Soulin, thx for your idea...that seemed to do the trick. My PATH variable was leading to a Roxio program that I have installed for some reason. I have no clue how or why it changed from its original contents, but when I corrected the PATH, my DOS commands and especially my IPCONFIG worked perfectly. Thx again for the advice, now i will try to learn what the PATH variable is and its purpose and try to figure out how it changed from one day to the next. Take care...Bill

Thx for the advice, guys...I have checked my System 32 folder and all DOS files are there as they should be (IPCONFIG, HELP, etc). Next I will try and check the PATH variable for %windir%\system32. I'll keep you advised on status as soon as I can get back to my computer at home. Forgive the delay in response as I have no internet access at home now and must communicate with you at work, then try your ideas when I get home. Thx again for your help. Bill

Thx for the help...I will check that out tomorrow; But should that also effect the other commands that don't seem to work also, such as HELP CHKDSK FIND, etc? I receive the same response with any DOS command I try to input. I will certainly check the system 32 folder as soon as I get home. Thx again. Bill

Turned computer off, came back a day later...no internet. ISP tech support tried to get IP address from CMD prompt, but nothing worked. Tried various DOS commands, including IPCONFIG HELP and DIR. Only DIR returned a valid response; everything else returned "Command is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file". ISP tech support unable to help because they said problem was computer related, nothing to do with ISP. Any ideas as to what happened? or what to do to make IPCONFIG respond so I can have internet service again? I am running Win 2000 latest SP AMD athlon 2200XP w/ 512RAM Thx....Bill
