  1. Phew- Thanks for that clarification, rhythmnsmoke ... Well if your software does what you say it does I suppose it's a far better approach than PG's. I didn't mean to start a one-on-one comparison between PG and ImmE either, though. But still I'd like to find similar software as yours that could keep the OS as safe as possible from getting infected with viruses, trojans, keyloggers and the like ... I myself am on a constant hunt for the best possible security solutions and as a side note I've sent an e-mail asking to beta-test your software to that contact e-mail at BBX' home page about 14 days ago but alas I didn't recieve any response ... Well - it's admirable that we can go on this long I think - so you're definately onto something here ... Regarding PG - did you read those links I've posted previously ? @^_^ - Have you tested PG as well now - if so, what do you think ... ? The best testing must be on as many different setups as possible - so that we get a real-life evaluation of the strenghts and weaknesses of the software. Lastly - keep up the spirit, everybody - it's good to keep this thread going ... B)
  2. Well, just for the sake of it - maybe you could've just uninstall-reinstall-ed that firefox That counts for any other program as well - just uninstall and reinstall - spares you a lot of time compared to reformatting and often solves some strange problems that might occur ...
  3. Regarding ProcessGuard I just found this link: http://www.commontology.de/andreas/win_secure_pg3.html That's a nice page regarding that program, so you might want to take a peep ... In addition to my previuos post about whether PG works in safe mode or not - it doesn't, so you're right, rhythmnsmoke ... I know now because i got a reply from a moderator on that Wilders Security Forum where I'd asked about that possibility ... So safe mode for PG is a no-go ...
  4. Alright ... I've now installed ProcessGuard on one of my desktops ... Will see how that goes. I can confirm it works in safe mode (only the gui seems disabled - but the process proc... is up and running) so it should block unauthorized modifications regardless ... but as it's an entirely new program I think it takes some learning ... @rhythmnsmoke - I think it's primarily targeted towards home users although there is a note that universities etc. can get volume discounts ... Heading off to bed now, though - will be back for more ...
  5. Hakeem - hate to say this, but ... Note that there are quite a few DVD-roms out there that just don't cut the ice - I've had issues with both Pioneer, Teac and Toshiba DVD-rom drives and finally settled for a good DVD-burner and a good CD-writer ... You might want to get a good cd-writer instead to complement you DVD burner - or go buy a second "backup" DVD burner ... Just so you don't get dissappointed as I did a few times
  6. You can add me to the Plextor camp as well - got a 12x DVD-burner and a 24x cd burner. None of which has ever failed on me. Also note the new plexwriters are a sleek distinguished design and very silent in operation (that's an optional setting) when you want to watch a movie a with great dynamic range so that you don't hear the whizz of the drive during the silent passages. The ripping to HDD also can't be beaten ... So I'd say: Plextor!
  7. Try getting your hands on something called ghost explorer or -viewer. I think that's what the handy utility is called. It's some program from Symantec to browse Ghost images, which those .GHO files are. If you have a Ghost installation cd at hand it should be available in some of the extras on the cd ... Hope you get along ... Greets Jacob.
  8. My problem is this: I own an old Office XP Pro cd in Danish. Then recently I studied at an institution where I got Office 2003 Pro - only the problem is they saved some money and only got us the english version Office 2003. Now my idea is: can I add the language files from the office xp pro into the office 2003 installation folders so it will automatically recognise that I have Danish language files installed for spelling etc. If so, how - it seems a bit stupid to install OXP first and then install O2k3 on top of that - there must be a way around that - not?
  9. @rhythmnsmoke - please take one more look at http://www.diamondcs.com.au ProcessGuard is not part of a "suite" as you state, it's a product that works on its own. The TDS-3 is only an anti-trojan program. So PG doesn't keep databases or definition updates. That's why I figured it works a bit like yours. I think it's a "learning" process so you can just allow friendly processes as a one-time job and then only new "unknown" processes trying to execute will require user intervention. Or if they change, e.g. qua Windows Update you will be required to grant them allowance again. Like I said I will try the demo to see how PG works ... Keep up the good spirit Greets Jacob
  10. @Martin Zugec - Well, it may be a hoax that M$ is to aquire Claria but a few articles indicate this BetaNews', for one: http://www.betanews.com/article/MS_Claria_...cern/1120148264 or News.com's: http://news.com.com/Microsoft+said+to+be+i....html?tag=st_lh and this is where I heard about the "downgrade" in security related to Claria's adware in M$ Antispyware: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/07/ms...aria_detection/ and http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,13793423 So ... I guess we'll see
  11. Depending on what application you're using to play back the file it could be some hardware or software acceleration setting that's not enabled or it could simply be a bad burn ... Have you tried burning it with another burning app. ? (when you've reinstalled - let us know ...)
  12. Rhythmnsmoke, it doesn't update any database - we're talking about the product named ProcessGuard, right? It's nowhere stated that it keeps or updates any database at all. Furthermore it doesn't scan as any traditional AV would - as I've understood it merely requires you to grant any driver or process denial or acceptance to run. That makes it about as good as your product except it doesn't "sweep" anything from your HDD. But I appreciate that you took your time to answer my question being "bombed" with replies of all sorts in this thread But I suppose I'd gain some knowledge of that PG program if I try the free demo from the DiamondCS website ... Speaking of which - you guys REALLY need to look into the potential customer aspect of the marketing process - yes - i know it's been said more than a few times in this thread - but if you've no chance whatsoever to try out the program - may that be as a locked demo or whatever - you don't see in your own environment if it would work as you desire. That makes that particular product fairly useless for the common user - and I suspect that, at some time, you people would want to enter that segment as well ... But I guess that's enough ranting on my part for now, hehe
  13. I just saw this program - now that made me wonder - how does that compare to yours, Rhytmnsmoke ... website: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/processguard/ PS: here's a thread discussing that very piece of software ... http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=54352
  14. I agree mostly with those here who say that MS Antispyware is good ... BUT: I read recently that there are rumours that MS is about to aquire Claria - former Gator - who are well known for their spyware cr*p!!! So - unfortunately - MS Anstispyware is as per recent changes not automatically quarantining Claria's spyware - that's a shame ... So I think although it's a decent piece of software one should at least have one other spyware remover or blocker ...
  15. @niteghost I rather agree with Zxian. XP Pro is a lot more "consumer friendly" if you're going to use it as a workstation for games, heavy graphics or video applications or sound editing programs - or just for plain surfing and writing documents etc. You may want to turn off XP's "bulky" look - loved by some and hated by a few others ... you can turn this off however in control panel->system->advanced->performance and set this to best performance instead of best visual ...
  16. I've had mixed experiences with ZA firewall Pro - it all depends on your software setup I think ie. what programs are installed on your computer and what OS. One time when I had installed Kaspersky personal antivirus and installed ZA I could hardly make my computer boot But at best it doesen't conflict with other things and then its a decent product. Why don't you try it on your system and see how it acts ... ?
  17. I'm currently using Kerio Personal firewall on one of my desktops, I like it a lot - it has now converted itself to it's free for personal use but not so advanced features mode. That happens after a 30-day trial mode. You can configure it to use advanced setting while installing it an so it will pop-up messages when some application tries to access the .net, depending on you to grant or deny that access. Simple setting will just act silently but still control what happens on application level. Quite nice - try it - that's my advice ... Regards Jacob
  18. Yeah - but someone trying to sell it that's just too stupid ...
  19. This is just ridculous, some guy trying to sell some tools you can find free on the .net - what do you guys think ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...7166790058&rd=1 Probably not illegal but still, ridiculous - not ?
  20. Try this: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n...001092114452606 That should get rid of the bugger Hope that helps ... Regards Jacob
  21. Or try DBPowerAmp - as I recall it can record while playing back the file, you can then burn or transform or whatever the recorded .wav file ...
  22. you should just download the whole file to you hdd first and then install from there - to do this you need to choose save - not open - in internet explorer when you click on the download link and then suggest somewhere where you know you can find the downloaded file again. Then when done downloading you want to run this installer. This is also good for later burning to cd or dvd. Hope this helps. Greets Jacob
  23. Maybe you people should look toward metaproducts' download express which is quite alright and free for personal use - and - most importantly - contains no spy- or adware. Quite a good download manager considering it's freeware ...
  24. Kaspersky personal Pro is the best for me. I tried many others but always returned to that even though it's a bit hungry on system resources. If there's a virus that other AV's couldn't remove I've often had great success with Kaspersky.
