  1. i know this is probably a totally simple newbie post and i apologize ahead of time. my server has a C: and then another disk separate that is partitioned into 6 other drives that get mapped to all my users. when a user deletes something from any of those drives it doesn't go into their recycle bin or the one on the server i just have always gone to my backup tapes to retrieve information. is there a place i should be seeing these? thanks for the rookie help!
  2. thanks for the feedback. i currently have VPN working. i can access and work from outside the office fairly efficent but not like i'd like. problem is opening big stuff and working quick. if i have the time and using AutoCAD for instance i take the time to download the files then work localy, then upload them back to the server once done. this would basically be doing the oposite of what Citrix tries to implement. it just seems that working through Citrix to access everything "remotely" would be much more effecient than VPN, but the intence graphic side of it is what scares me. just allot of money to get and try out to have it work poorly. as for testing what would be the best way to tes this? take an old box that has decent RAM/Processor speed and put server 2003 on it, Citrix software for 1 user and try that? other than VPN and Citrix are there any other solutions out there? i appreciate the thoughts guys/gals!
  3. I’m currently trying to find a better solution for accessing the network from outside the domain. I would like to act with the domain as if I were their locally. I use AutoCAD, Photoshop, 3D Viz, SketchUp, In-Design type files, so large for the most part. I currently have VPN setup and it will do with some patients of course. the thought as of now is to build another server "Citrix Server" set it up with all the necessary apps and use it to gain access outside the office (no matter where the location may be). The central location will have 2 T1's with a total of 40 +/- users. Then obviously high speed access from outside the "domain". Will this solution give me speeds as if I were inside the domain locally? I know Autodesk "doesn't support citrix metaframe" but have heard of people working with it. My biggest concern is the file size/speed. Thanks for any input.
  4. if i right click one of my drives on the server or any XP machine the properties come back like so this drive is mapped through the server as drive P, the local drive on the server itself is E. XP machine used space 633 GB free space 50.5 GB Server (same) used space 633 GB free space 50.5 GB If i go to the local drive on the server which is E i get the same results. but if i go into the E drive on the server there are 2 folders 1, projects which is shared as the P: drive. the other restore which is empty. if i go inside the sharded folder and select everything and get the properties i get back the size as 564 GB. i can't find where the other 70 gigs is being used on the drive. are there any settings that would be set on the drive or folder that would be using this space but not showing me? if i check it through file server manager i get the same as above 683 capacity, 50.5 free space. thanks JC after further investigation i think i've found my answer. shadow copies. now i just need to readup on that. sorry for the early post should have looked further first. any heads up maybe that i should know about or look out for? thanks
  5. I have a HP color LaserJet here at the office that was working epic as long as I can remember. Today printed to it myself many of times then out of no where it stopped working for everyone. No errors on the machine and only error I can get is on a test page or sending a print and in the queue I get “error printing”. It’s plugged into a network and 6 other printers mapped the same way and even some on the same switch are working fine. I’ve dumped it off the server then added it back. also I just used the same port that was previously configured and same IP. i've also turned it off and unplugged for 30 minutes. rebooted the server twice, once inbetween the reinstallation of the printer. it's late sorry if i've forgotten to mention anything obvious, just need ideas of where to go from here. Ideas???? thanks, JC nevermind, long night i just got it....IP address, duh
  6. i have roughly 40 people setup on my domain server which has windows server 2003. when i'm setting up new machines for the users i have to log in as them in order to setup certain software settings. usually i have to ask for there password or change it myself manualy on the server but this is becoming a pain at times. it there somewhere in server 2003 that will show me what everyone's log on passwords are? thanks JC
  7. i'm having a problem with my login script in server 2003 what happens if i log in sometimes the drives that get mapped show up as "Network Drive (P:)" where the name should be "Projects on myserver". it doesn't do this all the time but enough to where it does get anoying. attached is my script file any ideas? is it even my script file? thanks JC multidrivemap.txt
  8. thanks for your replies guys, i appreciate it. JC
  9. i'm a nebie in the IT relm and server 2003 as well. i have a class set up to learn more about 2003 stuff but wanted to ask some questions in the meantime. i'm just curious on the major things i need to keep up on my server making sure it is running it's best. one thing i'd like to know as well is if there is some type of admin program that will show me how it is running currently and show me how it's performing. basically just any feedback on things to do daily, weekly, and even monthly. tasks i should remind myself to do on a regular basis. another thing i'd like to have is something that will let me keep track of my network, like what websites people are going to (i'm sure this is only done in the firewall tho), and applications that they could be running, without having to actually go to there machine through remote entry or such. anything like that out there? thanks for any and all feedback JC
