I had a somewhat similar issue and it turned out to be a focus problem — Excel didn’t recognize the drag because I hadn’t clicked into it first. Also, if you're working a lot in Excel, you might find the 141 Free Excel Templates and Spreadsheets useful. I grabbed a few budget and calendar ones, and they made organizing easier without messing around too much.
