  1. yea, I have and I have native usb support. Maximus decim has a great 98se update that give it the support like in ME...it's out on this forum in the 98SE section....but it only works for storage/flash type drives....I still need to use a scanner drive for my scanner.
  2. I agree somewhat.....I really like 98se and with the tweaks I've done all seems pretty smooth. I maybe have 1 lockup a week or so and I test A LOT of SW on it! FYI for XP, I have been able to totally turn off the file thing that when you delete a file, it returns...there's info out there how to do it but I had to then boot to 98SE and replace the file in a few locations....so on that notebook I have, never recopies a delted file!! Yeah!!! I also formatted the hd with fat32, not ntfs.....(maybe that's whay it's slower in xp, but I can't understand why such a difference, still).
  3. No, I made this computer from pieces...it had no OS, so I had 98SE at the time and I can tweak it pretty good. And I have about 5G of programs/data on the PC already, so it's not an issue of the OS being larger (I also have turned off restore on xp, etc)... I can't imagine really why it runs so slow vs 98SE, one would think it would run close at least....the difference to me is staggering. Oh, it has an 80G HD and 384M ram...agp 4x ATI card with 32M vid and I think the Athlon is more equivilent to a P3, not a P2. I have a notebook, P3, 866 and it takes about 3 min to run Spybot...
  4. On an AMD Athlon 800 (OC to 950) PC I have, I run W98SE. I have it pretty fine tuned and felt the PC was pretty quick. For example, I run spybot S/D and after running it 2x (how I do my test) to clear all detected spyware, etc...I time it 3x. In 98SE, it takes 1m 37s with the latest 1.4 version and latest detects..... So I load XP Home on that system (albeit not fully tweaked out and still needs activation) and it takes 3m 0s !!! I would think XP should be faster.....but my tests proved otherwise in this case anyway.... That's a BIG difference to try and comprehend...
  5. yes, I found how to remove the wholesend to in the contect menu, but again, not quite what I want.. I am picky, eh? I just want the 2 drive entries (floppy and CDRW) removed, ONLY from the send to menu. Otherwise I have a number of send to's I like to use!
  6. I checked the windowsxp.mvps link...good info but that one kills the drivesfrom view altogether....I want to just remove them from the send to menu.... oh well, looks like it can not be done!
  7. thanks but I already said (in a roundabout way) that I checked that, tried that - those 2 are NOT displaying anywhere. I have show all...on every pc I use.....as a general rule I want to see all. These 2 I can't find!
  8. I've searched the net and this forum of course....can't find anything clear to get this one resolved. First, I have all hidden files shown (the folder options, etc). These 2 send to entries are no where to be found. I've searched the registry for the words Floppy and CDRW and couldn't find them for anything to do with the send to menu, best I could tell.... I was surprised not to easily find an answer to this one... I want to remove the 2 entries in the send to submenu: Send to 3 1/2" Floppy Send to CD-RW Drive Anyone got the answer?
  9. If you want the best tabbed browser, get the ansi version of MAXTHON...I've been on that team for a few years now and it's really the best browser out there (plugins galore, custom mouse gestures, groups, drag n drop, key shortcuts, forum response as quick as here [i am seidenj there], rss newsfeeds, etc, blah blah!!). http://www.maxthon.com/
  10. I don't wanna sound dumb but I have to! What is this updated update.sys going to do for me and my pc? Is there a reason I want it? Thx!!
  11. what's the best way to edit msdos.sys? I know it's not a standard text type file....any trick or editor better to use? edit: never mind...I will search for it on the web...tried to be lazy!!
  12. My flash drive works with the older versions, but not with the post-RC2 builds. Would you be able to create either an optional install of these drivers or maybe even a separate installer for people like me?? Thanks a MILLION, if possible! TiMeBoMb <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Have you tried maximus-decim's native usb 2.2 drivers? excellent.... it's posted here at the forums....http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=43605 or am I barking up the wrong tree!!
  13. I am pretty sure it should not be a problem. First, check different wireless routers (assuming a router would be connected to a cable/dsl modem...). The router itself would not need sw on a pc, but the wireless card would....so, then check for the different wireless cards to go along with your preferred router. Check the manufacturer website and verify there are W98SE drivers for the card. I think in almost 100% of the time, there should be drivers for the wireless card. If so, then you could use it with 98SE...I would think...
  14. thx Gape...got it...it was hard for me to know, as it is noted in maximus-decim's post ....and similar devices. I figured a USB scanner is a similar device!! but I understand it is a storage device....so it is Ok to run usb2.2 along with my scanner driver... thx!
  15. sorry...I meant on it's own, w/out revolutions...on one pc I can only achieve 24bit color, so can't use the 32bit features of Revolutions...
  16. Hi Tihiy, Looking good!! Is there a way to hook in shutdown.exe to thestart menu button, so when I click the start button/shutsown, I get your proggie?
  17. without risking sounding too dumb... what is 98fe (hay, gotta learn somewhere)?
  18. have you done anything inbetween the last session and shutdown? Guess I would: 1. Start in DOS mode 2. perform a scandisk /autofix to let your pc check the hard drive in DOS.....see if it's clean. If you want to be prompted on any error, then don't do the /autofix.... 3. I would then do scanreg and let the registry get cleaned up in DOS mode. Then reboot and if no luck: go back to DOS mode, try scanreg /restore and restore the session from the day you had the problem....(e.g if a problem happened today, you could restore this AM or yesterday's registry) Then see.... Otherwise, you may need to reinstall W98...which is easy enough...
  19. Hi Maximus, I tried 2.1 and it worked for my Fuji camera, except I would get an additional prompt asking me to use the taskbar icon to STOP the camera first... In connecting/disconnecting the camera, there is no harm, so is there a way to get rid of the prompt? Also (and more important), I have an older Visioneer 7600 USB scanner that 2.1 didn't work with...will 2.2 work with it?
  20. in 98, there is a view button, lower right if the cleanup dialog (except if selecting temp files)...it takes one to Windows Explorer if clicked.... Again, as jothro is a self proclaimed newbie and very naive, I'd suggest he/she not mess with anything...until he/she learns the OS a bit by researching, reading, getting on forums, etc...
  21. hey Edick - see jotho's other post? he was talking about the disk cleanup util, as I was....
  22. listen...I already told you in detail in another post you did on same subject the files are not needed. The temp internet files regenerate themselves automatically so don't worry they come back!! get over and past it... If you are that much of a novice, don't be playing with folders, etc..you can delete them is DOS, but don't worry about it - it's permanent and if you mess up.... Learn and enjoy your PC first. there are lots of good newsgroups for newbies....search the web for learning the OS you have.
  23. what happens if I don't remove all drivers (if I forget one, etc)??
  24. That's not true. You can delete system.ini, win.ini and you wont restart your windows properly if at all without them. And there are many other files like this. Always know what you are doing unless you experiment of course. Are you a troll ? Do you want to f*** his system just for fun ? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> hey, watch your attitude and mouth!!! All I do is [try to] help people...and I don't mouth off to others that are doing the same. Did you read my responses to other issues here at this forum? I know you must have read a few, since you added value responses after mine.... The cleanup utility that Windows provides to all users.... it's called Disk Cleanup and on everyone's start menu... I like how you misquoted me, too...left off the fact that I noted to use the disk cleanup utility.... geez.....
  25. Jotho - I received your PM but best to post here as others may have ideas/opinions... Don't worry about Temporary Internet Files.....go ahead and delete them. Also, I would not be concerned about older IE folders/files... Just do a disk cleanup (the easiest way for you maybe at the moment) and delete all - with what Windows allows you to delete, you can't get in too much trouble! Jeff
