  1. Let's just CALM DOWN here. I admitted making a mistake alright? And if it wasn't clear, you can quote me: I KNOW I SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS, but after years of using nLite with good results I did not think I could encounter a problem or something unexpected like this. My question was however how can I amend this and are there any more changes made to the system which I am not aware of. Thank you very much again!
  2. Hello First of all, a big thank you for Nuhi for all his great efforts. But, unfortunately I have a problem. I used nLite v1.4.1 on an English WinXP Pro SP1 Volume License CD to do the following: 1. Slipstream SP2 2. Integrate IE7 3. Components Removed: MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger, Windows Tour, Search Assistant and Desktop Cleanup Wizard 4. Unattended Settings (serial number, language selection etc. Nothing removed and no tweaks or hacks selected) 5. Options: Everything set to default. 6. Tweaks: Various settings. 7. Disabled Services: Telnet, Remote Registry and Messenger This is the ini file I used to create this CD: [Main] Env = 1.4.1 - 2.0.50727.1433.Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Target = Windows XP Professional SP2 - 5.1.2600.2180 - English (United States) [Tasks] Service Pack Integration Remove Components Unattended Setup Integrate Drivers Hotfixes and Update Packs Tweaks Create a Bootable ISO Options [Components] ;# Network # MSN Explorer Windows Messenger ;# Operating System Options # Desktop Cleanup Wizard Search Assistant Tour ;# Compatibility # [KeepFiles] msconfig.exe [RemoveFiles] clock.avi yahoo.bmp swtchbrd.bmp [Options] ProfilesDir = "%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings" TargetPath = "WINDOWS" temp_dir = %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp AdvTweaks [Patches] [Services2] TlntSvr,4 RemoteRegistry,4 Messenger,4 [Tweaks] Boot and Shutdown-Logon Page-Classic Desktop-Internet Explorer icon-Show Desktop-My Computer icon-Show Desktop-My Documents icon-Show Desktop-My Network Places icon-Show Desktop-Recycle Bin icon-Show Explorer-Advanced Search: preconfigure options Explorer-Change Windows Explorer folder view-List Explorer-Classic Control Panel Explorer-Disable Prefix: Shortcut to Explorer-Display the contents of system folders Explorer-Show the full path in the Address Bar Internet Explorer-Disable Market Place bookmark Internet Explorer-Disable Media Player 6.4 created bookmarks Internet Explorer-Set Homepage-www.google.com Internet Explorer-Set IE-Cache limit to-200 MB Network-Disable Simple File Sharing Start Menu-Control Panel-Display as a menu Start Menu-Disable and remove Documents list from the Start Menu Start Menu-Do not use Personalized Menus Start Menu-My Computer-Display as a link Start Menu-My Documents-Display as a link Start Menu-My Music-Don't display this item Start Menu-My Network Places-Display as a link Start Menu-My Pictures-Don't display this item Start Menu-Network Connections-Don't display this item Start Menu-Remove Search For People from Search Start Menu-Remove Search the Internet from Search Start Menu-Remove Set Program Access and Defaults Start Menu-Remove Windows Catalog shortcut Taskbar-Disable Group similar Taskbar buttons Taskbar-Disable Hide inactive icons Taskbar-Lock the Taskbar-Yes Windows Media Player-Disable automatic codec download Windows Media Player-Disable silent acqusition Windows Media Player-Disable starting with Media Guide [Unattended] ComputerType = Default CustomLocales MaximumDataStorePercentOfDisk = 12 RestorePointLife = 30 DefaultThemesOff DefaultStartPanelOff DesktopTheme = Windows Classic|Windows Classic style|Normal AutoUDay = 5 AutoUHour = 15 ProgFilesPath = "\Program Files" [NetAdapter1] connname = "" macaddress = "" ipaddress = "192.168.0.1" subnetmask = "255.255.255.0" defaultgateway = "" dnsserver1 = "" dnsserver2 = "" winsserver = "" netbiossetting = "0" ipxnetworknumber = "00000000" ipxnetworkframetype = "0xFF" [NetAdapter2] connname = "" macaddress = "" ipaddress = "192.168.0.2" subnetmask = "255.255.255.0" defaultgateway = "" dnsserver1 = "" dnsserver2 = "" winsserver = "" netbiossetting = "0" ipxnetworknumber = "00000000" ipxnetworkframetype = "0xFF" [NetAdapter3] connname = "" macaddress = "" ipaddress = "192.168.0.3" subnetmask = "255.255.255.0" defaultgateway = "" dnsserver1 = "" dnsserver2 = "" winsserver = "" netbiossetting = "0" ipxnetworknumber = "00000000" ipxnetworkframetype = "0xFF" [NetAdapter4] connname = "" macaddress = "" ipaddress = "192.168.0.4" subnetmask = "255.255.255.0" defaultgateway = "" dnsserver1 = "" dnsserver2 = "" winsserver = "" netbiossetting = "0" ipxnetworknumber = "00000000" ipxnetworkframetype = "0xFF" [NetAdapter5] connname = "" macaddress = "" ipaddress = "192.168.0.5" subnetmask = "255.255.255.0" defaultgateway = "" dnsserver1 = "" dnsserver2 = "" winsserver = "" netbiossetting = "0" ipxnetworknumber = "00000000" ipxnetworkframetype = "0xFF" [GuiRunOnce] [Drivers] [Hotfixes] C:\Local Work\WinXP\IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe I used this CD on several different machines. The strange thing is that on some machines Windows asks for the installation CD every time a device driver is installed, and on some it doesn't. I am working in a production environment and I need to provide answers to my superiors. They, and I too, are worried that other components and other critical or non-critical parts of Windows might be changed or even missing. Why is there a prompt to insert a Windows CD every time a driver is installed and why does it happen on some of the machines installed with this CD and not all? How can I be sure that these machines are running a version of Windows without (other) changes I do not know about? I understand that this program is provided for free and with no warranty, but I have to know what else may be changed or missing. I put my trust and my word on nLite and brought it to a production environment which my job depends on. I need to be able to tell my superiors that nothing else is changed or missing and that the workstations running this version of Windows (the one from this CD) are perfectly safe from defects and other "surprises" (i.e. changes I did not make). Thank you very much in advance!
  3. Hey everyone Got myself a nice Zalman 8700 LED yesterday after reading a lot of reviews and considering other models / solutions. I have to say, the reviews aren't over enthusiastic and do not portray this cooler as an absolute leader over its competitors. But I had some great experience with Zalman's products in the past so I decided it's worth the shot. I just finished installing the cooler and a few minutes ago closed my PC. I immediately ran the same stress test I ran with the previous cooler (Everest Ultimate Edition 4), and the results are simply put - incredible: Core2Duo 2.33GHz Overclocked to 2.975GHz (7x425MHz@1.2V/1.3V): Idle=29-31 Load (100%)=39-40 As you can see, this is an AMAZING result! Idle temp has gone 10 degrees down and load has gone 21 degrees down !!! Now I have to admit that when I disassembled the GlacialTech cooler I noticed that the thermal grease was only spread on half of the CPU, but thermal grease helps cool an extra +/- 5 degrees, so this is still an absolutely huge improvement. At 75$ this thing didn't come cheap (costs like half of my CPU), but I swear it was worth every penny!
  4. I haven't tried it. I'm using Lavalys Everest Ultimate Edition to stress test the CPU. I guess it's not a good indication of data integrity though. Using Prime is a great idea, but first I need to lower my temps drastically. I doubt it! Actually, it does look better then the GlacialTech, but I don't like the idea that it doesn't have a back plate to hold the fan in the back of the motherboard. It is quite heavy and I don't like the thought of all this weight falling on the board. I decided I'll go for a Zalman 8700 probably. It's quite expensive, but I think i won't have a choice - the inside of my PC is quite crowded. I've got 4 hard drives, a passively cooled display card and two more PCI cards... Plus I want to overclock, and this fan cools all the components as well as the CPU (allegedly ). Thank you all.
  5. Thank you! But, what worries you about the second set of temps? The load temp is the same - I don't understand... Also, on the CPU's spec page it says max temp = 72 (sounds too high to me too, but that's what Intel says...). Is the fan I have not good in your opinion? It seems quite efficient, but I may be wrong. BTW - I had to raise the VCore in one notch - that's what caused the idle temp to raise so much. At stock vcore the system wasn't stable enough (it wouldn't wake after sleep), even at 400x7. Thanks again.
  6. Hi everyone I bought a new (and fast!) system about two weeks ago. CPU=Core 2 Duo E6550 CPU Cooler=GlacialTech Igloo 5073 Silent 1700RPM Max. (nice and cheap 92mm fan ) MB=Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R RAM=2x1GB Kingston DDR2-800MHz CL5 GPU=Gigabyte GeForce 8400GS CPU temperatures: Stock 2.33GHz: Idle=29 degrees Load (100%)=59-60 Overclocked 2.975GHz(7x425MHz@1.2V/1.3V): Idle=39-41 Load (100%)=60-61 I'm particularly worried about the load temperatures. Are they not too high? And what about idle @ 40 - is that OK? Can my CPU live a long and joyful life at these temperatures? Thanks a lot, Gant.
  7. But your pack contains IE7 updates as well... So, how does that work? I would assume your pack detects which version of IE is installed and installs the appropriate updates. So IF that's true (which you say it isn't), then IE7 must be installed before your pack So how does it really work? This is something I've been trying to figure out for a long time and I'd really like to understand how it works. Thanks a lot!
  8. Thanks for your reply, and I will use this opportunity to thank you too for your wonderful work! It is really amazing! So then, why does nLite offer the option of setting the order manually if it knows how to do it by itself? Also, my logic says that IE7 should be integrated first because your Post SP2 Update Pack contains IE7 updates... Where am I wrong? Thanks.
  9. I've just finished installing the nLited WinXP mentioned above and it seems that everything has been correctly integrated So could it be that nLite automatically knows the correct order of integration? Thanks again.
  10. Dear Nuhi Every time I start a topic here I have to thank you again for making nLite and keeping working so hard to keep it up to date! So thank you so much again! And again I have a small problem with the last two versions (1.3.0.4 & 1.3.5): Both of them do not follow the order of installation I set in the Hotfixes and Updates section. For instance, I'm trying to integrate (for WinXP Pro) IE7, RyanVM's RVMUpdatePack2.1.9, RVMAddonsWMP10_3.0, RVMAddonsDX9_1.3 and RVM_MU_Addon_1.1. I'm trying to set them in the following order: 1. IE7 2. WMP10 3. DX9 4. Microsoft Update (RVM_MU_Addon_1.1) 5. Post SP2 Update Package (RVMUpdatePack2.1.9) However, nLite integrates at the wrong order. It starts first with the Post SP2 Update Package, then goes to IE7, moves to WMP10 and so on. The order seems to be random. Can this be a bug with nLite? I've used older versions of nLite and RyanVM's packages in the past and I didn't encounter such a problem. I realize RyanVM is a third party in this case and that you cannot guarantee that his packages will work with your program, but I'm just wondering if there something you could do about this. Thanks very much.
  11. If you're not using an iPod, removing the startup entry iTuneshelper.exe and disabling the iPodservice service greatly improves iTunes' stability and performance. This also improves the general stability and performance of the entire computer and is therefor highly recommended (again, if not using an iPod). To disable iTuneshelper.exe from starting up: WinXP: Run -> type msconfig -> go to "startup" and untick iTuneshelper.exe-> Restart the computer to apply the change. After logging on, an annoying window will appear. Tick the checkbox and press OK. Win2000: Run -> type regedit -> go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \Run and delete the iTuneshelper.exe entry -> Restart the computer to apply the change. To disable iPodservice (same method for both XP and 2000): Run -> type services.msc -> locate iPodservice -> right click and choose "Properties" -> press "Stop" -> choose "Disabled" -> press OK. Restarting is not required.
  12. Download any of these BricoPacks. These are stand alone programs that change the look of your XP and are totally uninstallable - they don't screw anything up in your system whatsoever. I like Vista Inspirat best. Be sure to untick the annoying "Object Dock" app in the installer (unless you like it. Can be uninstalled later). Leave everything else ticked for best experience. Also, after you've installed and restarted you'll notice a few new taskbar icons have been added. One of them is called Ubericon. Be sure to change its setting from iBounce to the much nicer iZoom. Stupid, but fun
  13. Trend Micro rules! Best Anti-Malware I've ever seen. Includes every kind of protection known to man and not too heavy on resources at all. I would recommend NOT using any Zone Labs security products - the Anti-Virus / Anti-Spyware engines miss many viruses and the software generally screws up your system! Norton is THE worst Anti-Virus out there. I used the Server Edition with 50 PC's at work for a full year and by the end of the year I discovered that MOST of our PC's were infected by viruses Norton could not remove! The server program became paralyzed and we were all in total panic. We purchased Trend Micro's Office Scan (their own server / client solution) and it eradicated EVERYTHING !!! AVG is about the WORST Anti-Virus ever - hardly detects any virus at all, and even when it does it fails to remove it. Avast is great, but Trend Micro PC-cillin detects many more viruses. Use Avast if you don't want to pay a Cent (but be aware of the consequences... ). PC-cillin is the best security suite out there! Costs 25$ and you can use it on three computers!
  14. As a rule of thumb - I would put DX before the Post SP2 Pack, as it is a component of Windows and there have surely been updates for it. Also, some updates depend on its existence (although in such case this isn't critical). The same goes with IE7 (and that's why I told you to put it too before the Post SP2 Pack), only in that case I know for sure there are at least two updates for IE7 contained in the Pack. So the rule is "Think Logically": "Has the component I'm adding been updated (hint: Check RyanVM's list at his website, that's what it's there for...) since it was released?" Regards, Gantlett.
  15. mitsukai - nLite is definitely wise, thank you very much. The problem is that not all MS Updates have dates embedded within them and some updates use different date formatting then others. This is why the use of RyanVM's update packs is the best solution rather then using the actual MS Updates. Mr Reorg - I guess that answers your question Birds - This would not be a good idea since the Post SP2 Update Pack has an IE7 update inside. This is why I suggested the order I suggested. Believe me, I did this many times.
  16. Errr - I know that! But where? I looked all over! I really really did! And I still can't find the answer... It's been three days now Thanks.
  17. Hello everyone I'm using Windows Server 2003 and would like to force all my users (XP Pro) to be logged off after logon hours expire. The problem is that after logon hours have expired, logged on users remain logged on. They will not be logged off automatically by the system, instead they'll be denied log on only if they log off or try to log on after logon hours. Does anyone know how I can force the users to log off automatically after logon hours have expired? Thanks a lot, Gantlett.
  18. The order definitely matters. In your setup, however, it is not critical. I would put the Post SP2 Update Pack last just to be sure. Just try it and test it using Microsoft's Virtual PC 2004. It's very powerful and it's free.
  19. Wow! Setup Studio seems amazing! Vista's setup is definitely what XP's setup should have been. And there's no technological breakthrough here, just plain fear of the big Apple. This just shows you what good competition can bring us users. Thanks for the tip about Setup Studio. And colinbate - thank you too for mentioning the DriverPack. I should have thought about it last week when I had this annoying ASUS board who's drivers wouldn't integrate using nLite...
  20. Hi everyone As you all might know, Windows XP has the dumbest setup program in the world, especially when it comes to installing third party disk drivers. We all know that the stupid thing will only accept floppy disks as the location for drivers and nothing else. Is there an alternate setup wizard that makes installing Windows much easier and more flexible? I know nLite very well and have learned to master it, but sometimes certain drivers will not integrate successfully and the only choice is to use a floppy drive during setup to add the drivers. But sometimes a floppy drive is unavailable, or in other situations the only diskette available is damaged... Anyways... Is there a smarter 3rd party setup available for Windows XP? Thanks, Gantlett.
  21. OK After reading for several hours on the internet and mainly doing a WinXP installation test, I came to the conclusion that the MUI pack should be installed to a clean SP2 (preferably SP1 in the Hebrew case because it hasn't been updated since SP1). Ideally, it's best to run Windows Update after that, go to sleep, and wake up after all the updates have been downloaded and installed. This sucks. I've also found this page which explains how to automate the installation of MUI during or after installation, but not how to integrate it. It appears that installing MUI onto an already fully updated SP2 XP screws things up... Is there a way to integrate MUI into the XPCD just like WMP, IE7 and other WinXP features can be? Also, is it safe to use AutoPatcher instead of using Windows Update? Thanks everyone...
  22. Thanks for the tip, but I have a feeling the problem lies deeper. Could anyone else help me with this? I'll reinstall everything if I know it'll work! What if I create an nLite CD with no updates at all (except for IE7 ), install the MUI and then update it with AutoPatcher? Could that solve the problem? Thanks again, Gant.
  23. Hi everyone I have created an nLite WinXP Pro Corporate edition CD and it works beautifully, except for one problem: After installing Hebrew MUI, Hebrew, in some programs, is displayed as total gibberish (question marks). The source CD was WinXP Pro Corp. SP1. I used nLite to integrate the following updates: -SP2-ENG -RyanVM's Post-SP2 Update Pack v2.1.5a -RyanVM's DirectX 9.0c Addon v1.1 -RyanVM's WGA Addon v1.5.723.1 -RyanVM's WMP10 Addon v3.0 -Internet Explorer 7 ENG In the menus, in some places, Hebrew is displayed correctly, in some it is displayed as gibberish, and in other places the languaege is English instead of Hebrew. For example, WinRAR in Hebrew displays all the Hebrew text as question marks. Now I know how WinXP Pro in Hebrew should look like - I have a localized version of WinXP Pro installed on another computer and everything is perfectly fine there. I have also tried copying the entire fonts folder from the localized computer to the nLite computer but it didn't do anything at all (for good or worse...). Have the MUI CD's changed at all since the last five years? Because the MUI CD I have is about that age, but I've used it in many computers (not with nLite) and I haven't encountered any problems like these at all. I guess that if there have been changes/updates, MS would update the MUI files through MS Update, wouldn't they? Any help will be greatly appreciated - I don't want to reinstall the computer, really... Thanks a lot, Gant.
  24. OK - All I did was delete the WINNT.SIF file from the ISO, burned it onto a disc, and it worked! Setup had no trouble reading the files from the diskette and everything just went smoothly. Thank you very much - I really appreciate it! Gant.
  25. Thanks a lot for your help, both of you! Nuhi, I thought too that the problem might be because I was using the Unattended setup, but now I'm sure. Speeddymon, I tried to take a look at the driver's txtsetup.sif for example, but after realizing I can't understand anything in it I gave up on trying to manipulate any file I don't absolutely understand. I will try your method if Nuhi's doesn't work. I will try this tonight and report back. Thanks again, Gantlett.
