  1. True, you all have valid points but after my install is complete and ready to go, I can go to the drive properties, uncheck the 'Allow' checkbox and the system goes through it's process of clearing out the database of indexed files. This 'service' does affect performance. I run a P4 3.0Ghz system with 1GB of ram bla bla bla and I used to have to wait upwards of 25 seconds for a dialog box to open up because the so-called 'fast file search' utility was doing it's thing. Leaving that option checked still takes up room on your hard drive. Why should I be content to let that file grow and grow? It really doesn't do what MS tries to 'sell' it as. I'm in full agreeance with Simon....I want my install to be perfect and right now it's not. The less I have to do after an install the better. Also, the Index_service = Off option in winnt.sif does work on XP, but again it only disables the service. I even went so far as to purchase an XP registry book hoping to find something in there. I'd have better luck if I was playing the lottery 5 times a day.
  2. @ Simonsays I've used nlite to remove the service from the management console but like you, it still doesn't uncheck the option on drive properties. I really don't want to write MS because it takes 5 emails to actually get your question answered and that's about as annoying as it gets.
  3. LOL Actually, I'm from northern NJ. 15 miles due west of NYC. So I don't think the term "flatlander" pertains to me.
  4. Whoops.... Key=HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
  5. REG ADD %KEY%\040 /VE /D "Microsoft Anti-Spyware" /f REG ADD %KEY%\040 /V 1 /D "%PP%\MSAnti-Installer.exe" /f REG ADD %KEY%\040 /V 2 /D "\"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe\" /regserver" /f This code works for me using the 2nd version of mek's installer.
  6. Whoops, sorry.... but I have been building my uA on a cd-rw so recreating it is no problem. I haven't graduated to using VMware or anything sofisticated yet. Still very much learning the basics.
  7. I actually am using it, and with following along on the thread, I got it to work. The only thing wrong is that it leaves a shortcut to the program on the desktop and it doesn't need to be there.
  8. Fair enough, but it came off as being a little arrogant.
  9. @Mekrel...No Offense??? Well excuse me for asking a question, big guy.... Apparently these forums aren't for asking questions, maybe even "stupid to those who have done more than 1 uA cd".
  10. Thank you much Un4.... I figured as much, but just wanted to make sure.
  11. Thanks Mekrel Is it safe to assume that "cleanup.cmd" should reside in the $oem$ folder on the cd?
  12. Is there a switch for MSAS that will not put a shortcut on the desktop after installation?
  13. I'm not askingr HOW to remove OE. I'm using nLite. I'm asking IF I remove it, will there be a problem installing Outlook 2003???
  14. Hey Ya'll, I've been working on an uA cd. I have used some tweaks from the site. One thing I'm having some trouble with is the Disabling Index Service. True this disables the SERVICE (under the mmc) but does not disable (or remove the checkmark) from the option on the drive properties window. (right click on local disk; left click properties.... Allow indexing service for fast file search) How is this done? I cannot locate the correct key to modify. I've even tried taking snapshots of the reg before and after I disable this manually and to be honest I haven't been able to find a worthy registry comparison tool to locate what has changed.
  15. I want to incorporate Outlook 2003 into my uA and am curious if I can remove Outlook Express entirely from the cd without any recourse. SCVic - Columbia SC
  16. Flatlander, huh.... lol I'm actually a transplanted yankee.... from Jersey. The worst kind. So, you're saying as a human being he was a good person, but as a politician he defined the word? This really isn't the forum for political and moral conversations. Actually didn't expect it start something. I certainly have more opinion on this subject but will hold my tongue. Nice to meet ya, DL. This site is certainly huge. I've only got one friend in IT that would appreciate it and he really can't use it because on the W2K3 network he administers, he pushes Win98 desktops, where needed, via Citrix. By the way, have any connections in the Columbia area? I'm a A+, Net+ certified tech currently studying for MCP (XP), on a MCSA track. Hey, I gotta ask. Take care DL. Vic
  17. I'm not sure if you were joking, but my name is NOTThurmond. That's an insult to me. Strom Thurmond was the oldest member of the U.S. Congress who, back in the 50's ran under a segregationist, yet he fathered a mixed racial child who is in her mid 70's now.
  18. Home of the world's largest hypocrite.... Strom Thurmond! Ha ha One of a few number of places you can use your heat AND a/c in the same day. Anyway.......I found this site a few months back but didn't really have the time or the patience to really delve too much into it, until last week (3rd week of Feb '05) when I had time to sit down and build my first unattended cd. I really have no idea what I'm doing but the forums are HUGE in my success. Can we amend that old adage "Behind every good man is a great woman" ---> "Behind every successful unattended cd is MSFN!" Still working the bugs out as far as getting MSAntispyware to install from the uA, but other than that it's perfect. Looking forward to learning all that I can from this site. SCVic - Columbia, SC
