  2. Aaron, there's only one thing in the $OEM$ folders, and that is a file called CMDLINES.BAK. If you wish, I could send that to you, for the only other thing in the folder is Drivers, which is empty. -Nemosta
  3. Greetings, I got a new computer yesterday and have decided to try this out, but my very first problem is quite possibly the most beginner-like. My computer vendor was Dell, and the files I noticed in C: straight away were "DELL", "DRIVERS", and "I386". Apparently I386 has some Accessories programs, and several icons/cursor management. It also, if it matters, has $OEM and $1, but the only thing beyond that is Drivers. Will it affect my system, in any way, if I were to place Windows XP's CD folders and then just rename it? I realise most likely not, as it's a different directory from where the programs run, but I want to be sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Nemosta It it would help, the folder is around 869Mg (912,035,840 bytes, to be exact).
  4. Thanks Drew. Now that I know it's a problem that's occurred on other systems I can worry less. If it randomly went off, I guess I'll just have to see what happens. -Nemosta
  5. If this is in the wrong forum, I apologise as this is XP related and I couldn't find a Hardware Problems forum. 2 days ago. Intalled CloneCD for a specific backup task, but had trouble burning so I started up 1 Virtual Drive. I used this function before I formatted my computer and it didn't have any problems, now my operating system has gone very buggy. All icons are mismatched, and although the CD drive reads the data I place it takes a while and seems to struggle. I'll demonstrate and make clear what happened with images. In the first image, the drive with the blurred text (Blurred for personal reasons, so let's just call it "Dot") is my CD drive. Dot was the name of the CD I placed in when activating the Virtual Drive. Once restarting, the default name of my CD drive (DVD/CD) permanently became Dot and the icon changed into the "Unknown filetype" icon. Even deactivating the Virtual Drive didn't help, nor did deleting CloneCD. The second image, you can tell that the Virtual Drive has tinkered with the Adobe Photoshop icon, as they're all changed to some random image. I wasn't wanting to reformat my hard drive because of this problem, but if it is the only solution I'll have to consider it. Just to make things simpler for you, let me give my specs: CloneCD version: 4.2.0.2 CD Drive: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2102 Windows Version: XP Professional. One more thing I forgot to add, after restarting once activating the Virtual Drive it didn't become active, just all the icons changed and the drive began struggling. If you could help, I would be very grateful. -Nemosta
  6. I don't recall much, but I do remember an issue quite a long time ago regarding Service Pack 1 for Windows XP and some vulnerability, allowing someone to delete any directory on the system. I've seen a lot of patches and hot-fixes in Help and Support, and have decided not to download them because people say they cause more problems than they solve. I agree with this, since my laptop went to a black screen when been awaken from Hibernation or Standby shortly after a patch was downloaded. Yet I'm concerned if I'm keeping my computer from problems or simply allowing it to be a more unsecure operating system, and if someone could clear this up for me I thank you in advance. -Nemosta
  7. I realise I can simply download Windows XP off a P2P share network, but I was hoping it wouldn't have to come to that for two reasons: 1. I'm on 56k. My maximum downstream speed is 7.6kb, quite fast for dial-up but still pathetic when compared to cable or ADSL. 2. Several large files on programs such as Kazaa Lite or WinMX can be fake, and I don't think the "Find Alternates" for MX helps much either. So I could end up downloading some file just masked as XP. I can't get the cd from a friend, because apparently it locks onto the specifications and computer when first run so it can't work with any other system. That's at least what I assume, since it must be heavily protected. But, if the recovery is of no use then I guess I'll have to use the P2P software. Thanks for the help AaronXP, Terminator3. -Nemosta
  8. For those of you who are currently using the "Longhorn E L I T E" or "Longhorn Alpha" themes for Aston, could you possibly give me some information on how stable they are? I would like a shell that basically has the feel and look of Windows Longhorn, but could something only around 500kb achieve this? Meh, I'm not familiar with shell themes since I haven't used them before so if those sizes are normal than nevermind my last comment. I realise several of my posts lately have been regarding help or issues, and for that I apologise if it is any annoyance due to these posts being repeated. -Nemosta
  9. AaronXP, this would indeed be interesting to test out when I reformat, but there is a certain problem: I don't have the actual Windows XP CD. I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 laptop, so I have piled on two discs Recovery and Windows XP (four discs if you count the "backup"). Windows XP seems to be on both discs seperated or something similair, because during the Toshiba installation at about 35% it asks for disc 2. This probably creates a problem for me. I have no idea as to if I place both discs on my hard drive, examine and start from there, or if all of Windows XP is on the second disc since a small portion of the installation is Toshiba files. Another problem is I feel unsafe running these discs on my operating system, as I have to activate them by pressing a key combination, which makes it begin automatically. Help would be appreciated. -Nemosta
  10. If I want to create a topic related to MSFN, where's the forum? So far the best relation I've seen is Web Developing, but I'm not sure if that's the right forum either. Help would be appreciated. -Nemosta
  11. I'll stick with Intel. Reading several messages here, I was interested in Anthlon but then when I noticed people discussing a heating problem the interest vanished. So, yes, Intel P4.
  12. This is Movie related so I thought I'd post here. Does anyone in the forums know of a website that offers reviews for movies? I rent one DVD at least once a week and there have been some instances where it turned out to be terrible. Any links or help would be appreciated. -Nemosta
  13. Name's Nemosta, actually Jose but call me what you prefer. Live in Australia and happened to hear about your site from a friend. Nice graphic interface, interesting news, and intriguing forums. Keep it up. MSFN - Where People Go To Know Catchy. -Nemosta
