[HOWTO: Windows Vista x86 and x64 in the same DVD]

I've used the guide in Vista and worked flawlessly trying it Windows 7 and I'm getting error during install.

I'll be using my x64 and x86 RTM , you can use the ones you have (retail, etc.), the procedure is the same.

1. Please download and install the Windows7 Automated Installation Kit (AIK).
2. Please create a working folder:
c:\Windows7AIO\Distribution\
and two more folders in it x86 and x64
3. Now, copy all the contents of your x86 DVD to the distribuition folder, in c:\Windows7AIO\Distribution\
4. Move the file named install.wim from c:\Windows7AIO\Distribution\Sources to c:\Windows7AIO\Distriburion\x86

Delite all *.clg files from source folder!! And ei.cfg!!

5. Copy the file named install.wim from the Sources folder of your x64 RTM to the folder c:\Windows7AIO\Distribution\x64 (only install.wim)
6. Now, with admin rights, open the Deployment Tools Command Prompt (click in Start/All programs/Microsoft Windows AIK)
7. We change directory to our working folder:

8. OK, here's the tricky part. We are now about to export the images of each windows version to a single .WIM image file. The command to do this is IMAGEX.EXE. The syntax is as follows:

imagex /export c:\Windows7AIO\Distribution\x64\install.wim 1 .\install.wim "Windows7 Home Basic x64"


This is what the first line of code does: export Version 1 of the source image file named Install.wim located in the folder c:\Windows7AIO\Distribution\x86 to the destination image file named Install.wim located in c:\Windows7AIO\Distribution. The number 1 corresponds to the Home Basic edition of Windows, take a look at the following table, for the SourceNumber and its corresponding Windows Edition:

*there is no starter edition in x64!




Thus, for example if we wanted to add the 64bit Ultimate version of Windows7 to our newly created image we type the following command:

9. Now that we've created our .WIM image file, let's create our ISO image file to make it ready to burn it to a DVD. To do this, still in the Deployment Tools Command Prompt window, we type:

This will create an ISO file named Win7_AIO.iso in c:\
Delete x86 and x64 folder!!Delete al .clg files from your distribution folder!! Delete Ei.cfg!!
Burn it with Nero on DVD and thats it!

Whoever you quoted that steps from, it's incorrect.

1. You don't need to delete the *.clg files, only ei.cfg

2. You will need to delete the x86 and x64 folders first before creating the iso with oscdimg.

It's a waste of download. If you have a Vista DVD you'll have the same repair options.

Not only that, but Office 2007 SP1 can't be slipstreamed.

They're going backwards... or just dumb, one of those.

With Office you just put the sp1 files in the update folder and that's it.

Not for me. Wasted like 3 DVD's trying to get it to work too.

This is why you should get yourself some rewritable disc so if you make a mistake you can always erase and

reuse it.

I have tried the Reverse Integration with build 1800 the "so called" RTM .. and it works flawless, have done it with Ultimate x86 and x64 and done it with Home Premium x86 and x64 .. no i am about to "glue" them together to one DVD

I've did the reverse integration method too and it works great, but does anyone mind guiding me on the right track as to how to I combine all the editons of Vista into one Install.wim file.

I'm not talking about combing both the x86 and x64 version into 1 DVD, I'm talking about

combing all the editions (Starter, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate) into 1 disc. This is so that

if I go out and do my job, I won't have to carry individual disc for every version of Vista.

BTW: I've checked out the WAIK guide and I saw a command for ImageX that might be what I'm looking for, but I do not know if that's the right section.

The WAIK guide for that ImageX command is how to

"append a volume image to an existing image".

Ultimate lets you run Virtual Machines while Home premium does not.

Go with the retail version of Ultimate if you can't decide which platform to choose.

It's expensive, but if you think about it.

2 OEM 32 and 64 is $400

1 retail with both 32 and 64bit DVD is still $400

And as for this 4GB limitation on a 32bit system.

Some system cannnot detect up to 4Gb is because of chipset limitations.

e.g. Intel 945 supports up to 4GB, but if you install 4 1GB rams then the

bios will allocated the ram thus leaving you with only 3.2GB no matter which OS

you use 32bit or 64bit.

I replaced the bmp file with my custom one with a size of 1x1px because I thought by

doing that all I'm removing is that stupid window which is blocking my nice background.

Instead of just removing that window it has also remove buttons in

order for me to to install Vista! e.g. Where the f*** is the I agree check box?! LOL

Then I realize instead of changing that background in the back, why not

just change the one in the front. So that's what I did.

The back image is 517, the front one is 516.

As for resizing the Windows size, I'll take a look at that.

i have modify the file "spwizimg.dll" for a new background image.

the bitmap ist in 517.

you must mount the boot.wim and the file is in the source directory.

I've tried to use the WAIK tools. I selected the boot.wim and

WAIK told me to chose either LongHorn or WinPE. I've tried both and

when it was creating a catalog and during half way a error message pops up

saying I don't have "read/write priviledges". It's even the same when

I've tried it in the "secret Administrator" account.

Is there something that I've got to do before I can see the contents inside

the boot.wim file like with ImageX?

I've got Windows Vista Ultimate the 64bit Edition.

it will be my custom background instead of Vista's default.

I'm not planning to do unattended or other complicated

Will XP support DX10. MS have said DX10 will only be available for Vista. I have heard that there may be a DX9c which may provide dx10 game support. What's the word on this? For me the only reason to migrate to Vista is DX10 support.

No XP will not support DX10. It's only available in Vista.

Besides if you migrate to Vista and still have a DX 9 gpu then

you are not using DX 10. In order to take advantage you

must have a DX 10 video card. Although I've not seen

yet as to how well a DX 10 cards runs on Vista, but

if you really want to find out, you'll have to wait until

DX 10 games comes available.

Back to topic: I've got a 945p chipset and set my hard drive to RAID 0

when installing Vista, it did not asked me for RAID drivers, it finds it automatically.

No drivers are needed.

I've heard this from somewhere, there is a free way of doing it.

First findout the combined resolution of both monitors.

Then resize both wallpapers to the desired size.

Now use a photo imaging program, bind them together and save it.

After that select the wallpaper you have just worked on and apply.

Great Idea.  Looks like most of the problems people are having are User Error.  So, I think I can simplify things.  I have changed one of Websee's files (hope you don't mind) in order to simplify things.  Currently he runs the slide show from the CD or DVD.  It is better to copy the files onto the hard drive and just run it from the install directory.

First, open your winnt.sif file and add

[GuiUnattended]
DetachedProgram="%systemdrive%\install\slide\slideshow.cmd"

Create a folder called Slide in your Install folder.  Now download the attached file, unZIP it and copy all the files into

$OEM$\$\Install\Slide\

After that is done.  Select all your slideshow images and copy them into the same folder. 

$OEM$\$\Install\Slide\

Name them image01.jpg, image02.jpg, image03.jpg  etc.  Be sure to edit filelist.js to reflect all your images.

Burn the CD.  Post your results.

and see if it works, but your and my are almost exactly the same, except

for the keyboard, timezone, and custom theme layout.

Weird, that yours work any my does not.

While searching on the web for some additional help

by typing "detachedprogram" in Google web search.

A link to the "MSFN" forum section discussing the command

"DetachedProgram": most people have difficulities with "detachedprogram"

Also it does not support "cmd" commands. Only about 2 or 3 people have manage

to make it work while most of the others can not.

Is there something special with your CD?

I am using a xp with sp2 cd.

And nope the detachedprogram just does not run even with the

command prompt command option.

Is there any other way to make this work?

edit: When I check out my drive, I do see the directory install with

the command "slideshow.cmd" copy successfully during the text-mode

part of the xp setup.

In the ref.chm file, does the detachedprogram command line, does it need any

arguments such as /n/s because in the ref.chm they did not say a god ****. thing about what does those aruguments do or what they meant!

Sorry, the file is name filelist.js not filelist.js_.

The thing is that I've been testing out that CD in my 2nd partition because I do

not want to format my C:\. Does this have any problems as to preventing my

Thank you for your info, but I am still having difficulities.

This is what I did, please tell me if I have made any mistakes.

- I copy all the slideshow files including the images I want for the slideshow

into the path: $OEM$\$1\install.

-Inside the filelist.js_ I input the image's name such as you have it in your example

Image1, Image2, Image3, etc...(my images names are Image1, Image2, Image3, etc...) In the end I imput the code...

-Then I edit slideshow.cmd and the code for that is:

-Inside the Winnt.sif file, I imput the code under [guiunattend]:

739x637 because I want all the images to be the same size when the slide show starts.

In the future most people will be using HD-DVD and Bluray which can support more

capicaties.

Another thing is one company came up with this see through media that is the size of

a postage stamp, it's transparent, and it can store more than a blank DVD media.

While another had came up a blank DVD that can go up to 1TB!

But i've tried to burn the same data at 3.4Gb testing on

both the DVD-R and DVD+R. I like the DVD+R more than

the DVD-R.

Choosing a DVD-writer is a difficult task, by asking other you will get some options but, these options might not satisfied you.

For example: Some people like the brand names Nec, Samsung, and Plextor. And they say it is the best, while some might say these brand names products sucks!

When choosing a writer, first pick out a few companies you know and trust

such as Sony, Ricoh, Samsung, Yamaha, Nec, Plextor, etc...

-Another thing is think to yourself have you ever bought one of their computer products before?

-Did that product last longer than it's warranty period?

-The most important thing is support. What is the point of gettng a top of the line

product, if their support is full of crap.

When you choose a DVD-writer, do some research and read some reviews.

After doing the reseach and your ready to buy that DVD-writer, just go out and buy it.

Do not reconsider about price or another brand because if you do then you will

never be satisfied.

Lite-On CD-writer are good but as for DVD-writers, not really.

I've got a Sony Dru700A and it's the best.

In maximum pc magazine, it got a score of 9 out of 10 and a Kick a** award!

Of course all of us would want the best VGA card that is out there, but also the most cheapest. This is of course not true, so before buying a card just do some research and read the reviews. Also when you buy it look for the company that you trust the most, do not just look for the cheapest price, and do not regret on the product that you buy because if you do then you will never be satisfied.

As for the cards Nvidia cards are compatible for most games.

As fo ATI cards there are compatible for some games.

E.g. In the requirement for Need for Speed II hot pursuit (or is it something else).

The requirement is all Nvidia GPU are supported, but for ATI only certain models are supported.

Also having a 256mb video card does not mean you are able to play your games really fast.

Once I tryied a 128mb vga card and it out perform the 256mb video card when I play DOOM3.
