. Try flashing your BIOS to the latest version. Disable your on board sound in your CMOS, try fiddling with power management settings... stuff like that.
oh i see. i did that stuff long ago with my first sound card. lol
if i didnt, i'd expect problems with previous other cards.
but got latest bios and audio chip is off. power management is set to high power.

more of a rant to vent than an expectation of an answer. but i sent creative support this email for some help...again, and i just dont get their response.
my last email to them.
unsatisfied with previous response, i ll clarify my problem precisely.installed latest driver. whenever i reboot it works fine. its ONLY when
i SHUTDOWN the PC and then start it up, i recieve "No audio device
installed" however, if i reboot then it works fine, always does on
reboots but not after shuttingdown. seems very odd and i dont know whats
different between the 2 but after that shutdown its as if there is no
hardware installed at all. i have ALREADY read the entire knowledgbase
article about "no audio devices" and is not the problem. i have windows
audio service running. i have tried reinstalling the driver....many
times. i have tried reinstalling the OS and then installed driver with
nothing else and it still occurs after a shutdown. i must then reboot to
make it work....very annoying. i have also tried previous version
driver.i have moved card to another pci-e slot. i only have 2 that i can
use. a more technical answer or suggestion would be appreciated, please
dont respond with suggestions of things that i just mentioned i already
tried
and response from my [sarc] good buddy [\sarc] sin yee at support
Thank you for writing back to us.I understand that you are still having the same issue. I apologize for
the inconvenience that has brought to you and I will try my best to
assist you.
To resolve this issue please ensure that the onboard audio is disabled.
I hope that the above information helps.
If you still require assistance, please reply to this email with any
previous correspondence to ensure the quickest and most accurate
service.

can someone translate that short vague message for me....or at least try to help me with the problem described in the first quote?
cause i dont see what disabling my audio has anything to do with my problem that i precisely described or was my email just not well explained?

vista x64.
recently got x-fi fatility pro pci-e
install latest fatality drivers, works great. i can reboot all i want and still works fine
however, if i click shutdown, upon reboot, i suddenly have no audio device installed.
i have to manually remove the driver and reinstall it.
what is happening during shutdown that doesnt happen when rebooting?
i cant figure this out for nothing and is driving me nuts
please help
(note: i do have system restore and page file turned off. never an issue before but thought i'd mention it)

it seems just to show whats in windows directory, but its a start
You should navigate to whatever directory you want, then press Ctrl+B. It will list all files inside that directory + all files inside subdirectories all together flat in the lister. Isn't that what you wanted? Afterwards you could do whatever you want with the files, even drop them to another Explorer window(s).
GL
i'll try again...but when i did it inthe C: directory,it just shows whats in windows folder for some reason ..i wanted every file shown in the C: drive, so i'll play with it again.
Sorry, with 400 posts, I thought you'd know what a command prompt is and would recognize the "dir" command. I guess I was wrong.lol, 400 posts only shows, i either have alot of questions or alot of opinions and i never once asked any question regarding commands....i just click pretty icons like most computer users. proabably not a good idea to assume anything in a forum, posts from someone is a very limiting way of knowing anything about them.

is there a way to view every file that resides in all folders and subfolders in the same window without showing individual folders?
in other words, every file thats in every folder in C: drive, i want to view as if they were all in one folder....any way to do that or some software that can do that?
i'd also like to know if there is a software that can hide/filter any file types of my choosing from view
1. Total Commander (Ctrl+B).
2. Same (you can configure it).

*Edit: Smiley code broke my post. That's Ctrl+B.
it seems just to show whats in windows directory, but its a start

not sure how to display just the filename without path, but this could be a start:
dir /s /b
and you can do
dir /s /b /o:n
to alphabetize
huh?
that made no sense to me whatsoever

i did a search but didnt find the specific post to answer my question as some 30 threads came up
if i use vlite to integrate sp1 for x64, are there any known problems compared to using OEM pre integrated?
i'm asking cause the OEM disk i have doesnt seem very clean, has alot of themes in it and hard to say what else.

and you'll have peace of mind knowing that if you buy any new games, hardware, software, etc. it will work straight out of the box.
lmao...thats the funniest thing i read in a while that made me laugh outloud. i guess you forgot what OS is being discussed cause theres alot of hardware/games/software that never works out of box even on a fresh install of Ultimate. lol, good one though.

i wanted to know if this would be faster than standard hard drive?
how would i get vista to install on it? upon install it only shows my hard drive...is there a driver i need to show CF from a usb card reader?

I usually tend to have bad luck with Vlite in some form or fashion, but i reverse integrate and now got SP1 iso, so decided to give latest version a go
I'm trying to save myself some time and trouble, i'm just not good with virtual machines..i've tried several times
so i wanted to know if theres any known problems with removing components under SP1. my typical problem with previous vlite versions before sp1 was usually WU trying to install fixes for compents i removed.
here is my settings, just wanted to check to see if any of them causes problems under SP1

My vLite install seems to be going well on my Kohjinsha SH8. However I get the following error when I try to backup my fresh install using DriveimageXML:
Could not initialise Windows Volume Shadow service (VSS) Code: error 80000FFFF
Make sure VSSVC.exe is running in your task mangager.
Click help for more information.
Clicking OK gives me the following additional error:
Warning: Volume could not be properly locked. You can still continue but the backup image may be damaged.
I would continue but I fear the backup WILL be damaged.
I assume that I have taken out one component too many. Your thoughts please.
it doesnt have to be a vlite problem
looks like driveimage answered your own question to me. did you check to see if the required service is running.
type services.msc in run box
It is not possible to backup open files in Windows XP/2003 without this service running, and you never know when backup software, or CD/DVD Writing software, might need to have this service running.0 -
alright thanks. i remember that post n all, but thought maybe there were a few things i could still remove
while i love having components removed and certain settings taken care of, theres always something that keeps pulling me back to retail disk.
i loved my last install i did just a few days ago, very stripped down but noticed OS was a bit laggy for some reason, even with prefetch still on
then installed vlilte to redo some things and WM imager thing wasnt working properly and caused a BSOD when i opened vlite and imported the OS copy...odd, likely i removed too much causing problems. plus the idea of not being able to use SP1 when it comes out is a bummer
why do you curse me MS?
0 -
i just did a temporary install of vista ultimate from retail disk
cant believe installed is 21.6 gigs. thats crazy
usually with my vlite options my install size is about 8-9 gigs.
or just over 900mb's iso
0 -
as title says
what should i NOT remove to have SP1 working?
0 -
if i understand correctly. i think you simply install vista retail to a secondary partition, when you get to OOBE expereince, where it asks for a name..etc you press cntrl/alt/F3 and enter audit mode.
then you would install your apps. exit and boot into normal os. then use WAIK imagex to make an image iso. then use that iso in vlite and editfrom there
thats just my understanding of it, thats why i asked about doing SP1 via that method but maybe no one knows for sure
