  1. Moi feeling a bit peckish ... I love JimKwik's egg analogy: "Your life is like an egg. If it's broken by an outside force, life ends. BUT if it's broken by an inside force ... life begins. Great things begin on the inside." I like eggs.
  2. [ Ooops ... I got caught stalking everybody on Sunday ] Hello stranger Xperceniol! I thought you had abandoned us for good. I then saw you and msfntor at the other forum. I was wondering what you were up to. I came back here because the other day someone else was having a similar issue I had on a Dell Latitude (which has been driving me insane). I can install any OS except the two I want (XP and Windows10). Just now, I have installed Windows 8.10 on it instead. Life is tough. Oh well we can't always have what we want. Merry Christmas!
  3. Sounds wonderful ! Delicious food ... fresh air ... this is the life.
  4. Yes! That's the spirit. Even though there were elements of truth in what you said, not a good idea to be too cynical in life. The World has been a huge disappointment indeed because we could have done so much better. The planet is so unique and special. It's such a shame that it has been ruined by a minority of evil souls. Most people on Earth are actually good and kind, we don't push the boundaries to abuse others. The reason things have gone from bad to worse is because while we are minding our own, the rotten ones have amassed so much power over our well being. Good people usually learn to tolerate, but the trouble is that the more we tolerate, the worse it gets. We are no better if we did the same to retaliate (not to mention it only gets uglier), so it's a tough World we live in. We can't change others, but we can certainly change ourselves. For a start, we need to take better care of our physical and mental health. You only have one life, make it an enjoyable one, don't waste it. The least we should do is do no harm to ourselves (and others). Learn to appreciate how special you are. Starting from now. Then discover what else can be done.
  5. It's hard to believe that a while ago a young man did sell his kidney for an iPhone I hear that. Humanity is a mystery.
  6. At the end of this page, it has useful instructions on XP, worth a read if interested: http://woshub.com/updating-trusted-root-certificates-in-windows-10/
  7. Forgive me, I must repent, and I shall repent some more tomorrow and the day after tomorrow ... till the end of time. From now on I shall eat scallops instead. You are not related to them as well by any chance ?
  8. REAL SURVEY on Marriage and Romance HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY? You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming. - Alan, age 10 No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with. - Kirsten, age 10 WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED? Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then. - Camille, age 10 HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED? You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. - Derrick, age 8 WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON? Both don't want any more kids. - Lori, age 8 WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE? Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough. - Lynnette, age 8 On the first date, they just tell each other lies, and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date. - Martin, age 10 WHAT WOULD YOU DO ON A FIRST DATE THAT WAS TURNING SOUR? I'd run home and play dead. The next day I would call all the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns. - Craig, age 9 WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE? When they're rich. - Pam, age 7 The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that. - Curt, age 6 The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It's the right thing to do. - Howard, age 8 IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED? It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. - Anita, age 9 HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN'T GET MARRIED? There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there? - Kelvin, age 9 HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK? Tell your wife that she looks pretty even if she looks like a truck.
  9. I love fish too ... salmon and tuna hmmm ... yum yum
  10. In case someone has the same problem: the workaround is to press F7 during F6 install. The problem isn't due to the driver. It was an ACPI issue (hence hanging forever)

  13. Now that you mentioned it ... I've given it some serious thoughts ... likely BOTH ? Yeah ... must be. Wait wait ... I can be funny too ... I have collected some jokes one from the US and one from the UK ... BTW, plants are high maintenance, I'm into self-sufficiency, and they kept dying on me if I forgot to water them. In the end I gave them all away. Now I only have plastic plants to talk to, and they never talk back ! We never argue and now we live happily ever after. Beat that!
  14. You guys are so funny. I haven't had a good laugh since forever. I'm so glad I joined this board by accident. I was laughing during my walk when I remembered Tripredacus' profile ... and I had to pretend to be talking to the trees and the shrubs so that nobody would think I was crazy laughing and talking to myself.
  15. Hi, do you still have your Dell E6530 with XP on ? My E6530 i7 has 16GB RAM and 500GB SSD, BIOS A22 latest (legacy boot; AHCI) I have been having much trouble installing XP Pro SP3 (that XP version installed well on E5500 with a slip streamed SATA driver). The E6530 works well with Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu 14.0. Both Windows 10 and XP would fail at install (Windows 10 wouldn't even go further than the logo be it legacy or UFEI while XP would hang at the blue screen Starting Windows (not the infamous BSOD). It just hangs forever. I presume it's due to a missing driver, but no luck with finding one to slip stream. How did you manage to install XP on it ? Any advice would be much appreciated.
  16. You sound perfectly fine to me, not awkward at all. I have a friend who drives everyone around crazy being belligerent all day long (he can't help himself). Having said that, he has been a good friend when you are in trouble. I guess we all have our own idiosyncrasies. Oooops ... I've already given away all my indoor plants (artificial plants are easier to look after). Oh well ... never mind, I can always talk to myself ... if the outdoor plants wouldn't talk to me. Just take one step at a time. When you are ready, take your plants out for a walk. Not the other way around, otherwise you would be waiting forever. Remember to check out Charlie Munger's wisdom, he might have something for you. I found this just now ... nice. “Hold fast to dreams, For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird, That cannot fly.” ― Langston Hughes
  17. To know that you are not alone might help? Even living in a better part of the World, all good people have to struggle much the same in life. We do not push the boundary and cross the line, so we expect others to do the same. Unfortunately, it's just wishful thinking because there are plenty of people out there who just do not play by the rules, nor do they care how much misery they inflict on others. Of course we get disappointed when we are let down. We make bad choices in life, once bitten twice shy. "Do nothing" feels safe but it's depressing. Humans are meant to be gregarious, however much we would like to defy Nature. The longer one stays solitary, being able to find a soulmate feels more like a distant dream. A good strategy now is to create pockets of happiness (an interesting challenge; an intelligent conversation ...). I'm still reading up on Charlie Munger's mental tricks. This guy has so much wisdom to share with the World. He says there are also plenty of good like-minded people out there (stay with the good ones and avoid the bad). One most useful advice is "not to make a tragedy worse". I'm still learning.
  18. I think "having low expectation" in a relationship does stand a better chance for success. Albert Einstein allegedly said, “Women marry men hoping they will change, and men marry women hoping they will not. So each is inevitably disappointed.” Having said that, I'm not sure it's a good strategy in other areas of life. Without hopes and dreams, life would be too bland. Perhaps reframing the outcome would be a better approach. Being happy is just a state of mind, having a good imagination is the key.
  19. I'm probably a little late to discover this forum. I find some of the messages on this board very interesting. You all sound like really nice people. I have read your reply to Dixel's message (in reply to XPerceniol's) and couldn't help wondering if this sadness is some kind of gender miscommunication. I actually have heard my female friends made the same complaint about men. How ironic, never thought that men feel that way too. Recently I have discovered a highly intelligent philosopher called Charlie Munger. He has so much life wisdom to share with younger people. One advice he gives is to "lower your expectation in order to be happy" as the first rule to happiness. Maybe we all expect too much in that department? I wished I had known about his existence long ago. I'm still learning. If interested, you can search for him on Youtube.
  20. Yes 45 minutes is definitely a nice distance to walk to work. I used to work in London and was so fed up with the tube strikes. I decided to walk to work and it was great. Walking is so enjoyable. I now go grocery walk in auto pilot mode (the music helps), I seem to arrive in no time. The return trip is more effort carrying the back pack. Still, not too bad. It's an excuse to exercise too. Highly recommended. The real test is in the summer.
  21. To Tripredacus: I wrongly presumed every town had at least one supermarket, so I didn't expect anyone would need to walk four hours to get food. It takes me less than two hours for the entire grocery trip. It takes me 50mins to go to the town centre. Basically, it gets easier (I started last October, the rain and the snow were no problems with the right clothing). I love it! Walking (while listening to your favourite music) is very therapeutic ! My next test is the summer: will the frozen food survive the trips ? To NotHereToPlayGames: Walking is better (not just because I don't know how to ride a bike), no maintenance and it's safer. As for flat battery, I used to have that problem too UNTIL I got a gadget from Ebay just a USB recharger (size of a laptop SATA drive) with croc clips to jump start. I thought it was too good to be true, but it was that easy to use. I'm rubbish with DIY etc, if I could do it anyone can. It was a best investment ever! To UCyborg: I know what you meant. However, I just felt so sad to see so much destruction that could have been avoided. The other leaders could have helped by reasonable mediation instead of taunting and provoking day in day out (what do they expect with more provocation, ammunition and sanctioning?) Now the innocent people have to bear the consequences, as if we had not enough problems with the pandemic of madness already. I don't know how politicians could possibly claim ownership of other countries. Patriotism is a man made concept like religion, we are the same species sharing the same planet. It's so foolish to self-destruct. The World could have been a lovely place. Now we can't even appreciate one and other in peace. PS Apart from the no hairdryer, no heating and walk whenever possible, there must be plenty other ideas people can share? Yesterday I discovered another one: soak the dried pasta in a pan of cold water until soft, it takes less time to cook. Give it a try.
  22. re forum shutting down: really? really?? when? ... but ... I've only just joined this forum today. Hello everyone ! re petrol price increase: I have a solution, walk. I've just sold my car and invested in a good rucksack and a pair of good walking shoes. I have found a scenic route to the supermarket. A long walk but it's very enjoyable listening to music. A best decision ever. Now I don't have to worry about petrol or car maintenance either. Highly recommended. re utility bills: that's a different story. I'm not sure if we could survive without electricity. I have stopped using a hair dryer, that's no problem. I have not turned on the heating, you get used to the cold (just layers of clothing). Someone mentioned some survival skills in harsh conditions? Please enlighten me. re war: I just don't get it (is it worth it?), wouldn't it be nicer to have peace for everyone ... can't they just find a compromise? re today: no rain but nothing went right today. I come here for some good advice and some therapy. The Windows 10 installation failed miserably and the new mini circular saw won't play nice ... hope for a better day tomorrow.
