  1. Hi, I have a Windows 2000 Server machine used as a File server with a large number of local groups existing on it (my predecessor found that putting domain groups into local server groups was the best way to manage data access...) and a Windows 2003 Standard Server that is to be a replacement of the file server component from the 2000 machine. What I need to know is what people would recommend for migrating the files across (about 10gig or so), but how to also transfer the local groups from the old machine (about 40) which have the NTFS access to the files I need to transfer. I had a look at the 'file and settings transfer wizard for XP', but I really only want to move a selection of folders and files and the local groups which have access to it, not so much the rest of the system settings. Can anyone recommend something on the above, or point me in the direction of some doco that might help?? thanks
  2. I have always known the default local administrator account to have a sid of 500. Under Win 2003 I can not seem to tell if this is true. As in, in my 2003 builds I have always created a new user (as a member of the administrator group) and then set a difficult password for the administrator account and disabled it. Is there any point in this? Or has the 500 SID identification gone? By checking under the HKEY_USERS hive, I can not see any accounts that end with 500, only one that ends with 9057. (I also disable anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts). thanks heaps!
  3. Hi, I have a Windows 2003 RIS server and am trying to install to an IBM Netfinity 4500R, 733Mhz CPU with 1.5GB RAM and all of the latest firmware. When I hit F12 to PXE boot to the RIS server it immediately comes back with the 'Windows NT has found only 511k low memory. Windows NT needs 512k to ....' I read up on some other info about how to get around the problem ( (http://www.thecomputermechanics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21536 and http://www.antionline.com/history/topic.php/265595-1.html) but they are mainly aimed at local installs, not via RIS. Can anyone provide me with some direction as to what I need to modify on my RIS server? Any advice would be much appreciated
  4. Found the answer, just in case anyone else has the same problem: Modify the registry for each file type that you want to search within (e.g. .doc as in the below example) to include a PersistentHandler value. reg add HKCR\.doc\PersistentHandler /d {5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb} /t REG_SZ /f Will require a restart for the change to become effective.
  5. Thanks, but is there anyway to enable searching within documents (.doc) without the installation of any tools? I was hoping more along the lines of that you had to 'register' the file format with windows search or something, or a registry hack to enable it... I might be clutching at straws here and may have to install another application...
  6. Hi, I have recently built a 2k3 w/sp1 machine and have been trying to use windows file search feature to find a file containing a certain word. After much cursing from not finding it, I realised that by default, Windows search does not look within .doc files. I dont know if this is because they are binary files or something, but I need to know if I can make Windows search within these files when doing such tasks. I dont want to have to install any software such as M$Word/Word Viewer unless I have to. Any ideas? thanks in advance --aaron
  7. Any way to avoid that? I was hoping to go through and fix up all user accounts once and for all... What I was hoping for was a way to apply a set of settings to all users (not just new users as allowed in the regional settings menu). If there is no such way, I guess I will have to have a startup script or go through and manually change all registry keys for users. thanks
  8. Hi, I have setup an unattended RIS based install for our servers (built about 5 so far) and neglected to change the regional settings, language group, contry code etc. A user pointed this out to me, so I went and changed the .sif file for future builds, but I am still stuck with the wrong settings for all existing users. I went and changed the HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\International keys so that all new users created have the right settings, but as for users that already exist, is there a simpler way to do a global change, rather than manually going through all HKEY_USERS\<USER ID>\Control Panel\International keys on all machines? thanks
  9. I have been searching for this problem since I initially posted (only a few days after SP1 came out) but still havent found an answer, has anyone got any ideas or something they can point me to? Sorry for the repeat post, but I am still struggling to work around this... thanks
  10. Why I am impressed by the Post-Setup Security Updates (PSSU) an am well aware of its benefits, it leaves my remote RIS installation in a bit of trouble as I can no longer terminal service to it to manage it straight after install. I only ask as I am performing RIS installs across a high speed WAN and although I do need someone to start the RIS install, I would like to be able to not rely on that person again to configure auto updates upon installation (they would need admin login etc.). Does anyone know where in the registry the PSSU information resides and if they have had any luck modifying it as part of their RIS installs? thanks in advance.
  11. Thanks Dahi, I am currently digesting the information across those posts/guides... All a bit overwhelming at the moment... All I am working out is that there does not seem to be a simple answer to this... bugger... I didnt really want to play around with my installation that much if i didnt need to, but it looks like its gonna be a fair bit of work... If anyone has any other suggestions, please feel free, thanks.
  12. Hi, I am trying to configure my RIS installation to install drivers based on the contents of an IBM ServerGuide CD. The problem is that the IBM drivers are stored in a deep directory heirachy (e.g. \$1\Drivers\IBM\hrsata\driver\win32). Rather than having to add each individual directory path to ensure all drivers are searched, is it possible to configure the OemPnPDriversPath to search within subdirectories (so I would only need to add Drivers\IBM) If not, does anyone have any other ideas of how this could be achieved (I even thought of writing a Perl script which searched all subfolders and placed them all in the one directory and then reference that one...) Any ideas?
  13. Also, if anyone else has any suggestions or views on what I am trying to do, i would be more than happy if you posted them. I know someone has done what I am trying to do, it just seems like a simple thing... thanks again
  14. thanks ]Bonkers[ I might be able to use your idea in my context (more thinking required), however the purpose of my RIS server is to perform one time completely unattended builds of servers. Looks like it might be easier for me to create three instances of my RIS image rather than trying to link three different cmdlines.txt type files to the one image... thanks anyway mate!
  15. Hi all, A problem I have been struggling to resolve and would appreciate any input... Using Windows 2003 I have created a single RIS image of 2003 Server. I have created three ristndrd.sif type files for three seperate builds based associated to the one image. My problem lies in the fact that I want to have a custom cmdlines.txt file run for each build (e.g. for different registry hacks/tweaks, hotifx installations etc). Is there anyway that I can do this and somehow uniquely attribute a cmdlines.txt type file to each .sif file? If so, how is this possible? Any advice would be much appreciated thanks --aaron
