  1. I've been searching and searching for an answer to this and just can't find anything! So I'm starting to post this question on any forum I am/was active on that has technically-literate people. If anyone can provide any information, I would be incredibly grateful! I'm looking for information on LaserJet's and their ability to piece multiple data streams together into a single document. I'm not sure what the actual technical terms are -- if you know, please tell me! The proprietary software I work with sends data to the printer in pieces -- for instance, with a form print, it has the generic form text, the user information, and the specific form text. The system prints these in three streams -- the LaserJet then compiles this to a single document. The P3005-series printers support this, but I cannot find anything similar to this in the documentation. What other models support it? What is the feature/process called? Any help that can be provided is MUCH appreciated!! Thanks!! -- Nathan
  2. I've read places that it's 10, I've read places it's 25 ... which is it? My predicament is this: I've got proprietary software that runs as a Windows Service, which monitors for files that are uploaded to a shared directory. The files are small (<5kb) so the current limit of 10 connections in XP works fine. We are wanting to combine this with another piece of software, where program updates are pulled from a share on the same PC. These updates reach upwards of 60MB, so the 10 concurrent connections limit could easily be reached. We need a cheap legal way around this (hacking the TCP stack violates the EULA). Server OS's are out because they require a CAL for each device accessing a share. WINE/VMWare on a *nix box is possible, we are working to "hack" the Windows Service to run under those constraints. But, 25 concurrent connections might be the answer. What's the limit in Vista? All the EULA says is "(other editions)".
  3. Sounds like I'm sticking with Terminals for now. That SmartCode program looks nice, but seems to be more geared for internal PCs on a local network; 99% of the PC's and servers in my list are at remote locations on different networks. I'd be willing to lose SSH connectivity if the RDP section is strong enough, though, so I'll read more on SmartCode later.
  4. I've been testing mRemote and Terminals, but neither are quite complete programs; I'm wondering if someone knows of anything else. I have 100+ servers and appliances that I connect to weekly for management. I'm looking for an application that can save all those connections and manage them -- similar to what both mRemote and Terminals do, but that are actually stable. Those programs also lack features like alphabetizing the connections in the Favorites list. I need it store an IP address and a port, a domain, username, and password. Be able to use both RDP and SSH. Have multiple tabs/windows inside of it for multiple connections. And have encrypted passwords, so I can securely save the passwords. I'm not sure if anything exists beyond Terminals for mRemote. Anyone know of anything?
  5. I'm not sure anything can be done, but I'm asking everywhere I can. I have a Dell laptop for work, and a docking station at the office with a secondary monitor attached. When I undock, everything is fine. But if I place the laptop back in the dock, all the icons on my desktop are rearranged, randomly. It appears it's trying to use the external monitor as the primary for a brief second when booting. Same thing happens whether the laptop is on or off when I dock it. Any ideas how to force it to use the laptop LCD as the primary always, no matter what?
  6. If someone has any thoughts on this, please let me know. I'm stumped, can't find anything online ... This only happens when you're creating a message (replying, forwarding, or creating new). The Tools menu doesn't drop down -- it highlights just as the other menu's do, but nothing drops down. I've reset all the menu's, I've run a Detect & Repair, I've repaired the install, I've run a chkdsk (now I'm reaching) ... I'm down to uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but if a repair didn't work and knowing my previous experiences with Office, neither will an uninstall. Which leaves formatting the box, which seems ridiculous. I cannot replicate it on another PC. If you remove all options from the menu, a small box still appears beneath the word "Tools", but not so on the affected PC. It just highlights orange-ish and nothing appears below it. All other menu's work fine. I also thought that there might be a toolbar conflict, but there are no add-ons installed. I also disabled Word 2003 as the editor just in case. I'm lost. Anyone have any thoughts?? EDIT: I totally posted this in the wrong forum before, sorry!
  7. Looks pretty close! I'll bring it up to the boss man and see what he thinks. If there are any other suggestions let me know. BTW, yes, that is what I would like -- something to export the errors from the event logs. This one does look nice, with it's ability to do remote computers locally ... I'll check it out.
  8. Here's the short of it -- my IT team monitors about 30 servers, all running Server 2003 Small Business edition, and we have regular server reports to fill out, including checking backups, the firewall, etc. The main thing that is time consuming is going through the Event Log and pulling all errors. I'm looking for some software to help us shorten that time -- something that pulls all the errors from the Event log maybe. Something free is very, very much what we want, but we have a budget and can spend some on licensing if need be. Any suggestions?
  9. I'm new here, so I hope is the forum to post to. If not, point me in the right direction! Here's what I've got -- I've got a tech CD that's been put together for my job -- we do service on PC's and constantly find ourselves going to Windows Update, and got sick of it. So we combined all the updates into one batch file, and it works brilliantly except for one thing -- they all set a restore point. We have downloaded all the updates post-SP2, and have command line switches that force them to run silently and whatnot, but what we would really like is to disable the system restore they do as well, without turning off the system restore for the entire system. Is there a command line switch for the updates that does this? Or is it easier to have the system process a .reg file that disables system restore at the front end, then have the opposite at the end of the batch file? If system restore is disabled, will the manual windows updates still create a restore point? Any help is much appreciated. After running our update CD, we end up with 1.5gb of restore points -- a lot of wasted space! Thanks! --Nathan
