  1. Hello guys... I know that I can create hash rules and such for specific application but with so many torrent apps and even web based torrent downloading I find that creating a hash rule would be just a pebble in the ocean. Is it possible to block extensions? As the topic title shows, I want to block .torrent files on a remote network which doesnt have all the goodies that our main corporate network has to block illegal sites and such. Thanks for reading, ceez
  2. @crahak, is this the 2600 card you mentioned? If so, that's a PCI-e card, what recommendation for a PCI? @puntoMX, lol....well not quite the supermarket, but it's a DELL!!! Oh the inhumanity! I know- I know, I've built systems before but I was not looking for some power hungry system and it came with a sweet 19" lcd!!! If I am not mistaken it's a 2.4 with 2 gigs of RAM and yes, it does not have an agp or pci-e. But again, I didnt want a power system since I am not into PC games or such. I am not sure about movie playback (yet). What I am trying to do is connect the pc to my 42" tv via the HDMI port. I have a DVI to HDMI cable, and with my current nvidia (pci) I cannot get the 1920 resolution so I have to use the vid card keystone settings to 'squeeze' the image between the borders of the tv and it looks crappy and bothersome to the eye balls!!! Again, not sure about playback and not interested in playing pc games.
  3. liquidsage, thanks for your excellent advise on getting them painted...and yeah, i want them white..... that monokote products looks like an easy alternative, wrap the speakers in it and wallah! done. hopefully it's not easier said than done! thanks again for your input ceez
  4. hey guys thanks for your replies and sorry for my late reply, i was out on vacation and now back (**** it's hard to get back to work after vacation.) below is the specs of my tv in regards to pc resolution. as you can see my TV supports 1080p format and 1920x1080p resolution @ 60Hz So the card I was looking over at tigerdirect should be sufficient right?!?! thanks again, ceez
  5. hello fellow msfn-ers! I hooked up my HD tv to my computer but to get the best resolution I need a card that can output at least 1920x1080, the Digitial on my nvidia nvs 280 pci max out at 1600, yet the analog reaches up to 2560!!! I was checking out Tigerdirect and found the following card It has a max digital resolution of 2560x1600. This seems to me like it would work. I just wanted to know what do you guys use to achieve at least 1920 resolution and what can you recommend. Thank you very much for your help! ceez
  6. alright guys, update. I was able to finish the entire process and 'delete' both dc servers from the child domain. I've cleaned up the foward and reverse zones of any Host A records/PTR Records. On the root domain there's the following folders: root _msdcs domains <guid>folder _tcp Inside _tcp I have 2 _ldap entries with the names of the 2 servers. Will AD/DNS eventually clear this up or can I delete those two entries. Anything else that I should delete? Thanks again for reading through this troubling times! ceez
  7. hey guys an update... we performed a dcpromo with /forceremoval switch since the 2nd DC in this child domain could not contact DC1. We did it on both and noted that we needed to cleanup the metadata using ntdsutil. We followed the steps but once we get to step 5 we get an error, I am assuming it's because it's already a standalone server and no longer in the forrest: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. 2. At the command prompt, type ntdsutil, and then press ENTER. 3. Type metadata cleanup, and then press ENTER. Based on the options given, the administrator can perform the removal, but additional configuration parameters must be specified before the removal can occur. 4. Type connections and press ENTER. This menu is used to connect to the specific server where the changes occur. If the currently logged on user does not have administrative permissions, different credentials can be supplied by specifying the credentials to use before making the connection. To do this, type set creds DomainNameUserNamePassword, and then press ENTER. For a null password, type null for the password parameter. 5. Type connect to server servername, and then press ENTER. You should receive confirmation that the connection is successfully established. If an error occurs, verify that the domain controller being used in the connection is available and the credentials you supplied have administrative permissions on the server. In step five when I type "connect to server baosrv01" (or baosrv02) I get the following: "DsBindW error 0x6d9(There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.)" Again, I am assuming that's because it actually no longer exists. I think that all we need to do now is to cleanup DNS and exchange manager. In my reasoning I should delete all forward and reverse zones in dns for our root domain and other 3 child domains In exchange manager I should delete the Recipient Update Services that points to this child domain. any other ideas? I am in the learning process here and the person that was responsible for this stuff left the company (that sucks!) Thank you for your help, ceez
  8. hey guys, I have a sony sound system and I want to paint two of the satellite speakers white because I want them to blend in with the wall instead of 2 black "dots" suspended in mid air! The ones I have are similar to this guy that's selling over at ebay (NOTE I am not selling them, this is the closest image I could find to my speakers). Anyways, mine are black and need to paint them black, the surface is smooth plastic and I can just buy white grill cloth to cover the grill. I was thinking maybe some printer in spray paint form and then the white also in spray paint? Should I sand them? Any advice from your computer case modders would be appreciated Thanks alot everyone, Ceez
  9. @cluberti, hope you can help me out here...i am confused... we have changed the ips of the 2 dc's and the 1 file storage nas of this child domain to 10.201.1.217 , .218 & .219. This is now within the same range of our main office. I can ping between the 3 servers but the servers in the main office CANT ping these 3 servers, a ping command results in pinging the old .8 range: 10.201.8.x We enabled DNS on the 2 dc's and performed a flushdns & registerdns. I dont want to mess up any DNS eventhough this child domain is going out the door, yet I dont want to have any residual issues once we demote it. so here are a few q's Our DNS ptr records show that server1, server2 and NAS1 are still in the .8 range, shoud I fix those to reflect the new ips? (this is the only way that our main office servers/pc's would be able to see them) Should i delete the forward & reverse lookup zones for this child domain from our main office domain and any other child domains? thanks for your help, ceez
  10. so renable DNS but leave the .1 range which is our main office ip range because leaving it at .8 would be useless in the sense of communication, correct? Thanks again!
  11. @cluberti, yes we're an MS shop and AD integrated. Also, the servers are no longer in their original location since that office was closed and they now reside in an empty office in our main office. They were in a 10.201.8.x range while our corp office is in the 10.201.1.x range. Since we have not demoted both dc's we figured we should change the IP's on the 2 servers to a local 10.201.1.x ip. We successfully changed the ip's but whenever a computer within the .1 range or even ping within the 2 servers it still tries to ping the .8 range. We disabled DHCP and DNS. DHCP because we dont want the servers assigning .8 range address and people then not able to connect within the .1 network (whic happened to 2 users once we started the servers). And DNS, well just because there's no name resolutions going on. What steps would you suggest to demote them. I cant just connect them in their own atonomous network because during dcpromo it needs to talk to the other servers/child domains int the network, yet they have been off the network powered off for about 2 weeks now and I was thinking that it would be a good idea to have them update any records for a few days and THEN demote them. what would anyone suggest in this situation?!?!? thanks for your help, ceez
  12. hello everybody, we have a child domain that we're demoting, I have demoted a child domain once long time ago and dont remember if there's any additional steps. I know that we log in and run dcpromo and that should remove the child domain and any information. But what about DHCP and DNS? Is that something we need to delete first before running dc promo? There are no workstations using this child domain so there's no resolution, it's just 2 dc's and 1 nas which have static ip's so i assume I should not worry about it. thank you for the input, ceez
  13. thanks for your reply guys. so bottom line is, yes we use office 2007 so we might as well install .net BUT we can just worry about downloading ver3 plus any updates and not worry about going through the entire process, 1+update, 2+updates. thanks for the information! ceez
  14. hello fellow msfn-ers! I have a qeustion regarding the .net framework 1,2 & 3 and their corresponding sp's. Are they really needed lets say in an office environment that just runs office applications and CAD drafting software? Everytime we have a pc we download updates and of course those .net's come up, we just d/l and install them, but waiting for those large downloads to finish are a pain. I know we can use ghost to image our drives but we're in the process of updating those, so in the meanwhile is manual updates! Or can we just get .net3 with its sp and forget about 1 & 2? thanks everyone, ceez
  15. awesome, that's what I thought but just wanted to be 100000% sure! it worked like a charm! thank you sir!
  16. Hello msfn-ers! I have a question, we have two 33gig scsi drives that are mirroed with data. there are two options in disk management when I right click on either of the dynamic 33gig drives: Remove Mirror & Break Mirrored Volume What is the difference? I do not want to delete the data on EITHER of the drives, I just want to be able to detach the mirror and LATER wipe out the data from one of the mirrored drives. what's the best way to go about this? As always, thanks for your help, ceez
  17. Hello fellow msfn-ers! I just a q regarding a DC 2003 server. Whenever it's rebooted and gets to the ctrl-alt-del screen it can take anywhere from 10-15 mins fro the domain to 'initialize'. By that I mean that I cant log in as admin to the domain because it says that the domain is not available (Even though the server is up at this time) and neither can any workstation. is this a normal thing? thanks, ceez
  18. excellent explanation, thank you very much. I just tried it and it works perfectly! I tried it on my workstation which has that version and it does not run, if I modify the version number on my registry and try to run it again it will begin the setup. Yes, I will be adding the /q switch for a silent installation. Now I have the same thing to do with with Java 6.3... I should be able to follow the same concept thanks alot for your help! ceez
  19. @Yzowl, WOW how long did it take you to come up with that?!?! I am not at work so cant try it out but will tomorrow. could it be possible for you explain a little bit what each line does? I regards to the "delim" section you're saying that I should press the TAB key there and not just empty spaces? And where did you learn all this batch coding? Man thanks again, hope it works. ceez
  20. ok so far I can get DOS to output the version# with the following cmd: The output is the following: Now how can I make a line that says something like: If DisplayVersion not equal to 7.4.0.91 then install "c:\apps\QuickTime740Installer.exe" thanks again.
  21. Hello fellow msfn-ers! I have a task I am trying perform using good ol' batch file commands (i've yet to learn WMI scripting! ). What I want to do is for the script to check if the latest version of qtime is installed. In the registry the path is: The key: How can I have an IF / THEN / GOTO command (or any other) incorporated to check this key? I was thinking about trying an export but an export cant check the value of the key (can it?) Thanks for your help...in the meanwhile I continue my google search! ceez: thumbup
  22. where I work we dont have a punch system either, more a trust system but in case HR asks we have a program called UserLock which not only controls how many times a user can log into various computers in the network but also has reporting features like log off/on lock/unlock times. it's by a company called IS Decisions, www.isdecisions.com. It will cost you but dont know how much.
  23. wow I knew another great app like WUD would come out of an MSFN member! what a great simple little tool, I will look at the other ones too, but WUD seems super duper easy and friendly to use! thanks to all! ceez
  24. hello everyone, it's been a long time since I made my last unattended and have been out of the 'scene' and it's updates. I just want to know if there's an easy way in which I can use nlite or any other app to download all the updates that were made available after sp2. We use a dell oem sp2 CD at work and whenever we use it we need to download at least 91 updates to get it up to par. Is it possible? Thanks, ceez
  25. @radix, do I need to install AUTOIT on each workstation or do i just install on mine, pop in that code and save as what I assume could be a batch file. am I correct in this assumption? thanks ps- I just installed and dont quite get it....I opened the SciTE Script Editor and pasted the code, but when I save I dont know what extension to save as, the save as type field is just an empty drop down box. how do i do this?!?! :confused ps2- Ok so I found their documentation in their website and read the following. I followed the steps in creating a new script, pasted the code above that you provided and saved the file. now when I double click on the au3 file (uninstall.au3) I get the following AutoIT error: --------------------------- Looks like an interesting little app, I'll just need to do ALOT of reading! thanks again as I continue to tinker with it! ps3- LOL! Ok so I got rid of the error by puting the first two lines in your original quote into a single line: $sUninstall = 'C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\INSTAL~1\\engine\\6\\INTEL3~1\\ctor.dll,LaunchSetup ' & '"C:\\Program Files\\InstallShield Installation Information\\{35C30793-32F4-11D6-A043-00E081105A80}\\setup.exe" remove' It ran the script and it performed the correct "clicks". Now to figure out how to make it click on the [FINISH] button on the last window which confirms the uninstall process. Thanks again!
